hasn't been bad! just busy busy. my thesis is due soon so i'm always working.

my thesis is about adjective ordering preferences, especially looking at bilingual speakers

so like, why we like 'big blue bird' instead of 'blue big bird'

more like why we say 'big blue' instead of 'blue big'. because they're both adjectives, so it shouldn't matter, but we all say 'big blue'.

its not a strict rule, but for some reason we all do that the same way

I remember reading a amusing book by I think her name was Jennifer Little... it was kind of like that only looking at different languages

That's interesting.

We have subject, verb, object in that order usually

But other languages use other orders of SVO

i took a whole class on stuff like that admiral!

Like I think German usually puts the verb last usually

Those are the kind of nuances that would be hard for a non native speaker

yeah thats whats interesting to me

no, cognitive science, but they're within the same department here

and cognitive science includes linguistics

I've always wondered if one's native language affects the way one thinks

Ah ok... I knew someone at Cal that was a linguistics minor but his major was computer science.... which naturally was what he wound up doing

The Jennifer Little book was kind of about that too --- trying to be funny about it

Cognitive science seems like it would be fascinating

But ofc there's been lots of serious speculation on that... like Orwell tried to point out in 1984

There's certain things you can't quite say in one language that you might put easily in another, for example

Are certain languages biased towards certain kinds of expression?

well one example is some languages don't have words for as many colors as we have - say, purple - and this can change their perception of that color

I can also remember Alan Watts used to talk about how it was difficult to point out some concepts in Buddhism... but that ironically it might be easier to talk about it in English because it is very flexible...idk if that was just his take

When I used to listen to his old talks on KPFK

and i'm trying to remember an example with cardinal directions. some cultures who teach them more have different associations attached to them, like associate time and cardinal directions, or past/present/future

They don't have dedicated words for large numbers

pinker is great i've read him a bit. don't always agree with him but hes cool.

Yes I agree I didn't always agree with him but it is thought provoking

I'm sure getting definitive answers to some of these ideas is hard since it's a very complicated subject

I think he's one of the lecturers you can see as part of the Skeptics Society series at Cal Tech

yeah its a pretty new discipline which makes answers hard, but its also really cool to be involved in it

Or used to be.... I used to subscribe to Skeptic Magazine

I probably will again sometime but it varies in how interesting it is... seemingly they spend a lot of effort debunking the same things over and over... which is probably why it's only quarterly

Well they found computer programming language was biased because the people writing it unknowingly put their own biases into it

I read "The Moral Arc" by the Skeptics Society founder and liked that too

So much faster than heating up a big oven

When my Dad was still around he would often just tell me what had to be done to make dinner step by step as he watched tv

And I would just do it like a robot so I never really learned anything about it

cooking is much easier that way. i find it hard to keep track of all the steps on my own.

I could have learned if I paid attention but I don't like cooking so I never used my head I just went through the motions

I worked at a restaurant and learned how to cook there

Did you wind up liking it?

I was a latchkey kid so I had to make my own food

It was really hard work but I still like cooking

I was too but I never did anything much more than microwaving a hot dog

I can remember not getting lunch at high school because I didn't do the common lunch area thing with everyone

I always liked cooking shows so I wanted to cook things

So I pretty much always had a big snack at about 2 after walking home

i always liked cooking shows too but thats wayyyy over my skill level

i like baking shows a lot, the great british baking show is really fun

I hated the lunch room but it was the Midwest so you had to stay inside and eat

and baking seems more approachable than big cooking to me for some reason

I liked the dining commons in college

I don't know why I avoided the hs lunches... just bloody mindedness I guess

I guess because I had been fascinated by war history from a young age

i loved dressing up! and i still do now. gives me an excuse once a year to break out my sewing skills

i crocheted myself a jester hat this last halloween

I know I have a picture of me at about 6 when my Mom made a Boy Robin costume for me

But I have no clear memory of it

I think you can get it authenticated by MLB

I don't know if they do that at the game... but if everyone saw you get it on TV then you can probably take it to them with that evidence and get a holographic authentication sticker

They were showing who caught it on the replay so that should be enough

The one time I went to Fan Fest I stood in line for Fergie Jenkins' autograph and they had a guy sitting with him specifically to put a sticker like that on it for people
