Born on this day in 1962: Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, English rock bassist, best known for being a member of the Stone Roses (playing on both of the band's albums) and Primal Scream. Mounfield has a guest role in the movie 24 Hour Party People (2002).

Born on this day in 1921 :Grammy-winning record producer Ethel Gabriel. A trailblazer for women in the music industry, she was one of the first women to work as a record producer. She also had a music background — she played trombone and had her own dance band in the 1930s and early ’40s — and her skill set earned her more and more responsibility, as well as the occasional role in shaping music history. She said she was on hand at the 1955 meeting in which the RCA executive Stephen Sholes signed Elvis Presley, who had been with Sun Records. She had a hand in “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White,” the 1955 instrumental hit by Pérez Prado that helped ignite a mambo craze in the United States. Gabriel died in New York on 23 March 2021 aged 99.

Mainly known for singing melancholic sentimental ballads, Hardy has been an important figure in French pop music since her debut, spanning a career of more than fifty years with over thirty studio albums released. She rose to prominence in the early 1960s as a leading figure of the yé-yé wave, a genre of pop music and associated youth culture phenomenon that adapted to French the pop and rock styles that came from the United States and the United Kingdom. The singer differentiated herself from her peers by writing her own material, a rare feat in an industry dominated by older, male composers and producers.
