Born on this day in 1966: American singer, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Buckley, his only studio album was the 1995 Grace. Buckley drowned on 29th May 1997 in Wolf River Harbor on the Mississippi River - during a spontaneous evening swim. Since his death, there have been many posthumous releases of his material including his cover of the Leonard Cohen's song 'Hallelujah' which became No.1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs in March 2008 and reached No.2 in the UK Singles Chart. His singer songwriter father Tim Buckley, died on 29th June 1975 of a heroin and morphine overdose.

He is recognized as one of the most popular songwriters of his era (October 30, 1897 – November 6, 1970). By the time of his death he had written over 700 songs.

Phoebe Bridgers’ annual tradition of releasing a holiday charity single continues with some help from her Boygenius bandmates and the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds. The musicians collaborated on “The Parting Glass,” a traditional ballad popular in Ireland. The cover artwork is a photo of the late Sinéad O’Connor, who famously recorded the song in 2002. Both bands and Interscope Records will donate all net proceeds from the single to the Aisling Project, an after-school effort for kids growing up in a disadvantaged area of Dublin. The charity was chosen by the Sinéad O’Connor Estate.

Gossip have announced Real Power, their first new album in 11 years. The new album was produced by Rick Rubin, who previously worked with Beth Ditto and the band on 2009’s Music for Men. The follow-up to 2012’s A Joyful Noise is out on March 22 via Columbia.
