I recognized "Yulunga" instantly from the first opening chords from a live album I have: one of my favorites...Toward the Within.
Matt Moon (host) 6:13:19 PM
Yeah, unforgettable! I haven't heard many songs that incorporate sounds of the Common loon...especially from Australia. I LOVE this song!
Bama Dan 6:43:58 PM
Interesting. I just looked up handpan...had never heard of it before...and it looks like an inverted steel drum. Very cool.
Matt Moon (host) 6:47:33 PM
Yes, developed in Switzerland to be a fingerip-style version of the steel drum. I love its sound, and there are now full-on virtuosos of this instrument. It's amazing

h matt, hi dan :) Slagr so beautiful !
Russell Scott 6:51:41 PM
Thanks for playing the song with the laptop steel drum shaped like a UFO. I first heard that outside of the Alhambra gate in 2010 and have been mesmerized by it ever since. Russ
Matt Moon (host) 6:53:22 PM
Yes, Russ! The world needs more handpan. Some of the best I've heard is from the Nadishana Trio and Hang Massive, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks utilizing this new instrument. It's pretty transcendental.
Russell Scott 6:59:57 PM
Thanks for the names. I'll look them up.
Matt Moon (host) 7:07:46 PM
Here's a favorite piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orbCZooMvQs
John George 7:18:22 PM
Ooh, Soriah's returning? Shiny!
Bama Dan 7:19:13 PM
The Tuvan overtone style is amazing. I really can't hear enough of it.
John George 7:20:25 PM
When he was here last, he also did a workshop.
Matt Moon (host) 7:25:02 PM
John -- YES! He's also doing a workshop this time. I{t's totally worth it, in my humble opinion. I did a workshop with Huun Huur Tu many years ago and have been singing ever since.
Matt Moon (host) 7:26:13 PM
Soriah will be performing on Tuesday, Feb 6 at 7 pm @ Solar Culture
John George 7:27:29 PM
I caught his last workshop, &, yes, worth it AF (As Foretold). Haven't caught the knack yet, me, but one of these days...
E Christine Hemy 7:28:43 PM
Hey Matt Moon! Where and when is the live throat singing and other events that you were talking about? I’m coming to town next week and would love to experience that. Every time you are on, I just stop and take deep breaths. Thank you, sweet boy🙏🏼
Matt Moon (host) 7:32:30 PM
Soriah will be performing on Tuesday, Feb 6 at 7 pm @ Solar Culture. Check the Solar Culture website for info on the workshop.
Bama Dan 7:34:19 PM
Hi Corbin!
corbin frame (1) 7:36:23 PM
howdy dan!
Bama Dan 7:45:34 PM
I hadn't heard DakhaBrakha until after the Russian invasion of Ukraine...so 2022? And what I heard at that time was more choral/orchestral. But what you played a few minutes ago was very different...more bambastic. I dug it, a lot, but it was unexpected.
Bama Dan 7:45:58 PM
*bombastic
Matt Moon (host) 7:48:11 PM
Dan - they are sooooo dynamic and bombastic. Check out the mini-concert they did on KEXP live (YouTube) and also their performance on Tiny Desk Concert (NPR)
Bama Dan 7:49:42 PM
Thanks Matt.
