Born on this day in 1943: American drummer Clyde Stubblefield best known for his work with James Brown. His rhythm pattern on James Brown's 'Funky Drummer' is among the world's most sampled musical segments and has been used by hip-hop groups and rappers such as Public Enemy, Run-DMC, N.W.A, Raekwon, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Prince. Stubblefield died on February 18, 2017, from kidney failure age 73.

This song is built upon nearly a dozen samples including Sly and the Family Stone, AC/DC, Black Oak Arkansas, Sugarhill Gang, and yes, Stubblefield's "Funky Drummer"beats.

“Mama Said Knock You Out” alone samples James Brown's “Funky Drummer,” the Chicago Gangsters's “Gangster Boogie,” Sly & The Family Stone's “Trip to Your Heart” and “Sing a Simple Song,” and LL Cool J's own “Rock the Bells.”

Another lovely example of the sample is found in this song by the late, great Sinead OÇonnor, a very vocal early supporter and fan of modern hip-hop.
