Stevie Wonder - Big Brother
Stevie Wonder Big Brother Stevie Wonder
Talking Book UNI/MOTOWN 1972 R&B/Soul USMO17282857
In 1972, 50 years ago, Stevie Wonder ‘reinvented the sound of pop by embracing all he could accomplish on his own. Wonder influenced generations of singers with his voice on “Talking Book”; he talks, croons, teases, preaches, moans, barks, growls. It’s not exactly gospel, blues, soul, rock or jazz; it’s all of them at once, and it gives every note he sings an unpredictable life of its own. With the keyboards, synthesizers and effects under his control, there’s wah-wah everywhere, Wonder could extrapolate his vocal inflections to the instruments he played. In “Big Brother,” Wonder sings “I live in the ghetto” and denounces a sanctimonious politician who wants his vote but is “tired of me protesting.”’

Tom Russell - Bakersfield
Tom Russell Bakersfield Tom Russell
Hotwalker HighTone Records 2014 Americana USSE90930832
Pedal steel guitar by Fats Kaplin. Wash. Post review: ‘…resembles a Ken Burns documentary without the visuals. The subject is the bohemian LA of the 1950s and '60s, and Russell mixes songs, voice-over narration, background instrumentals, interview excerpts and archival audio to evoke that time and place so vividly that you don't miss the absent photos and film stock. It was a culture of down-and-out hipsters who drank prodigiously and created groundbreaking art just as prodigiously. They drew inspiration from itinerant Beat poets, from Tijuana's accordion bands and bordellos, from Dust Bowl ballads, from Hollywood B-movies, from Bakersfield honky-tonk bands, from South L.A.'s black gospel choirs and from one another.’

Bowie recorded Young Americans within a week at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, with the help of mostly African American soul and funk musicians and John Lennon. Sigma Sound’s where Bowie "found his soul." Joe Tarsia, the recording engineer and owner of Sigma Sound, who was among the architects of the lush, fervent blend of soul, disco and funk known as the Sound of Philadelphia, died earlier this month. Tarsia worked with producers Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell on blockbuster hits by Philadelphia soul luminaries like the O’Jays and the Delfonics. Known for his precision at the mixing board and his imaginative use of echo and other ambient effects, Mr. Tarsia was the engineer on scores of gold and platinum recordings.

The Goddess Wears a Dirty Crown - Single Edan Archer 2022 Americana QZNJZ2274040
‘Edan Archer is the type of woman who co-writes odes to liquor with her mom and has a repertoire of murder ballads at the ready at all times — some of which were written by her, others which have been passed down as folk songs since the Renaissance era. She grew up in Gainesville, FL, singing Appalachian music around the house with her mom and two sisters. Even at a young age, the dark themes of those traditional songs crept into her songwriting. On her forthcoming album, she champions the working class, celebrates the raw, wild power of the divine feminine, and spins tragic tales about No Good Johnnys and the flawed women who love them.’

Rolling Stones - Good Times Bad Times
Rolling Stones Good Times Bad Times Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies} London 1972 Blues
A compilation album by the Rolling Stones released in December 1972 on London Records. The album was a follow-up to the hugely successful Hot Rocks 1964–1971. This was the second "post-contract" compilation released under the aegis of London/ABKCO Records after the termination of the Stones relationship with ABKCO and Decca Records. Because of the nature of the contract, the Stones lost all control over their pre-1971 recordings and this album was released without their input or consent. ABKCO and Decca would continue to release such un-authorized albums over the next several decades. This was originally the ‘B’ side of It’s All Over Now, released 1964.
