Happy New Year!
Brian D 12:00:30 PM
Happy New Calendar Day Dan!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:01:01 PM
We did it! Who woulda thought?
Patrick White 12:02:17 PM
Happy New Year to Dan and Brian D.Jonathan Richman was great in the Velvet Underground documentary.
Brian D 12:02:37 PM
That is on my list for this weekend.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:03:21 PM
It has my humble endorsement as well.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:04:01 PM
When I lived in SF in the 90s, he was often spotted around.
Patrick White 12:04:43 PM
The VU and their entourage reaction to California Hippy ethos is priceless.
Brian D 12:05:16 PM
The mighty Horse rides again
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:06:24 PM
Neil is always busy...
Joe 12:06:54 PM
Great start to your show DB.. great to hear some new music from "the old guard"
Patrick White 12:07:08 PM
Any Mummers Music on the.playlist.Dan?
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:07:42 PM
Thanks! I usually check in with a new Neil release....
Brian D 12:08:41 PM
Roy Clark's version of "Golden Slippers" is a hoot. (The Mummers most played tune probably).
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:08:59 PM
A three hour tribute to the Ramones featuring all your favorite string bands....
Brian D 12:09:22 PM
Anyone alive in the 70s and 80s may remember a cereal commercial for Golden Grahams that used the tune as well.
Brian D 12:09:50 PM
Nutley Brass did a fun Ramones instrumental lp years back
Brian D 12:10:00 PM
Heard on WPRB of course...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:10:12 PM
"Oh, those golden grahams"
Brian D 12:10:19 PM
YES!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:10:38 PM
"Golden honey, just a touch!"

Dan Buskirk (host) 12:12:38 PM
What game is on now?
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:12:58 PM
Up now, the sound of Camden, 1971!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:17:50 PM
Here's Eddie, the Funkadelic guitarist featured on the classic "Maggot Brain"....
Patrick White 12:19:02 PM
Penn State vscArkansas Notre Dame vs Oklahoma state later.Wouldnt it be great if they had Sun Ra Arkestra do half time show.
Brian D 12:20:23 PM
Eddie solo is so good.
Patrick White 12:20:29 PM
Camden 1971 you could cruise down Broadway to buy this record at Broadway Eddies.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:25:07 PM
Broadway Eddie's! I miss all those 12" parlours...
Roffle... 12:27:32 PM
Camden NJ? I remember walking across the Ben Franklin Bridge and thinking it needed lots of bulldozers back in the 80's. No offense, I love what you are playing.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:30:57 PM
I lived in a rowhouse right on the Ben Franklin bridge in the late '80s, guess your wish came true, that place isn't there anymore.
Brian D 12:30:58 PM
East Philly. I saw a big name rock band put out official release live recordings back in the 2000s. The front cover of their show from that Camden indoor/outdoor venue states "Philadelphia". Oh well.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:31:46 PM
Which band was that?
Brian D 12:32:21 PM
Pearl Jam. By "I saw" I mean I viewed the cd cover.
Patrick White 12:33:49 PM
Camden High Panthers basketball number 4 in the nation.Mayor Carstarphen making the city better.SacredcHeart Church helping people with food and housing.Outdoor Jazz at wiggins Park.No bulldozers needed.
Roffle... 12:33:50 PM
@Dan Buskirk My friend's dad was a VP for Campbell Soup and probably had something to do with that. Sorry if that was a problem.
Brian D 12:33:51 PM
I have seen some fun shows there (Neil and the Horse at least 3-4 times). But I dread driving into that city or out of it. "Hey let's close all of the streets that easily lead back to the interstate and bridge(s) so that the concert goers can get lost and drive through burned out Camden neighborhoods at 11pm..." Great planning.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:37:06 PM
Besides living there in the 80s, I've spent a fair amount of time in Camden over the years, I can;t help by feel protective of it. My parents had their first big date there, seeing TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE in a theater in 1950.
Brian D 12:37:40 PM
I am a Mann Music Center fan from way back and still resent that venue stealing the thunder away from the Mann. I missed a grass parking lot tail gate scene right next to the venue. But I still went across the bridge to Camden. I heard some used that ferry to cross for concerts but they stopped their last trip at some crazy earlier hour causing mad rush before the encores across the river.
Brian D 12:38:23 PM
Saw a fun Willie Nelson & Bob Dylan double bill at that minor league ball park right by the bridge in Camden. That park had a perfect angle to the view of the bridge and Phila. Well constructed.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:39:07 PM
I took the ferry over to see the Who with my brother in law around 2002. A fun night.
Roffle... 12:39:16 PM
Your music brain is bigger than anything I have ever noticed in my ventures through Camden. Just sayin'
Roffle... 12:40:33 PM
I Lived in Moorestown and Glassboro. Not hanging in Camden at all.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:40:39 PM
Thanks, been obsessed with this stuff since I was a 3 year old memorizing the label (cuz I couldn't read).
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:41:08 PM
I spent time in Glassboro too, but I'm a Salem County kid....
Roffle... 12:42:02 PM
I visited the NUKE! lol!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:42:40 PM
"The Second Sun"
Brian D 12:43:45 PM
The Who and Jimmy Page/Black Crowes were doing a leap frog thing back then. They would play consecutive nights at a venue. I think they had same management and our touring production... cut down on costs and there was a deal if people bought a 2 night package of tickets etc.
Patrick White 12:44:07 PM
Did Richard Dawson put out any records with Bob Crane.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:44:17 PM
I remember a few science lessons paid for by the nuclear industry when I was i elementary school
Brian D 12:44:37 PM
Yes Patrick and they were produced by John Carpy Carpenter haha
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:45:08 PM
Not sure that super-kissy Richard Dawson would survive the me too movement.....
Roffle... 12:45:16 PM
@Dan Buskirk Hell yea! I remember the reactor models!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:46:14 PM
"Our friend, the atom."
Roffle... 12:46:56 PM
@Brian D I love your comprehensive nature.
Roffle... 12:47:21 PM
This tune could be Sparks... lol
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:48:48 PM
Yeah, that Finnish band Circle was a big favorite of mine in the 90s, back when I was still mail ordering a lot of records through little companies...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:49:19 PM
Chuck, playing guitar in his hometown club in 2006
Patrick White 12:51:45 PM
Chuck Berry hometown Saint Louis?
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:53:05 PM
Yep. They just came out with recordings he made in "The Duck Walk Room" on the St Louis club he played regularly, with a band featuring his son. Chuck is real engaged and the guitar playing is off the hook...
Roffle... 12:53:28 PM
@Dan Buskirk - I got a vinyl of a Van Wilks release for super cheap online that was out of copyright production since the 80's. I just don't get it, but there it is sometimes.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:54:42 PM
Yeah, a lot of rare records I've searched years for before I realized they're available for a song online....
Roffle... 12:55:00 PM
I saw Chuck Berry once. lol
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:55:38 PM
He could be a mixed bag in the pick up gigs
Brian D 12:58:02 PM
Great concert rider , backstage demands, stage & band requirement reads.
Patrick White 12:58:32 PM
I think he used to play Valley forge music Fair and those Geator compilation gigs.
Brian D 12:58:51 PM
So many LPs that I was really interested in this year popping up on the set today Dan!
Roffle... 12:59:39 PM
I heard CB showed up this his guitar and amp, and just wanted the check on the way out.
Brian D 1:00:29 PM
Saw a great Gordon Lightfoot gig at VF Music Fair in mid 90s. Spinning stage. Like Willie Nelson, Gord had the same band for 30-40+ years or so. String arrangements were quieted down and played faintly by a keyboardist which made for big improvement. Hearing the more stripped down songs.
Brian D 1:01:58 PM
Another great documentary the Gord one. Well done. It was on Prime earlier in 2021... not sure now.
Roffle... 1:01:59 PM
Canadian superstar for sure!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:03:50 PM
Lots of "Best of 2021" overflow from the upcoming "Best of 2021" show Monday...
Selecta Jerry 1:03:58 PM
Happy New Year everyone! Just want to say what a pleasure and an honor it will be to follow a true music man the likes of Dan Buskirk today. Much Respect to you Dan! 🔥
Brian D 1:04:33 PM
HNY Jerry!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:04:40 PM
Geez, thanks Selecta, glad you'll be taking the reins!
Patrick White 1:05:10 PM
Happy New Year to Selecta Jerry.
Roffle... 1:05:21 PM
This is a fine Saturday ride!
Patrick White 1:07:09 PM
Hey Dan I'm reading an article about.Shane McGowan.and the first thing I said is This guy's still alive??
Selecta Jerry 1:07:10 PM
🙏🏼🔥🎶
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:08:49 PM
Yeah, I'm wasn't 100 percent sure Shane was still part of the mortal coil....
Roffle... 1:09:15 PM
@Patrick White - Wait! Is he?
Patrick White 1:09:23 PM
I listen to Iggy Pops weekly show.He is a big adherent of Ben Lamar Gay.
Patrick White 1:10:44 PM
Looks like he's in bad shape but somehow still with us.He makes Keith Richard's look like Pat Boone
Roffle... 1:12:12 PM
Wow, guess those blood transfusions really do work. lol
Brian D 1:13:48 PM
I stopped my SXM satellite subscript the other day after 15 years. I really liked some of the celeb curated "shows" or random playlists with taped audio whatever they used. David "Sri-Lama-Dama-Ding-Dong" Johanssen was one. Larry Kirwan from Black 47's celtic show was great. And for a while there Bernie Taupin had a good one w/a cohost. And Andrew Loog Oldham had a good one. He broadcast from Venezuela. Heard the Lou Reed/Hal Wilner show only a few times.
Brian D 1:15:35 PM
If you watch that Pogues documentary from 20 yrs ago or so you will hear Shane's cchhggghhh chghhhghh.... raspy laugh like the Snaggletooth cartoon character in your head for weeks afterward. Ironic that the character it reminded me of contains "tooth" in its name...
Roffle... 1:15:58 PM
Dropped my SXM a while ago. Nice when your driving across the desert or mountians though.
Brian D 1:18:45 PM
True Roffle. I will miss it. No complaints, great ride for 15 yrs. But I got addicted to this terrestrial radio station in central New Jersey ....
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:19:13 PM
...and the rest is history....
Brian D 1:19:21 PM
This Leo N was a real nice treat in the long list of unearthed treasures that keep cropping up.
Roffle... 1:19:46 PM
@Brian D - The genius is at home here. I love it too.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:20:42 PM
Yeah, this Leo record couldn't be more out of the blue...
Brian D 1:20:57 PM
Ya... WPRB I always had it as a radio preset since I first had a used car to drive around. Some years more listens than others. Then in the past 10-20 years the pie chart of daily "non PRB devoted hours" and "PRB devoted hours" had a big change of color distribution.
Patrick White 1:20:57 PM
He sounds like that Rodriquez guy that they rediscovered a few years ago. From detroit Mi.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:21:26 PM
And gives me another excuse to whip out some Meters....
Roffle... 1:22:14 PM
Worthy guitar licks.
Patrick White 1:22:16 PM
I wish I would have saved all my cassettes I recorded ofvPRB programs.
Brian D 1:23:35 PM
We have a crazy Rodriguez live story involving rowdy Ft Lauderdale area fans in a posh sit down theater about 5 years ago.... Sixto likes his pre game beverages it seems. And he is vision impaired apart from the drink .There was a long delay getting him helped on stage. Opening act, then an improvised 2nd opening act of his daughter trying to play and sing. Then Rodriguez! The voice was great! It took about 10 songs in for his right and left hands to sync up on the guitar tho. But a great memory
Brian D 1:25:24 PM
The crowd was buying double shot mixed drinks for the entirety of the show. No "shut down the bar at half time" rule there. 90 % yelling whooping (in a posh seated theater where you'd see ballet, folk singers etc). And there was 1 guy next to us that was the "shhhh Police Sgt". He kept trying to admonish the crowd by telling them to be quiet... holding back the ocean...
Roffle... 1:27:19 PM
Some of us need to warm up. That's for sure. Left and right hands literally have minds of their own.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:34:33 PM
Crazy Rodriguez story!
Brian D 1:36:37 PM
Yes! I don't think warmups would have been possible nor helped Sixto Rodriguez that night ha! But all said... it was a fun show. He played all the faves. And that voice was unchanged 50 yrs later. So smooth. And after he got into the groove he made it work. The crazy contrast of performer, most of crowd and polite minority of others was remarkable tho. Great times!
Roffle... 1:37:04 PM
David Bromberg? Holy Shit! I loved The song he wrote with George Harrison! The Holdup was excellent!
Brian D 1:38:22 PM
Love Bromberg. Puts on a hell of a show. Great mix of styles. Putting horns in the mix on Irish, Scottish, English and Bluegrass fiddle tunes...
Coastal.Loon 1:38:36 PM
Heckk yeah Special Interest Rips!!
Brian D 1:38:51 PM
Love The Holdup too. Great tune
Roffle... 1:39:35 PM
I think he sells violins and stuff in Delaware now. I forget...
Brian D 1:40:03 PM
He returned to performing live 20 years ago as well after taking a break to learn the violin craft. Still touring.
Roffle... 1:40:35 PM
Love you Brian! lol
Brian D 1:40:37 PM
Great guitar player/teacher from up here in Bucks Co, Mark Cosgrove, is in his band now. Great guy.
Brian D 1:42:12 PM
Fri Jan 28 Capitol Theater Port Chester, NY. And Sat Jan 29 in Phoenixville, PA if those are still on. Just checked his site. 50th anniversary tour it seems.
Roffle... 1:43:32 PM
That could be a thing! Cool!
Lawrence King 1:43:50 PM
This song right here!!
Brian D 1:44:45 PM
Oooh the one in NY featuring John McEuen of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Betty LaVette, Steve Earle, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams... wow... wish I was into going to indoor shows.
Roffle... 1:45:24 PM
Yea, COVID dictates now...
Roffle... 1:47:26 PM
This is a wicked piece of music!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:48:12 PM
The Tuareg music scene...
Brian D 1:48:27 PM
That Les Filles lp is on my list too
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:48:46 PM
Yeah, love that stuff...
Roffle... 1:50:14 PM
Nice Shit Dan. I can live with girl bands flying past my ears all day.
Brian D 1:51:04 PM
Loved the Mali guitar vocal sound the past 5 years or so found out about that whole thing. Then that Les Filles introduced me to the Niger sound
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:51:28 PM
Great Johnny Thunders knock-off here...
Brian D 1:51:52 PM
YA! Totally Johnny Thunders,Willy Nile, Jim Carroll etc...
Roffle... 1:52:51 PM
"Died under extremely mysterious circumstances"
Patrick White 1:54:09 PM
Jim Carroll was one unique and interesting talent.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:55:11 PM
I remember seeing Carroll do "People Who Died" on SNL....
Patrick White 1:59:15 PM
Love the Ravens. They were a mainstay on Charlie Horners.great.doo wop show on Ivy league Station we won't name.
Roffle... 1:59:32 PM
Doo-wop is what it do.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:05:01 PM
Terry Manning produced all those classic ZZ Top records, and made one album himself...
Brian D 2:05:54 PM
Heard about him in the Zed Zed Top documentary. Another great doc. Crazy cover!
Roffle... 2:06:16 PM
OMG, a guitar that only will plug into the 60's. I can deal with it.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:07:53 PM
Discovered this record in the 80s, a long time fave. On Stax's Enterprise label and recorded at Memphis' Ardent studios.
Roffle... 2:08:55 PM
Homework pays off!
Brian D 2:10:48 PM

Moor Mother, between Irreversible Entanglements and Black Encyclopedia of the Air, was with me a lot in 2021. I found the vinyl of that Moor Jewelry record too...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:35:24 PM
The Beverly Glenn-Copeland revival was unexpected.
James Simmons 2:36:19 PM
Hey Dan, Thanks for the tip on the Heartbreakers re-issue. I just ordered it. Been wanting to get it for a while now.
Roffle... 2:36:23 PM
This piece is hitting on way many levels! Wow!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:36:49 PM
This Japanese trio Kuunatic has gotten a lot of response on the chat.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:37:21 PM
Yeah James, Wild to hear that muddy Heartbreakers record finally sound great!
Patrick White 2:37:39 PM
Moor Mother was doing a lot of shows.Did you get to see her livecDan?
Mike Lupica 2:38:09 PM
I was verrry late to the Beverly Glenn-Copeland party, but that "Transmissions" re-issue was one of my favorite things of last year.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:38:09 PM
Yes. A talent of our times.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:39:21 PM
Well sold Beverly Glenn-Copeland out of our New Age section when I worked at Tower in the late 80s.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:41:16 PM
Suzanne Ciani was another New Age artist I overlooked until their revival...
Roffle... 2:41:43 PM
I have not been to a Tower Records since I lived in Seattle. Years ago.... lol
Mike Lupica 2:43:51 PM
Dan, if you don't mind sharing, which Tower location were you working in?
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:44:02 PM
Wish there was still a big box music store.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:45:09 PM
Tower South Street in Philly. I was the Country/Folk/New Orleans buyer upstairs. King Britt was the 12" buyer downstairs at the time, great guy.
Patrick White 2:45:37 PM
I miss ThirdcStreet Jazz and Sound Of Market.
Mike Lupica 2:45:52 PM
Me too. The old J&R Music World in downtown NYC was a favorite haunt for years. They opened at, like, 8 AM so for a little while, I was able to go record shopping *before work* while en route to Jersey from Brooklyn.
Mike Lupica 2:46:10 PM
King Britt, nice!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:47:00 PM
Ah, a morning record store stop, that would be nice (glad Jupiter and Rec Ex both open at 10am).
Mike Lupica 2:47:33 PM
The Tower across the street from Other Music was also THEE spot to find crazy 99 cent cutouts in the 90s. I still have the 100 Flowers discography disc with the .99 cent Tower sticker on it. I got rid of all my CDs years ago, but I saved that one, mostly for the pricetag.
Patrick White 2:47:51 PM
Mike years ago before first Towers were built that area was Radio Row.Music and Recording stores everywhere.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:48:18 PM
I remember Britt pulling me into the record booth to hear "Doowatchyalike" from Digital Underground, like, "Isn't this the greatest!?"
Roffle... 2:48:35 PM
Cutouts are the Godsend!
Roffle... 2:49:16 PM
Or were at least.
Mike Lupica 2:49:19 PM
A former PRB DJrecently posted on Twitter: What this city really needs is a late-night vintage clothing shop that also sells ice cream, pie, records, and cigarettes.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:49:37 PM
In San Fran in the 90s they had a Tower Outlet, which was a constant source of incredible deals.
Mike Lupica 2:50:21 PM
Yes! I remember the Tower Outlet! That place ruled. My 90s SF memories are fading, but wasn't that kinda near the SF Rough Trade?
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:51:07 PM
I just realized Lorenzo's on South Street is closed during late night. Feeling insecure about not knowing where a slice can be procured after two a.m.....
Mike Lupica 2:51:18 PM
@Patrick, yep, for sure! J&R hung on long after everything else went kaplooey. A weird outpost that felt like downtown's last bastion of old NYC for a while.
Patrick White 2:51:52 PM
Thanks Dan Wonderful show today.Hope to see you bright and early tomorrow on Broad.Street.for.Mummers.
Mike Lupica 2:53:13 PM
I gotta bang out, team, but thanks for the great show, Dan! Someone tell Selecta Happy New Year for me!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:53:16 PM
There was a Rough Trade on Haight, but the Tower Outlet I'm thinking was in the South of Market area, it was some lonely bus ride to nowhere to get out there. But I got loads of Japanese Blue Note CD imports for 4.99...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:53:44 PM
Thanks for stopping by, New NY Mike!
