Jimi Hendrix “If 6 Was 9”
from Easy Rider (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) [Deluxe Edition] MP3 Album (Hip-O Records www.4ad.com/ 2004) —Hendrix apparently coined the term "Let Your Freak Flags Fly" in this song originally released on 1967's AXIS BOLD AS LOVE. The EASY RIDER soundtrack was released in 1969.

The Negro Problem “Mahnsanto”
from Joys And Concerns CD Album (Fire Records 2009) —A relatively obscure LA indie-rock band from the '90s, The Negro Problem came to more significant attention when they debuted the Tony Award-winning musical PASSING STRANGE in 2008. This album was originally released in 1999.


The Bellrays “Revolution Get Down”
from The Red, White & Black MP3 Album (Alternative Tentacles 1995) —Riverside's The Bellrays rock out a la The MC5, their frontwoman Lisa Kekaula has also hosted a radio program at KUCR in Riverside, CA.


Tamar-kali “Boot”
from Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul EP MP3 Album (OyaWarrior Records 2003) —This track served as something of the theme song to James Spooner's important & influential 2003 documentary, AFRO-PUNK: THE ROCK'N'ROLL N***ER EXPERIENCE.

The Gories “Trick Bag”
from Outta Here MP3 Album (Crypt Records 1992) —Frontman Mick Collins of Detroit's The Gories has further explored a bluesy MC5-influenced garage-rock sound with his ongoing project The Dirtbombs.


The Dears “Whites Only Party”
from Gang of Losers MP3 Album (Universal Music Australia Pty. Ltd. Interscope 2006) —Canadian indie-rock band The Dears address race issues in this import-only track.


Death “Rock-N-Roll Victim”
from ...For the Whole World to See (Drag City 2009) —The tracks on this Drag City release are lost Afro-punk songs from 1974 recording sessions by this rock group from Detroit, MI.


Bad Brains “I Against I” CD Album (SST Records 1986) —The title track from a 1986 album by the most successful Black punk-band ever, Washington, D.C.'s Bad Brains. Many acknowledge Bad Brains as the pioneers of hardcore punk-rock.

Ten Grand “I Will Seriously Pay You to Shut Up”
from This Is the Way to Rule MP3 Album (Southern Records 2002) —Matt Davis was one of the four main figures profiled in the 2003 documentary AFRO-PUNK, along with his multi-racial "screamo" band Ten Grand (formerly The Vida Blue). He died tragically that same year at the age of 26 after a seizure. RIP Matt.


Fishbone “The Suffering”
from Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Present: The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx MP3 Album (Hollywood Records 2000) —Music bed for voiceover. This hugely important ska/funk/punk-rock group from L.A. was recently the subject of a 2012 documentary film, EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: THE STORY OF FISHBONE.
