El Vez “Brown Christmas [Hidden Track]”
from Merry MeX-mas MP3 Album (Sympathy for the Record Industry 2012) —A live, tongue-in-cheek "radical Chicano" spoof of A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS (to the tune of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus & Lucy"), questioning why there are no Latinos in the Peanuts series.

Smiley “The Commencement (1989)”
from The Smile Gets Wild MP3 Album (Bryant Records 1991) —Hip hop sampling Vince Guaraldi's PEANUTS cartoon theme, "Linus & Lucy." Music bed for intro of my 2nd CHARLIE BROWN XMAS special, paying tribute too to Matt Zoller Seitz's video A LITTLE LOVE: THE ART OF BILL MELENDEZ about the PEANUTS cartoon director.

Vince Guaraldi “Linus And Lucy”
from Vince Guaraldi and the Lost Cues, Vol. 2 MP3 Album (D & D Records 2007) —A Hammond organ-heavy version of the familiar PEANUTS cartoon theme.

Quincy Jones and His Orchestra “Cast Your Fate To The Wind”
from Plays the Hip Hits (Bonus Track Version) MP3 Album (Jazz Classics 2012) —Jones' cover of Guaraldi's hit from JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF BLACK ORPHEUS, which scored him his PEANUTS gig. Music bed for voiceover introducing Matt Zoller Seitz's thesis from A LITTLE LOVE.

from Merry MeX-mas MP3 Album (Sympathy for the Record Industry 2012) —Music bed for voiceover, continuing Zoller Seitz's intro from A LITTLE LOVE. This version shows a real affection for Guaraldi & Schulz, belying the critique of "Brown Christmas."

Vince Guaraldi Trio “Skating”
from A Charlie Brown Christmas (Expanded Edition) CD Album (Concord Records, Inc. 2006) —Music bed for voiceover, reading Matt Zoller Seitz's description of director Bill Melendez's modernist aesthetics in A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS.

JK-47 “Christmas Time Iz Here”
from Lost & Founds MP3 Album (Catapult 2011) —Quoting Zoller Seitz's analysis of Melendez's existential, very cinematic framings of a skating scene in ACBC, I next play the song heard in that seq. (remixed) & close with MZS's take on his manipulation of backgrounds to reflect characters' interiority.

Canadian Brass “Skating (arr. B. Ridenour for brass quintet and percussion)”
composed by Vince Guaraldi
from Christmas Time Is Here MP3 Album (Steinway and Sons 2013) —Music bed for voiceover commentary setting up MZS's take on Melendez's "Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron" dogfight brilliance.

Vince Guaraldi “African Sleigh Ride”
from Vince Guaraldi and the Lost Cues from the Charlie Brown TV Specials MP3 Album (D & D Records 2006) —One of my favorite "lost cues," featuring Vince Guaraldi's funky keys & syncopation.

Sufjan Stevens “Christmas In the Room”
from Silver & Gold CD Album (Asthmatic Kitty 2012) —A lovely, sophisticated, anti-commercialist Christmas song that would be at home in a Wes Anderson film. MZS has a new book on that great filmmaker, in fact. More on this connection later!

The Ventures “Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron”
composed by Phil Gernhard and Dick Holler
from Guitar Freakout (Capitol Records (CAP) 1967) —Music bed for voiceover, in which I touch on MZS's compelling linking of the Snoopy Sopwith Camel dogfight scene w/VERTIGO + 2001.

The Eric Byrd Trio “My Little Drum”
from A Charlie Brown Christmas MP3 Album (Foxhaven Records 2009)

N/A “N/A” MP3 Other (n/a 1979) —RUSHMORE (Wes Anderson 1998): Max Fischer's play dedication speech.

Them “I Am Waiting”
from Them (Digitally Remastered) MP3 Album (TTW 1970) —This excerpt is a music bed that allows me to read the closing words of MZS from A LITTLE LOVE & to sketch out his amazing RUSHMORE/Peanuts montage.

The Rolling Stones “I Am Waiting”
from The Rolling Stones 1963-1971 MP3 Album (ABKCO Music and Records, Inc. 2013)

N/A “N/A” MP3 Other (n/a 1979) —Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) introduces Herman Blume (Bill Murray) to Bert Fischer (Seymour Cassel) in Fischer's barber shop. Charlie Brown's dad was a barber? Pay attention to Wes Anderson's placement of Guaraldi's "Hark the Herald" in the background.

Colossus “Charlie Brown Cut Up”
from Home For The Holidays MP3 Comp (Om Records 2008) —Remixes Vince Guaraldi's "Hark the Herald." Outro provides music bed for more commentary on issues of diversity in PEANUTS.

Cyrus Chestnut “Me And Charlie Brown (Piano Solo) ( LP Version )”
from A Charlie Brown Christmas MP3 Album (Atlantic / Wea 2000) —Music bed for voiceover commentary discussing diversity in PEANUTS comics & cartoons. One reason I think this strip is entitled to a bye? Why do you think they made jazz the musical genre for all of the PEANUTS scores?

Sufjan Stevens “What Child Is This Anyway?”
from SONGS for CHRISTMAS MP3 Album (Asthmatic Kitty 2006) —I'll always associate Elliott Smith w/Wes Anderson's ROYAL TENNENBAUMS (which features "Needle in the Hay"). Whenever I hear Sufjan Stevens' epic Christmas catalogue, I can't help but think he'd really get along w/Mr. Anderson too.

John Zorn “The Christmas Song”
from A Dreamers Christmas MP3 Comp (Tzadik Records 2011) —Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, & Fantomas fame, provides vocals for this jazzy, mostly straight, cover of the Mel Torme/Bob Wells standard.

The Royal Guardsmen “Snoopy's Christmas (Remastered)”
from Snoopy vs. The Red Barron / Snoopy and His Friends MP3 Comp (Capitol Records 2001) —Excerpt, show outro. These Florida rockers hit w/a novelty song about Schulz's iconic dog & his WWI fantasies. My selection pays homage to Matt Zoller Seitz's trippy cinematic interpretation of Snoopy's dogfight in THE GREAT PUMPKIN.
