While "Funk and Weirdness" will primarily play music, from a vast variety of genres and time periods (20th and 21st centuries), I hope to eventually have semi-regular, hour-long segments within the program, during which local musicians/bands, artists, etc. will join me to discuss their work, the Twin Cities' music scene, and upcoming events. It is possible that I will introduce weekly themes into the show, but the program will revolve around promoting two of my favorite things: the funky and the weird. Funk will be considered very broadly as in many "funky" genres will be featured: soul, RnB, blues, jazz, straight-ahead funk, funk rock, rock, punk, reggae, hip-hop, world music, electronic music, and any possible combination or fusion of the before mentioned or unmentioned genres. As long as the music makes you want to dance, it's fair game. Old classics, lesser known digs, and contemporary tunes, will all be played. As mentioned previously, "the weird" will also be a focal point of the show. So many of us, so often, feel weird—not necessarily good or bad, happy or sad, just weird. I believe that music is uniquely able to evoke feelings of weirdness and that within that weirdness is a cathartic release. What a beautiful feeling to feel weird! how lucky we are that we can dance to that weirdness! Strange sounds, vibes, instrumentations, rhythms, vocal styles etc. will be showcased. In between tunes, I will give some context to the previous song and talk about what is funky and weird about it—brief and light musical analysis may be involved. Additionally, I feel that a two hour segment will allow me to find the right balance between the more “out there” stuff and the more straight-ahead tunes so that the program remains fun for audiences to listen to. Hopefully "Funk and Weirdness" will inspire listeners to move their bodies in new ways and to not fear the weirdness, but embrace it as a complex, beautiful, and uniquely human emotion.
