A mix of new releases, old faves, and listener requests

Oct. 2 is the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and we celebrate with songs about the great leader and teacher of nonviolent resistance, and related global sounds.

Three birthdays of note this week: King Sunny Ade, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Lata Mangeshkar. Each achieved some global success, and this week’s show features their music along with other artists who have found global success and influenced the path of popular music.

Mickey Hart was born this month in 1943. He had an early career with a modestly successful jam band, but is known to Spin The Globe listeners more for his work in collaborating with and recording musicians including Bela Fleck, The Gyuto Monks, Zakir Hussain, Jazayer, and Ustad Sultan Khan, to name a few. We’ll celebrate his global music connections this week.

This show started in September 1998 — This week we’ll revisit the world music landscape from way back then, and highlight a few particularly influential artists and albums. If you’ve been listening from the beginning, we’d love to hear from you.

Plus an interview with Ed Hanley, who plays tabla with Autorickshaw and has a new short film out called Mushroom.

July 4 marks Independence Day here in the USA, but some are still fighting for their liberation and a full recognition of their rights. So we'll hear global music of struggle, solidarity, and the inevitable triumph of liberty and justice for all.
