Previewing the 36th SBIFF + An Interview with Filmmaker Aaron Maurer on the Opening Night Film: INVISIBLE VALLEY

On today's edition of "The FPT" (Monday, March 29th, 11am-12noon PDT), special guest-host and KCSB-FM senior film correspondent Harry Lawton helps me preview the 36th anniversary edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which opens on Wednesday night, March 31st, at two drive-in screens set up at Santa Barbara City College, and online. The festival runs yet again for ten days, as is traditional, but this year incorporates this outdoor cinema component while also making its tributes, panels, and screenings (most of which are receiving premieres of some kind) available via an online platform, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the second half of the program, we speak with filmmaker Aaron Maurer, director of the new documentary, Invisible Valley, which tells "disparate stories of undocumented farmworkers, wealthy snowbirds, and music festival-goers over the course of a year in California's Coachella Valley. In exploring the history as well its imperiled future, the film uncovers an imminent environmental and social crisis, and the looming consequences for the people who call it home." Invisible Valley is receiving its world premiere at SBIFF.

"The Freak Power Ticket" airs Mondays from 11am-12noon PDT at 91.9 FM (or www.kcsb.org), with an archival recording up for two weeks thereafter at the same URL.
