Music

With Rich Reese

Pop! The Beat Bubble Burst explores the music of the sixties with an emphasis on British Invasion and Mersey Beat. It then traces those branches to the present day by playing music that echoes the music of the sixties including power pop, jangle pop, pub rock, glitter and glam rock, neo-psychedelia and indie pop.

P!TBBB 627 - August 13, 2020

Pop! The Beat Bubble Burst celebrates 12 years on air at KDHX today! As we have done the past 11 years, it's 2 hours of Beatles covers - This year we feature vocal duets. Thanks to all who helped me do a better show and thanks to all who have ever had a kind word regarding this show. It is an honor and a privilege that I do not take lightly!

The Art of Time Ensemble includes many creative endeavors including art, dance, creative writing and music. Back in the 2010's they put together a group of musicians to tour the U.S. and perform Sgt. Pepper and a few other Beatles songs from that era. This is a live recording from one of those shows. The musicians are as follows: Andy Maize - voice, John Mann - voice, Craig Northey - voice, Steven Page - voice, Carolyn Blackwell - viola, Andrew Burashko - piano, Alastair Eng - cello, John Johnson - woodwinds, Lary Larson - trumpets, VĂ©ronique Mathieu - violin, Rachel Mercer - cello, Douglas Perry - viola, Joe Phillips - bass, Rob Piltch - guitars, Rick Sacks - drums/percussion, Stephen Sitarski - violin. About 5 years ago, they came to the Sheldon (with the Wesley Stace subbing in for one of the voices listed above). It was a truly magical evening of music.

Elton John joined John Lennon on piano and vocals for Lennon's 1974. Elton said, "It's going to be a #1". Lennon said if it is, he'd join him on stage. The song hit #1, so Lennon agreed to join Elton on Thanksgiving for his Madison Square Garden show. He performed three songs with Elton, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" and This one. Here is a rehearsal version of the track done a day or 2 prior to the concert. This song was suggested by my friend, Eric Mueller (Host of the Pod-cast-like program - The Eric Mueller Show from The Rock n Roll Vault). Various ‎– Revolver Reloaded (Mojo Presents Their 1966 Masterpiece Covered In Full) Mojo Magazine 2006
This one is a suggestion by my fellow KDHX dj, bobEE Sweet of Uncontrollable Urge fame (Wednesdays from noon - 2) - From Allmusic: Artist Biography by Joslyn Layne Husband-and-wife duo the Handsome Family have been labeled both alt-country and traditionalist, but truthfully their often dark music lies in a unique space somewhere in between, blending the sounds of traditional country and bluegrass (and, especially, murder ballads) into a more modern scenery. Vocalist and composer Brett Sparks hails from Texas, where he studied music and briefly worked around the oil rigs. By the mid-'90s, he resided in Chicago with his wife Rennie Sparks, a fiction writer originally from Long Island. Brett persuaded Rennie to write lyrics for him, leading to the unusual and striking form of the Handsome Family's songs -- evocative scenes and brief tales (of both the daydream and ghost-story varieties) in lieu of the standard verse-chorus-verse structure.

Jackson Browne, the quintessential sensitive California singer/songwriter of the early '70s teams up with Jennifer Warnes (from Allmusic: ) Grammy- and Oscar-winning American singer, songwriter, arranger, and record producer. With her crystalline alto she has succeeded in several areas of popular music -- as a singer of contemporary pop and country, chart-topping movie themes, and arguably, the most empathic and authoritative interpreter of Leonard Cohen's songs (as evidenced by her 1986, career-defining album Famous Blue Raincoat, exclusively comprised of his work). She's also an in-demand backing vocalist. While she broke into the music business in the late 1960s, and has, on occasion, taken long sabbaticals, she remains active as a backing vocalist, songwriter and recording artist.

The Cactus Blossoms This Boy
Minnesota Beatles Project Vol. 5 Vega Productions 2013
Allmusic Artist Biography by Mark Deming The Cactus Blossoms sound uncannily like a sibling harmony act that just stepped off the stage of the Grand Ol' Opry or the Louisiana Hayride in the 1940s or '50s, and there's a good reason for that -- guitarists and singers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey are brothers (Jack adopted a stage name when he first stepped out as a singer/songwriter at the age of 19), and their voices fit together in a way that suggests a modern-day approximation of what the Everly Brothers and the Louvin Brothers could deliver. You're DreamingBorn and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Burkum and Torrey grew up on a musical diet of pop radio and classic Beatles albums, but the brothers also shared a taste for vintage country and folk tunes, and in 2010 they began playing out as a duo, adopting the handle the Cactus Blossoms.
