Summertime - Single Jazzman 2014

Well, once again, and back by popular demand (even if only in my own mind), I will play a different version of "Summertime" on every M2M episode taking place during the summer months. I don't show this version has been played on KDHX before. This is a reissue by a UK label of a single originally released on the Mercury label in 1965. This is really a great version. Written by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward and produced, conducted, and arranged by Gene Redd, Jr.

The only original on this album of sixteen of his favorite songs that he hand-picked so he could duet with some of his favorite female vocalists. We'll end this set the way it begun - with a song played during the wedding ceremony of the couple this set went out to. May there be many more wedding anniversaries in your future!

Paul Pena - Jet Airliner
Paul Pena Jet Airliner
New Train Hybrid 2000

I don't know how things like this happen. The songs for this album were recorded in 1973 but never saw the light of day until 2000. Paul Pena sings and plays guitar (piano on one track) on this album, and he wrote all of the songs including this one which ended up being a huge hit for Steve Miller. According to the liner notes, "Steve's version has sold millions of copies, and, at times, has literally kept Paul alive." Editor's note: Paul Pena passed away in 2005. Guests on these recordings include Jerry Garcia, Merle Saunders, Harvey Brooks, Gary Malabar, The Persuasions, The Funky Ladies (don't know who they are but they sound great), among others. In his early days, he studied flamenco music and later became adept at Tuvan throat singing which he taught himself from listening to recordings.

Birds in the Ceiling Old Omens 2022

"All the low down summer, there was nothin' there to lift you / You couldn't see just how much pain there was to sift through / And I stopped askin' how bad the world is broken / 'Cause no one's circumstances are ever really chosen / I guess it's a comfort, livin' your delusion / It makes me sad to see the kind of drugs you're using /The fear and anger, waves and waves of grief / I don't know how you missed it, your hero is a thief

Wakin' up again when I can't find a reason / I told you the truth, and you told me it was treason / I'm thinkin' back on all your pretty petals / Before you felt there was this score you had to settle / I wasn't sleepin', the moon was high this mornin' / When your certain kind of sorrow came and touched me without warning / And the lies you tell yourself to try and feel okay / Well they all come at a price that somebody has to pay / So come on down and claim your prize / It's nothin' like they advertise /No one makes it out alive

The Spur No Quarter 2022

Craig Finn - Messing With the Settings
Craig Finn Messing With the Settings N
A Legacy of Rentals Positive Jams 2022

Beautiful (not an adjective I often use for his songs) and affecting song where the music enhances his lyrics that delve into the human condition about as well as anyone. Having the vocals of Cassandra Jenkins and Annie Nero on this album as a counter to his vocals works, wonderfully.

"We map where we've been by the scars on our skin.
We can only sing the songs we've been taught to.
Rachel always recommended messing with the settings.
She said it's better than settling for whatever they give you."
