Instrumental from 1952 featuring the alto saxophonist from Memphis, Chris Woods. He played with Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and later fronted the Chris Woods Sextet.

This compilation is from the original Specialty masters and the whole thing is solid gold. The liner notes in this by Don Waller are a great read, as well. Recorded for the Specialty label in 1957 and written by Little Richard and Enotris Johnson.

Originally released by the New Orleans singer on the A.F.O. label in 1962.

Written by Frank Wilson and Lena Manns and recorded in 1968. Wonderful lead vocal with Bobby Taylor with backing vocals by the Four Tops and The Vandellas.

You guessed it. Another version of the standard written by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward as my mission continues to play a different version of the song during every summer episode of M2M. Salena Jones is better known outside of the U.S., but she did tour and sing with the likes of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and recorded over forty albums in a career which spanned over sixty years.

Like the previous singer, Salena Jones, Esther Marrow also is from Newport News, VA. The album title might have tipped you off. This is a fine cover version of the J.J. Barnes song.
