1938 Kenny Malone, American Nashville-based session drummer (Dolly Parton; Dobie Gray: Waylon Jennings), born in Denver, Colorado (d. 2021). That's Kenny on this Dobie Gray song. Kenny played on hundreds, if not thousands of records. He had a unique style where he held a stick in one hand and used his other hand to play the drums like they were congas. He used this technique on "Drift Away".

1901 Louis Armstrong, American jazz trumpeter and singer ("Hello, Dolly!"; "What A Wonderful World"), born in New Orleans, Louisiana (d. 1971). Why is this in The Beatles Grab-Bag? you ask? Well, Beginning on February 1, 1964 when The Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand" hit no. 1 on the Billboard Pop Charts the held that no.1 spot for over three months ("She Loves You" and "Can't Buy Me Love") until May 9, 1964 when Louis Armstrong took over with this song. It was Louis' first no.1 - of course the chart had only been around since 1958. He also became the oldest artist to hit no. 1.

Based on an idea by US musician and writer Mare Rozzelle, New York Letters was originally conceived as a stage play, set during the period 1971-1980 and built around the fictional correspondence of John Lennon. The songs in the play were to be in the form of letters and messages, both to and from John. Mare asked UK based songwriter Glenn Prangnell to write the music for these songs and to chip in with any ideas and suggestions. The writing process went so well that it was decided to go ahead with putting together an album and think about the play later. And that's how this album came about.

During the 2020 lockdown, Slate performed over forty Facebook Live and Instagram Live streaming concerts to thousands of fans each week, including one for the Martin Guitars series “Jam In Place,” and released the live album Lockdown Live taken from those performances.

Tony Dow, TV's Wally Cleaver died last Wednesday at the age of 77. Cause of death was liver cancer.

Nichelle Nichols, TV's Lt. Nyota Uhura died of heart failure in Silver City, New Mexico, on July 30, 2022, at the age of 89. The "Theme from Star Trek" (originally scored under the title "Where No Man Has Gone Before")[1] is an instrumental musical piece composed by Alexander Courage for Star Trek, the science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry and originally aired between September 8, 1966, and June 3, 1969.

1936 Elsbeary Hobbs, American bass doo-wop vocalist (The Drifters - "There Goes My Baby"; "Save The Last Dance For Me"), born in NYC, New York (d. 1996). That's Elsberry on the distinctive bass vocal that opens this song. Couldn't imagine it without that voice.
