Thanks, so much, to X24, Fred Gumaer, and Caron House for doing such wonderful versions of the show during my absence. They all had their unique takes and captured the essence of the show. What more could an absentee honeymooning DJ ask for? - Music bed. Lonnie Mack had a hit with this instrumental version of this Chuck Berry song.

1967 debut single and soul-stomper recorded by the Philadelphia vocal quartet made up of two sets of brothers - two who were the younger brothers of Solomon Burke. Taken from the best sixties soul box set ever created.

Written by Leonard Feather (who I grew up just knowing him as the jazz critic for the LA Times but not realizing then he was a renowned composer and producer back then) and Lionel Hampton. Pretty amazing to make a recording this assured at the age of 21.

Alright, my mission to play a different version of "Summertime" each week during the summer continues. Thanks to X24, Fred Gumaer, and Caron House for keeping the streak alive. You know this version had to be played sooner or later! A vocal tour de force on this version of the standard composed by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward. Recorded in 1966.

They were billed as the Cockroaches when they played these two secret shows at the 300-seat El Mocambo club in Toronto on March 4-5, 1977. These shows have been bootlegged but this is the first time they've been officially released with far superior sound. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts were joined by Ian Stewart (piano), Billy Preston (keyboards), and Ollie Brown (percussion) for these shows. Highly recommended!

RIP Lamont Dozier who passed away this Monday at age 81. The songwriting triumvirate of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Brain Holland are responsible for some on the best-known songs in popular music and including many #1 hits for Motown (like this one). He also was an arranger and producer and was making records up to 2018.

From the NYT: In collaboration with the brothers Brian and Eddie Holland, Mr. Dozier wrote songs for dozens of musical acts, but the trio worked most often with Martha and the Vandellas (“Heat Wave,” “Jimmy Mack”), the Four Tops (“Bernadette,” “I Can’t Help Myself”) and especially the Supremes (“You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Baby Love”). Between 1963 and 1972, the team was responsible for more than 80 singles that hit the Top 40 of the pop or R&B charts, including 15 songs that reached No. 1. “It was as if we were playing the lottery and winning every time,” Mr. Dozier wrote in his autobiography, “How Sweet It Is” (2019, written with Scott B. Bomar).

An early Motown track here and featuring the first song written by Holland, Dozier, and Holland that was released. This was the only single he recorded for the Motown label and it came out in 1962 on the Mel-o-dy subsidiary label.

Written by Holland, Dozier, and Holland and recorded for Motown in 1965. The definitive version even though Eddie Holland's version is pretty great, too. It was also a big hit for the Doobie Brothers in 1975.

Ten of the twelve songs (including this one) on this album were written by Holland, Dozier, and Holland. I don't think I've heard a version of this song I haven't liked. Other versions previously played on M2M have been by Marvin Gaye, The Band, Alvin Robinson, Small Faces, and The Poets. There's probably more but that's what comes to mind.

I figured I'd play one from the Invictus label since this was the label formed by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland after they had a falling out over royalties with Berry Gordy Jr at Motown. They had a lot of hits on this label by Chairmen of the Board, Freda Payne, Parliament, Laura Lee, etc. Recorded for the Invictus label in 1969. "You got me hungry for your love / But you, you ain’t able / All you want to give me is the crumbs off the table." Penned by Ronald Dunbar, Scherrie Payne, and Edyth Wayne. This entire compilation is highly recommended..

This marks the third of the band’s four-album and four-companion film series. They are rolling out a new installment every month. Beautiful vocals by Susan Tedeschi and company on this majestic soul and gospel-tinged closing song.

Written by Ronnie Shannon and previously recorded by Aretha Franklin. This version was recorded for the Shiptown label based out of Norfolk, VA and was recorded in 1971. This is the latest compilation in the Eccentric Soul series put out by The Numero Group.

2021 non-LP single b-side by the soul and funk trio out of Seattle. Great news! They will be at Jazz St. Louis in October 5-9. Highly recommended!

RIP Olivia Newton-John who passed away at age 73 from breast cancer. (Editor's Note: Fuck cancer.) This Bob Dylan cover was recorded early in her career and sounds patterned off the George Harrison version. By all accounts I've heard she was a beautiful soul and did much to raise funds for cancer research. A long and iconic musical career.

All these songs on his new release were written in Spain where he was isolating himself and his family because of, well, you know why.

Dan Auerbach has put together a tribute album honoring a forty-plus year career of country singer-songwriter John Anderson and it was just released last Friday. Some of the other artists included on this are John Prine, Eric Church, Sturgill Simpson, Luke Combs, Del McCoury, and Sierra Ferrell. This was originally recorded by John Anderson in 1982.

Bonnie Raitt and Mavis Staples turned in excellent sets at the Fox Theater last Friday. This closing track was written by Bonnie Raitt and this story song sounds like it could be from the John Prine or Bruce Springsteen catalog.

This album is a desert island disc for me so I can't really be too objective about it. Peerless storytelling from my point of view.

Written by Hank Williams and recorded for the Imperial label in 1962. It's crazy. In 1962 he recorded three LPs plus some singles (including this one) with non-LP material. He kept that recording pace up for pretty much the period of 1956 through 1965.

Recorded in 1956 and featuring the lead vocals of Huey "Piano" Smith and backing vocals by Junior Gordon and Dave Dixon.
