I thought I'd take a page from the Pop! The Beat Bubble Burst playbook and start the show off with a Chuck Berry cover. This was taken from this new official release of two secret shows which took place at the 300-seat El Mocambo club in Toronto on March 4-5, 1977.

From All Music Guide: "Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" is at the very root of the Rolling Stones' sound. Not only did the Stones cover Berry more than they did any other songwriter, but "Around and Around" was actually the very first song they played in public. That performance took place when an ad hoc group of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and two musicians who wouldn't be part of the Rolling Stones when the group took off (Dick Taylor and Cyril Davies) performed the song in April 1962 at the Ealing Jazz Club in London.'

Motown rave-up written and recorded by Frank Wilson in 1965. Only two genuine original copies of this single which ended up not being released are known to exist. Check out Chris Clark's sublime version, as well.

Thanks to John Ellis for reminding me of this one. As noted last week, Lamont Dozier passed away at age 81. As part of the songwriting team of Eddie Holland, Jr, Lamont Dozier, and Brian Holland, they were responsible for so many hits of the sixties and seventies, and beyond. Levi Stubbs provides the amazing lead vocal.

Per the liner notes: Lamont Dozier consistently calls "I'm in a Different World" his favorite. "i thought it was the greatest song ever written," he told Mojo magazine. "But I guess it wasn't meant to be."

Soul ballad of the highest order written by Carolyn Franklin. Perfect way to close an album.

Thanks to the Numero Group for unearthing this soul gem. Written by Sam Dees and originally released on the Shiptown label circa 1974.

Sam Dees and David Camon. Sam Dees is a terrific singer in his own right but has written so many songs recorded by other artists such as Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, George Benson, The Temptations, and so many more.

As evidenced by the album title, this compilation is made up entirely of versions of songs written by Sam Dees. John Edwards was born in St. Louis in 1944 and recorded this song for the Aware label in 1973.

Dan Auerbach has been responsible for a whole host of terrific albums. This 2021 release is the third by the Louisiana blues and soul singer-songwriter. Produced by Dan Auerbach. Written by Robert Finley, Dan Auerbach, and Nashville/Memphis piano extraordinaire Bobby Wood. Joining Bobby Wood on this track is drummer great Gene Chrisman.

This is his only studio album recorded with backing by the Band and the entire album was recorded in three days. This is when he took his slight detour away from the Columbia label. Slightly ramshackle in the right way and rather overlooked, in my estimation.

Edgy and rocking version of the Bob Dylan song. I dig it.

Dan Auerbach put together this new tribute album honoring the forty-plus year career of country singer-songwriter John Anderson. This is one of John Prine's last recordings. Written by Gary Gentry and originally recorded by John Anderson in 1980.

Sam Nicholson is a really fine songwriter and harmonies have really been put to the forefront on the latest album by the Australian band now based out of Melbourne. Jangly, literate, and tuneful. They are touring the U.S. in September but, so far, are getting no closer than Chicago.

This band out of Auckland, NZ features the songwriting and vocals of John Guy Howell and Rachel Bailey.

Written by Chris Bailey. This completes the Australia/New Zealand quintfecta.

Music bed. Instrumental version of the Bob Buchanan / Gram Parsons song found on this instrumental tribute to the Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Radio" album from 1968 which both Lloyd Green and Jay Dee Maness both played pedal steel on.

Kip Loui, Carl Pandolfi, and Richard Tralles shared songwriting duties on this album. This one was written by bassist Richard Tralles. Diesel Island will be at the Tower Grove Farmers Market this Saturday (8/20) from 10am-noon.
