This album was the first solo release by the man known as Sunny Lowdown... For those who are up on your knowledge of brands of lye, well, Red Devil was, shall we say, infamous in blues lore.

Kid Man is a Sleepy John Estes song, who was a primary influence on the music of Dave Snaker Ray, who became an enormously influential musician in his own right out of Minnesota in the 1960s.

The DBB, accused of low down, dirty country blues, the defendant promises "the blues, the whole blues and nothing but the blues". Ha! Although many of the tunes approach big band blues...it's all great stuff courtesy of DB and crew.

Song arranged by JLW, whose gospel roots are so very, very deep - to include about a decade working the gospel circuit, to include much of the 1970s.

Song composed by Joe Thomas, who worked with Roy Tyler since 1972 in the Gospel Hummingbirds. Roy is singing the "straight" lead on this song.

Sad news to pass along, as Roy passed away around Aug 12th. This song is from RT's solo album, and is a reprise of a song he wrote and first recorded with the Gospel Hummingbirds for their Taking Flight album.

Composed by good friend and sometimes member of the group Morris Lee 'Duke' Coleman. The Carter Brothers were a real trio of brothers who deserve to be MUCH better known today - tremendous blues and then blues and soul out of the Los Angeles area from the 50s into the 70s.

Noted Chicago blues drummer and vocalist Casey Jones, with his most blue-centric solo album as opposed to his other more jazz/R&B focused efforts. Guitar here by Maurice John Vaughn, bass from Johnny B. Gayden.

The wonderful Trudy Lynn from 1991, on Atlanta's one-time great blues soul label Ichiban. Trudy is still going strong today, have released her Golden Girl album less than a year ago.

All songs composed by Ross and Hunt. an example of the soul blues sound developed in St. Louis in the 70s and the 80s. According to CH: “There’s just two musics that are never going to die—the blues and the country. That’s the basics. They are very close. That’s where it all come from."

Ray Charles, his Orchestra and The Raelettes - from a well recorded show in Stockholm, Sweden. Not available on CD, only LP and digital, although it was part of a massive box set from a year or so ago.

The more I listen, the more I think my favorite era of BB's music is his "Philly sound' of the early to mid-1970s. BB was always a soul singer of the highest order, and the spotlight is fully on his voice - which was at it's peak during this time frame. Most of the album was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philly.

This young cat is such and old soul, as well as a terrific singer, guitarist and composer. Check him out if you aren't aware!

GA-20 really got their sound dialed-in with their tribute to Hound Dog Taylor album, and the goodness only grows on this new album from the band. Dry Run is the first, and obvious, single from the records - so great !

Odell Elliott Brown Jr. - Born Louisville, Kentucky 2nd February 1940, died 3 May 2011 in Richfield, Minnesota, USA. - As well as organist and leader of Odell Brown & The Organ-izers, Odell was a "Staff musician" for Chess Records and worked and recorded with the majority of the label's artists. - In 1969, following the death of a band member Tommy Purvis, The Organ-izers was put on hold and Odell recorded a solo album Free Delivery and a further album of instrumental covers of Otis Redding tracks, Odell Brown Plays Otis Redding, on Cadet Records. He then decided not to re-sign to Chess and went on to become an independent song-writer, arranger and conductor, and was musical director / writer for Minnie Riperton, Johnny Nash, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye - In 1980 Odell co-wrote Sexual Healing with Marvin Gaye.
