Alright, this makes me happy. Lee Fields is reunited with Daptone Records co-founder and producer Gabriel Roth and this is the title track from his forthcoming album being released on October 28th.

Written by Henry Glover and a #1 R&B Atlantic single in 1956. Aretha Franklin recorded a version of this, as well, in 1967. The Raelettes join in on this one at the end to help bring it home.

Taken off this fine new 2-LP compilation. This Jimmy Cliff cover was originally released on the Tangerine label in 1973 and was produced by Ray Charles.

Written by Jimmy Cliff and originally recorded by Desmond Dekker. From the sublime reggae soundtrack for the film in which Jimmy Cliff comes from the hillsides of Jamaica to seek music fame and fortune only to be hindered by a corrupt music industry. Note to self: I haven't seen this in the last couple decades. I need to rewatch it.

This album features the inspired pairing of Toots Hibbert singing with the Jamaican rhythm section of Shakespeare & Dunbar and Memphis session musician greats such as Eddie Hinton, Tennie Hodges, Andrew Love, and Jim Dickinson. This version of the Ann Peebles hit "I Can't Stand the Rain" written by Don Bryant, Bernard Miller, and Ann Peebles has been lyrically reworked, hence, the different song title.

You guessed it...another version of "Summertime." I'm playing a different version of the standard written by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward on every summer episode of M2M. Not too many weeks left. I've never played this version before. Recorded in 1964. Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Produced by Nesuhi Ertegun.

Soul-jazz version of the traditional song recorded for Vee-Jay in 1963. Incredible vocal on this.

Recorded in Chicago in 1958 and featuring musical backing by Ike Turner (piano and guitar), Willie Dixon (bass), and Odie Payne (drums). Written by L.P. Weaver.

New single by the Nashville-based gospel group. This traditional gospel song features the lead vocals of their brother, Allen McCrary, and these are some of the last recordings which feature vocals by Deborah McCrary who passed away in June.

The Dedicated Men of Zion are based out of Greenville, NC and this album is made up of traditional gospel songs.. The vocal quartet (Anthony Daniels, Antwan Daniels, Marcus Sugg, and Dexter Weaver ) is backed by The Sacred Soul Sound Section (Will Sexton – Guitar, Matt Ross-Spang – Guitar, Mark Edgar Stuart – Bass, George Sluppick – Drums and Percussion, and Al Gamble – Organ. One of my favorite albums of 2022.

This new album is the fourth and final one of the I Am the Moon album series. Susan Tedeschi turns in a wonderful lead vocal - not an uncommon occurrence for her - on this lead off track punctuated by rousing backing vocals.

2021 single by the Seattle funk and soul trio and the first tune recorded with drummer Dan Weiss. Editor's note: He's no longer the drummer for the band. Still, you get to hear Delvon Lamarr on Hammond B-3 and Jimmy James on guitar do their thing. Recorded at the Colemine Records headquarters in Loveland, OH. Dean Wareham pretty much sticks to the "Oh Mercy" blueprint of the Bob Dylan song. It works for me.

Written by Jack Nitzsche and Willy DeVille and produced and arranged by Jack Nitzsche. Still wonderful after all these years. Found on their sophomore release.

From the New Zealand band's forthcoming album being released on September 16. Elizabeth Stokes on lead vocals. They put on a wonderful show at Blueberry Hill a couple of weeks ago.

Dylan Hicks is a songwriter, novelist, and pianist out of Minneapolis. Horns and cello weave in and out of some the best lyrics you'll hear this year. "Reduce me to ashes with a cold-hearted glance / Spur on your steed, sharpen your lance / See that my grave is unmarked and unkempt / Remind my survivors of your boundless contempt / Don’t trust in fate, leave nothing to chance / Reduce me to ashes with a cold-hearted glance." This one won't garner a lot of play at weddings.

This was my favorite album that I heard in 2006 and nothing has happened to change that opinion. Written by Neko Case and featuring harmony vocals by Kelly Hogan. Rounding out the musical backing on this are Joey Burns (cello, acoustic guitar) and John Convertino (drums) of Calexico, Garth Hudson (piano, keyboards), Tom Ray (upright bass), Paul Rigby (electric guitar), and Anna DeWolf (violin).

Music bed. Willy Vlautin's most recent novel is called "The Night Always Comes." This CD by his band, The Delines, is meant to accompany the book and it is made up mostly of instrumentals (including this one).

This Lucinda Williams cover is the B-side of a forthcoming single by the Australian band being released tomorrow (Friday, 9/9). Both songs are sung by bassist Bella Quinlan instead of the primary lead vocalist, Sam Nicholson.

Written by Lucinda Williams. She had one of the best bands going at this time - Gurf Morlix on a multitude of different instruments and backing vocals, Duane Jarvis on electric guitar, Dr. John Ciambotti on bass, and Don "The Clock" Lindley on drums.

Written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by the New Orleans singer in 1966.

From their release of live acoustic versions of Bottle Rockets songs recorded at the now-defunct Lucas House in St. Louis. Written by Brian Henneman. This song works particularly well in an acoustic setting.

This version of the John Hiatt song was never released. If the voice sounds familiar, that's Cheryl Stryker from One Fell Swoop - a St. Louis band in the mid-nineties. The Borrowers were a band she was in when living in Los Angeles. The band was also comprised of Mark Addison who has been recording and producing lots of records in Austin and Shawn Lee who is now based in London and quite famous for his TV and film scores and for his Ping Pong Orchestra band and his many collaborations with other artists.

From their debut full-length album and credited to Jay Farrar, Mike Heidorn, and Jeff Tweedy who comprised the band at that time. Lead vocals by Jay Farrar. The Legendary Rich Gilbert also added pedal steel.

Gram Parsons-influenced track from the late, great band out of Washington, MO. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Lou Whitney and featuring Joe Terry on piano. Jeff Swift and Jenny Stuckenschneider (now Jenny Swift) on vocals and John Horton on electric guitar, Greg Lamb on bass, Sean Anglin on drums, and Mary Dee Brown on fiddle.
