Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hip Hug-Her
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Hip Hug-Her
Live at the Fillmore, 1997 (Deluxe) Warner Records 2022

Happy New Year, everybody! A huge amount of thanks and gratitude go out to Allen Dahm of the late, great Bittersweet Melody show and Rob Levy of Juxtaposition (Wednesday 7-9 pm) for doing really fine editions of M2M while I was away "on assignment." Consider this my recap of some of my favorite things I heard in 2022. Suffice it to say that I'm barely scratching the surface here and my only real criteria is that I believe I'll still be happy hearing any of these songs ten years from now. It's my non-slave to the buzz show. - This previously unreleased live version of a Booker T. & the MGs composition by Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Booker T. Jones, and Al Jackson, Jr. was recorded in 1997 and came out on this new release in 2022. Highly recommended. You want a clear idea of the artists who really influenced Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers? Get this set!

7:02 AM
Lee Fields - Two Jobs
Lee Fields Two Jobs
Sentimental Fool Daptone Records 2022

Daptone Records took a huge hit over recent years with the loss of Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Naomi Shelton, and Cliff Driver. Lee Fields returned to the Daptone fold and released this album of good to really good soul songs elevated by one of the finest soul vocalists going.

7:05 AM
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - Pull Your Pants Up
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio Pull Your Pants Up
Cold As Weiss Colemine Records 2022

The soul and funk trio out of Seattle released another album of Hammond organ-driven instrumentals in 2022. I really like their albums and they're even better live.

7:10 AM
Dr. John - End of the Line
Dr. John End of the Line
Things Happen That Way Rounder 2022

This is Dr. John's final album and was recorded the year he died in 2019 and released posthumously in 2022. Aaron Neville and Katie Pruitt sing some of the verses of this Traveling Wilburys song. You can hear his voice and phrasing remained strong to the very end.

7:14 AM
Roland Johnson - The Dark End of the Street
Roland Johnson The Dark End of the Street L
The Dark End of the Street - single Blue Lotus 2022

I can't do a 2022 recap and not mention the passing of Roland Johnson. The St. Louis music scene took a huge hit with his passing. He released this stirring version of the soul classic written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman soul classic as a single in 2022. Backing vocals by Emily Wallace and the River Kittens. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Paul Niehaus IV.

This track is soulful gospel at its finest. Highly recommended.

Adia Victoria Ain't Killed Me Yet
Ain’t Killed Me Yet - Single Atlantic Records 2022

This single from the Nashville singer-songwriter was her only release (that I know of) in 2022 and it grooves, mightily.

David Ruffin - My Girl
David Ruffin My Girl
Summer Of Soul (...Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] [Live at the Harlem Cultural Festival, 1969] Sony 2022

One of the most significant music and film offerings of 2022 was this finally released film and soundtrack of performances from the Harlem Cultural Festival which took place in 1969. More than just a film of amazing live performances, it also captured the sociopolitical climate at the time. Written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White. Thrill to the falsetto and performance of one of soul music's greatest singers.

The Rolling Stones Fool To Cry (Live At The El Mocambo 1977)
Live At The El Mocambo Polydor Records 2022

They were billed as the Cockroaches when they played these two secret shows at the 300-seat El Mocambo club in Toronto on March 4-5, 1977. These shows have been bootlegged but 2022 marked the first time they've been officially released with far superior sound. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts were joined by Ian Stewart (piano), Billy Preston (keyboards), and Ollie Brown (percussion) for these shows. Highly recommended!

The Heavy Heavy Sleeping On Grassy Ground
Life and Life Only ATO Records 2022

This band from Brighton, England was so impressive when they played at the Roots N Blues festival in Columbia, MO in October. This 6-song EP with all the right 60s influences has garnered a lot of KDHX airplay. Fronted by vocalists Will Turner and Georgie Fuller but their live shows feature plenty of full-band harmonies.

8:07 AM
Elvis Costello & The Imposters - Magnificent Hurt
Elvis Costello & The Imposters Magnificent Hurt

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers did a run of twenty dates at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1997. Six of the shows were professionally recorded and are being released for the first time in November of 2022. These songs were made available in various formats and sizes and include "re-arranged and distinctive versions of their hits, deep cuts, and many cover versions—paying tribute to the artists that Tom and the band had been influenced by." Benmont Tench gets to go nuts on piano on this terrific version of a J.J. Cale song.

Phoebe Bridgers Sidelines
Sidelines - Single Dead Oceans 2022

Phoebe Bridgers only released two singles in 2022. This original song and a sublime cover of The Handsome Family's "Too Much Wine." 8:27 AM
Weyes Blood - Grapevine
Weyes Blood Grapevine
And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow Sub Pop Records 2022

I haven't delved into this album, yet. I have no excuse. This song, however, is good as any song I heard in 2022. Written and sung by the immensely talented Natalie Mering. Beautifully arranged, as well. "California's my body / And your fire runs over me / My car broke down / In an old ghost town right around / Where they got James Dean / Emotional cowboy / With no hat and no boots / He stayed up all night / Trying to beat up the moon."

John Moreland - Claim Your Prize
John Moreland Claim Your Prize
Birds in the Ceiling Old Omens 2022

"All the low down summer, there was nothin' there to lift you / You couldn't see just how much pain there was to sift through / And I stopped askin' how bad the world is broken / 'Cause no one's circumstances are ever really chosen / I guess it's a comfort, livin' your delusion / It makes me sad to see the kind of drugs you're using /The fear and anger, waves and waves of grief / I don't know how you missed it, your hero is a thief

Wakin' up again when I can't find a reason / I told you the truth, and you told me it was treason / I'm thinkin' back on all your pretty petals / Before you felt there was this score you had to settle / I wasn't sleepin', the moon was high this mornin' / When your certain kind of sorrow came and touched me without warning / And the lies you tell yourself to try and feel okay / Well they all come at a price that somebody has to pay / So come on down and claim your prize / It's nothin' like they advertise /No one makes it out alive"
