Songwriters Showcase features some of the best new music in the folk and country traditions, ranging from sensitive singer-songwriters to crunching alt-country. You'll hear about people who will be appearing soon in the area, and get a sampling of in-studio performances too. Songwriters Showcase was founded in 1987 by Larry Weir.

Ride Me Back Home Legacy Recordings 2019
A set of Guy Clark covers in this set, including one from the latest release of the one and only Willie Nelson. Willie also covers Guy's "My Favorite Picture of You" on the new release.
Steve Earle and the Dukes Texas 1947 N
Guy New West 2019
Steve Earle's new release features all songs written by Guy Clark.
Terry Allen Old Friends
This One's for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark Music Road Records 2011
Terry Allen and Guy Clark became fast friends in the 1980s. I'm not sure if it's finished yet but Terry, a renowned artist, was going to fashion a sculpture remembering Guy, and including some of Guy's cremains in it.
John Hartford Self Made Man N
Backroads, Rivers & Memories: The Rare & Unreleased John Hartford Real Gone Music 2019
An early example of Hartford's brilliant songwriting. Going out to all those deluded self-made men.
Eric Brace, Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz Hartford's Bend
Profiles in Courage, Frailty, And Discomfort Red Beet Records 2017
A beautiful tribute song to John Hartford. The latest album from these guys features songs related to rivers.
Randy Newman Louisiana 1927
The Best of Randy Newman Warner 2001
The waters have begun to recede but rain is still almost a daily occurrence and it's going to take months for people to try to put their lives back together. This song is about another great flood along the Mississippi.
Ian Tyson M.C. Horses
All the Good 'uns Vanguard Records 1996
Originally recorded in 1994, it is part of the first of two volumes of some of the best from the great Ian Tyson.
David Bromberg Spanish Johnny
My Own House / You Should See the Rest of the Band Fantasy 1999
From 1979, "My Own House" is a fabulous example of Bromberg's acoustic talent across genres. Songwriter Paul Siebel wrote the melody to this one and added lyrics to those already written by Willa Cather.
Wil Maring Keeper of the Farm
The Calling Roan Pony Records 2006
A set of music from some Illinois singer/songwriters. Wil lives near Cobden, IL and has been writing and playing great songs for many years. Sending this one out to my cousin, Mike, who is a fan of Wil's music.
The Roscoe Beano Band Winfield Lullaby L
Time Traveler The Roscoe Beano Band 2007
This song was co-written by Roscoe and members of the Toler family, Dave, Virgie and Ann at least. It won an award some years back at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS.
Mike Zanger Lonesome and Blue L
Vanity Press self 2013
Mike is a wickedly funny songwriter who hails from Edwardsville and hosts Log House Concerts, a series which spotlights great guitarists. As we speak Mike is on his way to Richard Smith's Tunesmith Studio in Nashville to record his second cd of original songs. Dustin Greer and Cecil Tinnon are traveling with Mike and musical genius Rory Hoffman is supposed to lend his talent to the project.
Adam Carroll This Old Garage N
I Walked in Them Shoes Gypsy Shuffler Records 2019
From Adam's latest release, produced by Lloyd Maines. Adam and his wife, Chris, are center stage at the Focal Point this Thursday, June 27th for a 7:30 show in this month's offering of Songbird Cafe. Tickets are still available.
Greg Brown Laughing River
If I Had Known: Essential Recordings 1980-1996 Red House Records 2003
Originally recorded in 1992. One of my favorite Greg Brown songs. It may be boys playing a boy's game but life in the bush leagues can be demoralizing. Gotta have a baseball song on Songwriters Showcase.
Jim Wurster Dade County Jail
Everybody's Talkin': A Tribute to Fred Neil Y & T Music 2018
This tribute to legendary songwriter Fred Neil came out in 2018.
David Rodriguez The True Cross
The True Cross DejaDsic 1992
A classic song which I first heard on Songwriter's Showcase. Originally released as a 15-song cassette in 1990 titled "Man Against Beast" and this reissue adds the classic Woody Guthrie song "Deportee" with Lucinda Williams. David Rodriguez emigrated to the Netherlands in 1994, remaining there until his death in 2015. His daughter is musician Carrie Rodriguez.
Steve Young Montgomery in the Rain
No Place to Fall RCA 1978
Waylon Jennings recorded Steve Young's "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean" and once remarked that Steve had no idea how talented he was both as a songwriter and guitarist. Probably his best-known work is "Seven Bridges Road", which the Eagles made popular.
Iris DeMent Mornin' Glory
Sing the Delta Flariella Records 2011
Without a doubt Songwriters Showcase is where I first came across this woman, who was "too country for country."
Rodney Crowell Grandma Loved That Old Man
Tarpaper Sky New West Records 2014
One of my favorite singer/songwriters, I got the opportunity to host an instudio session with Rodney a few years back. A very gracious man whose handwritten lyrics of his classic "'Til I Can Gain Control Again" hang in our KDHX air room.
Rosanne Cash A Feather's Not a Bird
The River & the Thread Blue Note Records 2014
Rosanne and Rodney were spouses at one time. This is a wonderful release.
Hugh Moffatt and Katy Moffatt Dance Me Outside
Dance Me Outside Philo 1992
I'm certain I first heard this brother/sister pairing on Songwriters Showcase, as I did the song's co-writer along with Katy, Tom Russell.
Fred J. Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels Harold Wilson
From the Paradise Motel Barbe Wire 1994
Songwriters Showcase was quite likely responsible for Fred Eaglesmith making St. Louis a regular stop when he tours. An absolute classic.
Kate Wolf Eyes of a Painter
An Evening In Austin Rhino 1989
I believe Ed mentioned awhile back that there is previously unreleased Kate Wolf music out now. I need to get a copy of it.
Dave Alvin Dark Eyes
Public Domain: Songs From The Wild Land Hightone 2000
One song about eyes deserves another. The songs on this album were all P.D. Sure makes copyright issues easy.
