Greasy cool soul jazz out of Memphis, Tennessee, featuring guitarist Joe Restivo.

Kansas City knows BBQ... and they know greasy soul jazz. I need to get over there and catch these cats live and in person.

This guys's a monster performer, and very smart, as he recruited St. Louis to New Orleans transplant Charlie Halloran for trombone duties on the album.

The great Michael Mann (Hollywood Fats) and band recorded live - cuts from the years 1979 to 1980.

Hummel working a Jimmy Reed vibe. This is an album of covers, but done in a way that you almost don't notice. This is a good album.

The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection. The cut is from 1963, composed by Willie Dixon, Matt Guitar Murphy bending the strings.

Recorded in 1968, from the "Life" album.

The great Billy Preston, who came up in the Gospel world as a child prodigy, recording a lot of gospel material for Chicago's Chess Records back in the 1960s.

This cut features Naomi Davis on vocals. Now, she might not have wanted folks to know that she was moonlighting, as this is Naomi Shelton, hard core gospel singer from the Daptone label (that came about a few years after these sessions).

A great groove band out of Austin, TX, featuring Patrick Benfield on organs, Landis Armstrong on guitars, Chris Johnson on bass, Eric C. Hughes on drums.

Soulard's very first album, with Rondo and Ribtip holding up the road sign, and Artie a head taller than everyone.

This cat, out of Chicago, is one of today's truly tough harp players and songwriters, and a heckuva a singer, too.

Fowler is a touring percussionist with the Rolling Stones, and the version of these songs began while horsing around during sound checks. I believe it's pretty cool stuff.

Brand new Delbert, with an album that is exceptionally strong. This one's gonna have legs.

Desert legend Sean Wheeler, captured in magnificent fashion by Kid Andersen. This is one of Wheeler's own compositions (along with Troy Van Leeuwen).

I think this is a very cool and extremely respectful version of this Bob Dylan tune. Actually, this entire album - almost completely overlooked - is excellent.

A road-dog, roadhouse artist if there ever was one, who truly shines during live performance. This cat is great, and one of the good guys.

Folks, I dig this band so much. The harmonies...the harmonies!!!

A cool project, all recorded live, over just a couple sessions. This one features the great St. Louis singing bassist Eugene Johnson.

This album, which went totally under that radar last year, is chock full of groovy goodness. Whew - it's drippin' groovy goodness!

This cat, Harmonica Shah, IS the real deal. Detroit blues in yo' face. I love this guy's music!

Brazil's Igor Prado with his new project, Justgroove.

This album is THE place to begin your T-Bone Walker collection, then work backward. Mean Old World was recorded in 1956, in L.A., by Atlantic's Nesuhi Ertegun.

A great 2 cd set featuring fantastic tracks recorded in 1969 and 1970.

Released by Stax but recorded at Willie Mitchell's Hi Records' studios because Stax knew Mitchell was perfect for capturing McCracklin's soul/blues sound. And they were right - originally released as the Yesterday Is Gone LP.

Only 20 years old and already a powerful performer and composer. It's going to be so enjoyable watching this young man do his own thing.

Composed by the wonderful soul team of Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke (out of Miami). Sadly, this was Burks' finest album and also his last. St. Louis was a 2nd home to Michael Burks, and I miss him.
