My post-Thanksgiving show - all the musicians I am most thankful for, who have entered my life this year. We start with Bruce Molsky, who came with his group to the Focal Point a few weeks ago.

One of the members of Mozaik is Nikolai Parov, born in Bulgaria, moved to Budapest where he established the Balkan music scene and his own group "Zsarátnok". This piece takes a well-known Bulgarian Daichovo tune by Boris Karlov, played in a dreamy way, then adds to it, eventually playing it all at dance speed. Then he turns the Bulgarian 9/8 into a slip-jig 9/8.

this song is in fast "Pirin 7/8", divided 3+2+2. The dance was taught here in St. Louis this fall

This and the previous are both in 7/8 divided 3+2+2, but this is slower, and the dance comes from farther north

This style is sometimes called "laika". Pieces are still being composed in this style. The dance is a Sytaki or slow hasapikos
