The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band - Raise a Little Hell
The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band Raise a Little Hell
So Delicious Shanachie Entertainment 2015
Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band has built its reputation the long, slow, hard way. After 12 years of playing as many as 300 shows each year, Rev. Peyton, the world’s foremost country blues finger-style picker, along with the biggest little band in the country has pieced together one of the most dedicated followings out there. This following is sure to eat up the band’s latest offering, Poor Until Payday, (the second on their own Family Owned Records label through hip Nashville indie Thirty Tigers) out October 5th, a country blues record that was made the right way — two feet on the ground and both hands getting dirty. bigdamnband.com

Whitewater Ramble - Fare Thee Ever Well
Whitewater Ramble Fare Thee Ever Well
Pseudonymous Whitewater Ramble 2020
The Colorado collective lead by Patrick Sites has come to be well-known for their exciting award-winning videos, and “Fare The Ever Well” does not disappoint. Musically speaking, “Fare Thee Ever Well” creates a sonic reminder and homage to the Italian Western movie composers of the 1960s. Memorable melodies and rich harmonies back the story telling vibe in which the lyrics paint scenarios of civic, social and political injustice and corruption. Pseudonymous marks WhiteWater Ramble’s third studio release in its 15-year history, and seven years since the release of their acclaimed 2013 album Roots & Groove. The band’s newest release features 14 original cuts that offer up special guest appearances by Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters on Banjo, Joey Porter of The Motet on clavinet, and the vocal chops of Jessica Jones, Adam Lufkin and The Black Swan Singers lead by Sheryl Renee of The Contribution. www.WhiteWaterRamble.com

Karen Jonas - Pink Leather Boots
Karen Jonas Pink Leather Boots
The Southwest Sky and Other Dreams Yellow Brick Road 2020
I first played this one a couple weeks ago. Karen Jonas’ fifth album The Southwest Sky and Other Dreams is a flashback-fueled fever dream of Americana songcraft and storytelling. Taking the vast desert expanses of the American Southwest as her backdrop, Jonas embroiders small-town snapshots into vivid explorations of our inner struggle between ambition and inaction. The Virginia singer-songwriter’s most accomplished and evocative expression to date, The Southwest Sky and Other Dreams captures that aching space between romantic dream-state and numb reality like few before. “Vocals that twist and snap with tension and emotional depth.” – Country Music People, U.K.

The Lucky Losers What Makes You Act Like That
Godless Land VizzTone 2020
Winner of the Independent Blues Award for “Best Blues-Soul Artist of 2019,” The Lucky Losers’ music is a throwback to the hybrid of soul, blues, rock, gospel and country that emerged in the late 1960’s with impassioned vocals, electrifying vocal interplay, and some powerful harmonica. Described as “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S.,” (Real Blues, 2010), fiery Dallas-born entertainer Cathy Lemons has a velvet voice with a gritty edge and the rebel conviction of a woman risen from the ashes. New Jersey native Phil Berkowitz "has earned renown as one of the West Coast’s most distinctive harp players, as well as for his sharp, resonant tenor," (Living Blues. 2018). Based in San Francisco and accompanied by a dynamic four-piece ensemble, The Lucky Losers have been nominated for a total of 15 awards since 2015. They have travelled to 33 states in the U.S. and have completed eight national tours.

JW-Jones Bye Bye Love
Sonic Departures Solid Blues Records 2020
JW-Jones likes to change things up for his albums and after an excellent live album with just his road band we get a big band album with no less than thirteen horns! He describes this as his self-isolation project but he was able to assemble the whole band for much of the recording. With some of the songs drawn from his back catalogue and some songs you will recognize, you’ll be impressed with these fresh arrangements and JW-Jones’ imaginative guitar solos. He is also no slouch as a big band vocalist. Toronto Blues Society

Magic Sam - All of Your Love
Magic Sam All of Your Love
West Side Soul Delmark 1967
Samuel Gene Maghett (February 14, 1937 – December 1, 1969), known as Magic Sam, was an American Chicago blues musician. He was born in Grenada County, Mississippi, and learned to play the blues from listening to records by Muddy Waters and Little Walter.[ After moving to Chicago at the age of 19, he was signed by Cobra Records and became well known as a bluesman after the release of his first record, "All Your Love", in 1957. He was known for his distinctive tremolo guitar playing. The stage name Magic Sam was devised by Sam's bass player and childhood friend Mack Thompson at Sam's first recording session for Cobra, as an approximation of "Maghett Sam". The name Sam was using at the time, Good Rocking Sam, was already being used by another artist. Wiki

First Aid Kit On the Road Again
On the Road Again - Single Jagadamba AB 2020
“We’re excited to release our version of “On The Road Again” by Willie Nelson. We recorded this cover a couple of years ago and recently found it while digging through the archives. The song is a country classic, it feels like we’ve known it forever. Because of the situation with COVID, sadly, the theme of the song has never felt more relevant than it does today. Proceeds from track sales will go to Crew Nation, which helps the countless tour and venue crew members who can’t work right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “So much of the magic happens behind the stage,” First Aid Kit said in a statement. “It’s easily taken for granted, but without our touring and venue crew live music wouldn’t be possible. It’s important that we help them out right now.

"I kept hearing people say that. On the radio or on TV, or just personally. You know 'times like these' and 'these challenging times.' And I thought, there's something there that I can very simply get back to - what do we need?" Stephen Clair - Fixing to Fly
Stephen Clair Fixing to Fly
The Small Hours Rock City RC 2020 2020
Hot on the heels of last year's Malcolm Burn-produced Strange Perfume, Stephen Clair and his trio arrive just in time to reignite your summer on September 18 with the brand new 11-song THE SMALL HOURS. Recorded at the beginning of 2020 in upstate NY, a minute before all hell broke loose, this is the Stephen Clair album we've been waiting for. It perfectly displays the power of his songs and his solid-yet-dangerous trio. It's spare, taut, fully-realized, and elevated by the muscle of his well-suited comrades, Daria Grace on bass, and Aaron Latos on drums. Clair wields a telecaster throughout. You know that glorious Fender sound when things are turned up loud but played (sometimes) delicately. It’s nothing but a trio record. But what chops. All so clean and so present.

When we think of the state of it, have we upheld the promise to love and nurture it? What is it that’s going to carry us through this time of isolation?…What are you going to do with now?!? Johnny Iguana's Chicago Spectacular! Delmark Records 2020
Hot new blues project by Johnny Iguana of The Claudettes. This is a blues album from top to bottom. It is traditional. It is contemporary and audacious. It is the story of Johnny Iguana, a one-of-a-kind piano man exalting his Chicago blues heroes while making his own mark. In the bigger picture, it’s compelling evidence that blues today is vital, and still evolving.

Imelda May - Wild Woman
Imelda May Wild Woman
Tribal Decca (UMO) 2014
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Imelda May is a unique vocal talent, one whose gift lies outside the normal order of pop culture time and trends. Inspired by vocal jazz à la Billie Holiday and the sound and look of rockabilly, May began performing with the swing outfit Blue Harlem, and released a handful of independent CDs before scoring attention in 2007 with her nomination for an award as Best Burlesque Singer as well as the release of her more official debut, Love Tattoo. The album featured her strong backing band including her husband, guitarist/co-songwriter Darrel Higham, along with trumpeter/multi-instrumentalist Dave Priseman, bassist Al Gare, and drummer Steve Rushton. Critically and commercially well-received, it garnered May some high-profile live gigs, including hitting the road with Jools Holland. It was released in the U.S. by Decca in 2009, followed by two singles, and scored a mid-level success all music.com.

Slim Dunlap - From the Git Go
Slim Dunlap From the Git Go
The Old New Me Medium Cool Records 1993
Bob "Slim" Dunlap's good-humored grace did much to win over die-hard Replacements fans embittered by the forced exit of his predecessor, the late Bob Stinson. These qualities are obvious on Dunlap's solo debut, which downplays the urge to convert for a relaxed approach: the hooks are obvious, but never hammered into the ground. "Rockin' Here Tonight" opens the album with a fine shower of jangly distortion, delivering just what its title promises. "Just for the Hell of It" is punchy, good-time bar band rock -- with nonsense rhymes to match -- while "Partners in Crime" comes off like late-'70s Rolling Stones, updated with a darker theme ("We're on a fast cruise headed for the bottom, but we're having one hell of a time") all music.com
