Jolie Holland - Waiting for the Sun
Jolie Holland Waiting for the Sun
Wine Dark Sea Anti/Epitaph 2014
Singer and songwriter Jolie Holland has immersed herself in the love of the various American musics since the very beginning of her career. From country and folk to blues, gospel, jazz, and 19th century parlor songs, she has always translated these forms with uncommon depth and understanding in her uniquely revealing songs. That said, Wine Dark Sea is somewhat of a departure. Her players -- two drummers, three additional guitarists (all of whom often play simultaneously), and reeds, winds, and bass -- come from the more experimental side of New York's music scene.

Randall Bramlett Rocket To Nowhere
Pine Needle Fire New West Records 2020
Randall Bramblett’s latest record Pine Needle Fire is set for release on November 13th New West Records will issue the 12-song album, which is Bramblett’s follow-up to 2017’s highly regarded Juke Joint At The Edge Of The World. Bramblett who has worked with Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt and many others over the course of his career notes that Pine Needle Fire is “about time passing, or at least grappling with the realization that you don’t have an infinite amount of time left like you think you do when you’re young. So there’s the mortality part of it. And then another part has to do with our current situation in this country. I grew up protesting in the ‘60s and ‘70s, so I’ve always felt connected to politics. Now I’m really hung up on it.

The Wood Brothers - Ophelia
The Wood Brothers Ophelia
Live at the Barn Honey Jar Records 2016
A roots music trio featuring brothers Chris (upright bass, vocals) and Oliver Wood (guitars, vocals) along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, the Wood Brothers bring a distinctive flair to their union of folk, blues, gospel, and jazz. Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Chris and Oliver were exposed to American roots music at a young age by their parents and eventually started their own individual music careers, with Chris finding widespread success in the '90s as one-third of the adventurous jazz trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood and Oliver fronting the Atlanta-based funky roots combo King Johnson.

Jimmy LaFave - Positively 4th Street
Jimmy LaFave Positively 4th Street
Trail Music Road Records 1998
Nice album by this Austin legend. Containing 31 previously unreleased tracks, this two-CD set highlights the past two decades of LaFave's growth both as a songwriter and as a prime interpreter of Dylan material. Here he tackles no less than a dozen of Dylan's classics, ranging from the opening "Positively 4th Street" to "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" to the quiet stillness of "If Not for You." Equally as satisfying are LaFave's own originals, with "Red Dirt Roads at Night," "Burden to Bear," "How It Must Remain," "Ellie's Song," "Loved You Like Rainbows" and "The Open Road" all being particularly compelling statements. The sound, taken from live performances and radio broadcasts from Texas and around the world, is rough and right, giving this an official bootleg kind of feel that fits the music nicely.

Beth Bombara - Revolution 1
Beth Bombara Revolution 1
Revolution 1 - Single Lemp Electric 2020
This re-imagined take on The Beatles White Album classic stays true to the original vibe while adding Bombara’s own sprinkling of personality. Hawaiian inspired slide guitar ushers the track into new rootsy territory, while reminding us that the song's topical relevancy carries over through today. "A friend asked me to take on this cover to raise funds for fellow struggling musicians during the COVID crisis. I jumped on board for the cause. While tracking vocals, I got caught up in the moment, improvising a speaking section at the end. I literally spat out the first thing that popped into my head. The raw authenticity really came through so we just left it as is- first take with zero editing.”

John Németh - Bars
John Németh Bars
Stronger Than Strong Memphis Grease Records 2020
Hardworking blues dynamo John Németh leads his band through a dirtied-up, retro session on his new album Stronger Than Strong. Released October 16th, 2020 on Nola Blue Records, it’s a rough-hewn live-in-the-studio effort that vibes like the group is coming straight off of the floorboards in an edge-of-town roadhouse that’s packed to the rafters. Németh is a prodigiously talented singer and harmonica player who has used his skills to build a large, international following over the last couple of decades. His soulful tenor voice and fierce harp work are present in full force on Stronger Than Strong and the two-time Blues Music Award (BMA) winner and multi-BMA nominee has never sounded better or more urgent." rockandbluesmuse.com

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges Texas Sun
Texas Sun - EP Dead Oceans 2020
"I had never felt this transported by a song, never felt such a powerful need to shoot anything before in my life,” says video director Philip Andelman. "We traveled out to East Texas and just started driving, creating our own set of adventures as we went along: meetings with pecan farmers in Van Horn, mezcal dealers in Marfa, ranchers in Valentine. We didn’t have much gear, just a camera, some incandescent bulbs, a tripod and ratchet straps. We fell into a family of friends in Marfa who took us over the finish line, rustling up wardrobes and cars, a neighbor with a home to shoot in, an ex-boyfriend with a drone. Calling this a labor of love would be an understatement, it was the ride of a lifetime."

Hayes Carll - Bad Liver and a Broken Heart
Hayes Carll Bad Liver and a Broken Heart
Trouble In Mind Lost Highway Records 2007
The Americana singer/songwriter rises from the Stephen King approved indie ranks to the major-label sweepstakes on his third release, and first for Lost Highway. It's a strong if characteristic collection of rugged country folk-rock sung with Hayes Carll's Texas drawl, that seems to be somewhat exaggerated so that we know he's from the land of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark, some obvious influences that snake through these 14 tracks. He's been there and done that, struggling through years of the hard living that informs tunes such as the humorous take on his trying times detailed in the self-explanatory "I Got a Gig" - allmusic.com

The Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin'
The Spencer Davis Group Gimme Some Lovin'
single Fontana 1966
A Welsh guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist, Spencer Davis became one of the elder statesmen of mid-'60s British rock. As part of the Spencer Davis Band, which formed in Birmingham in 1963, Davis scored chart-topping hits on both sides of the Atlantic, including "Keep on Running" and "Somebody Help Me" in the U.K. and a pair of Top Ten singles, "Gimme Good Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," in the United States. The band -- which also featured a teenaged Stevie Winwood on vocals, guitar, and organ, Muff Winwood (Stevie's brother) on bass, and Pete York on drums -- continued to mix commercial pop tunes and blues-inspired R&B until the Winwoods departed in 1967

Jorge Calderón On Mardi Gras Day
Blue Rhythm Highway 2020
"Blue Rhythm Highway is my first record in many years. At the urging of my long-time friend Jackson Browne, I went into his studio to record “Blue City” and “On Mardi Gras Day”. Then consequently many other songs to complete this CD. Painting the backdrop to my travels, “Sky Blue Chevrolet” opens the record and bookends with “Down By The Breadfruit Trees” which speaks to where I stand at this moment of the journey. In between, I share observations, dedications, plus a few raw tales and conversations along the blue rhythm highway." - Jorge Calderón

Garrett Dutton III (born October 3, 1972), better known as G. Love, is the front man for the band, G. Love & Special Sauce. Dutton, born in Philadelphia, began playing guitar at age 8. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the 9th grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as then-contemporary "old school" hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schooly D as influences.

Johnny Iguana Shake Your Moneymaker
Johnny Iguana's Chicago Spectacular! Delmark Records 2020
Johnny Iguana of The Claudettes. Growing up up in Philadelphia, Johnny Iguana really zeroed in on Junior Wells and Otis Spann after becoming obsessed with Chicago blues at age 15. In his later teens, armed with a fake ID and a sport coat, he played countless all-night blues gigs at Philly bars— largely songs plucked off Junior’s records. A few years later, Johnny met Junior at a NY show and was thrilled when Junior hired him after live auditions in Boston and Rhode Island. Johnny packed his bags and spent three years touring and recording with Junior. Decades later, Johnny still calls Chicago home and has emerged as one of the premier blues piano players in the United States. Since his days with Junior, he has toured or recorded with a who’s who of Chicago blues greats: Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Billy Boy Arnold, James Cotton, Lil’ Ed, Carey Bell, Eddy Clearwater, John Primer, Lurrie Bell, Billy Branch and more. He has learned from the best, a lifelong immersion and dedication.

Eaglesmith gradually became an underground favorite in his native Canada, thanks largely to a relentless touring schedule.

His attitude towards music is remarkable. His songwriting, along with his love of classic American music from the south, be it rockabilly, country or R&B, is one of the best kept secrets of the rock n roll underground." —Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather)

Radio Birdman - Hanging On
Radio Birdman Hanging On
The Essential Radio Birdman (1974-1978) Sub Pop Records 2001
Along with Brisbane's spectacular Saints, Sydney's smokin' Radio Birdman also predated the Sex Pistols and Ramones (and played for more hostile, unhappy audiences), and thus deserve the credit for co-founding the mid-to-late '70s punk rock explosion down under -- which was every bit as hot as the concurrent, more celebrated U.K. and U.S./Canada scenes. Primary songwriter and blistering lead guitarist Deniz Tek came from Ann Arbor, MI, where he had seen the Stooges and MC5 countless times. Tek made sure that members of departing Sydney band the Rats (who shared stages with his first Aussie band, TV Jones) became hip to his obscure heroes: Birdman was thus formed and early sets were all covers of the Stooges, MC5, and New York Dolls, as well as the Remains, Pink Faries, Jan & Dean, and John Lennon's "Cold Turkey." allmusic.com
