Duke Robillard - I Ain't Gonna Do It
Duke Robillard I Ain't Gonna Do It
Blues Bash! Stony Plain Records 2020
Duke Robillard has defined himself as not merely a great artist, but also a true historian, scholar and curator who is adept at electric and acoustic blues, jazz, jump, swing, ballads and standards. Grammy-nominated and a five-time winner of the Blues Award, over his 50 plus year career Duke has been a prolific songwriter and is considered a blues guitar master. Duke continues to be a sought after side-man and featured guest. Duke has admitted that his concept for this album was to make a straight vintage style blues album: danceable rhythms, no hook-laden songs... basically a blues party album. As always, the music is impeccable, classy and powerful.

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles - Get As Gone Can Get
Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles Get As Gone Can Get
Love's Middle Name Blue Corn Music 2018
— As rock phenoms go, Sarah Borges has never been easy to pin down. Since bursting onto the national scene in 2005 as the lead singer of the Broken Singles, she hasn’t allowed a speck of dust to settle on her sound or her story. Instead, the Massachusetts native has just kept on moving and shaking. “Critics have always loved Sarah, but that doesn’t mean they’ve figured out what to do with her,” says Binky, her longtime bassist and best friend of 15 years. He has a point. Conduct even a quick Google search, and you’ll find that she’s been dubbed everything — from an Americana darling to a roots rocker to a cowpunk to the next Sheryl Crow — by tastemakers as diverse as The New York Times and SiriusXM Outlaw Country Radio.

Larry Williams - Slow Down
Larry Williams Slow Down
single Specialty 1957
R'n'b/rock'n'roll singer-songwriter Williams didn't have a particularly long time in the spotlight -- he appeared in '57 and was effectively gone from the charts within three years -- but his small catalogue influenced a generation of British singers, among them John Lennon who was a huge fan. In fact the Beatles covered three Williams' songs in their early career -- Bad Boy, Dizzy Miss Lizzie and Slow Down -- and when Lennon had to turn in his rock'n'roll album he covered Williams' Bony Moronie . . . and he did Dizzy Miss Lizzie again with the Plastic Ono Band. The young Stones (and later solo McCartney) picked up on Williams' She Said Yeah, his Short Fat Fannie was a bandstand favourite of many in the British Beat Boom, and . . . and that was about Williams' hit catalogue right there.' elsewhere.co.nz

The Rolling Stones - The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man
The Rolling Stones The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man
Out of Our Heads ABKCO 1965
• This song is representative of music industry insiders who work on the business end - the guys who have nothing creative to offer, but deem themselves important to the process. With convoluted titles and bad toupees, these guys fostered a stereotype that the Rolling Stones played up in this song, describing a guy who thinks he is far more important than he actually is. • In the US, this was released as the B-side of "Satisfaction." • This was the last song credited to Nanker Phelge, a goofy name for a Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition. "Nanker" was a wacky face they would make to amuse each other, "Phelge" was a roommate of Keith Richards whom he considered "The most disgusting person ever." • The Stones recorded this at Chess studios in Chicago, where many American Blues legends recorded. songfests.com

Justin Townes Earle - South Georgia Sugar Babe
Justin Townes Earle South Georgia Sugar Babe
The Good Life Bloodshot Records 2008
For his full-length debut, Justin Townes Earle resists the temptation to ride the coattails of his two famous namesakes (his father, Steve Earle, and singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt) and instead lays bare a much broader set of influences. Anyone expecting the son of Steve Earle to be another gravel-voiced, rock-leaning, political shit-stirrer will be surprised by The Good Life, which owes as much to old-timey acoustic blues and country as it does to the singer-songwriter types who have had more obvious impact on the contemporary Americana scene.

Hot Lips Page - Last Call For Alcohol (10-29-52)
Hot Lips Page Last Call For Alcohol (10-29-52)
The Hot Lips Page Collection 1929-53 Acrobat
One of the great swing trumpeters in addition to being a talented blues vocalist, Hot Lips Page's premature passing left a large hole in the jazz world; virtually all musicians (no matter their style) loved him. Page gained early experience in the 1920s performing in Texas, playing in Ma Rainey's backup band. He was with Walter Page's Blue Devils during 1928-1931, and then joined Bennie Moten's band in Kansas City in time to take part in a brilliant 1932 recording session. Page freelanced in Kansas City and in 1936 was one of the stars in Count Basie's orchestra but, shortly before Basie was discovered, Joe Glaser signed Hot Lips as a solo artist. Although Page's big band did alright in the late '30s (recording for Victor), if he had come east with Basie he would have become much more

Delbert McClinton & Self-Made Men - Mr. Smith
Delbert McClinton & Self-Made Men Mr. Smith
Tall, Dark, and Handsome Hot Shot Records 2019
Rolling Stone calls him the “Godfather of Americana Music,” and rightfully so. Delbert’s musical style grew from his Texas roots. A little Tejano. A little Bob Wills. Throw in some Jimmy Reed harmonica. Add a splash of Big Joe Turner, and a big band horn section. He has also been nominated for Grammys in the Country category, and has been featured in media from the Los Angeles Times to the Washington Post. He has developed a sound that continues to serve him well, as evidenced by the three Grammy Awards for Contemporary Blues on his mantel. Born in Lubbock, raised in Fort Worth, and now with homes in Austin, Nashville, and San Miguel de Allende, Delbert recognizes that he has been One Of The Fortunate Few. He grew up with a backstage pass to some of the most significant moments in American culture and music history. Delbert.com
