Leslie Weinstein, 22 October 1945, Forest Hills, New York, USA. West, who from an early age suffered from a glandular disorder that affected his weight, began his rock ‘n’ roll career as a member of the Vagrants, a mid-60s hard rock grouping who released several singles to little commercial recognition. In 1969 he formed Mountain with bass player Felix Pappalardi. Together they would go on to create some of the most timeless power blues compositions of the period, notably ‘Mississippi Queen’, drawn from their first album, 1970’s Climbing!. Their third gig was in front of nearly half a million people at the previous year’s Woodstock Festival, and they went on to release three more albums (two of which went gold).

Still Climbing, also known as Still Climbing!, is the fifteenth studio album by American hard rock artist, Leslie West, released in 2013. Leslie West is a founding member of the band Mountain.The album featured performances by Johnny Lang, Dylan Rose, Dee Snider, Mark Tremonti, and Johnny Winter.

West, Bruce & Laing (WBL) were a blues rock power trio super-group formed in 1972 by Leslie West, Jack Bruce (bass, harp, keyboards and vocals; ex-Cream) and Corky Laing (drums and vocals; ex-Mountain). The band released two studio albums, Why Dontcha (1972) and Whatever Turns You On (1973),

“Left by the Roadside” gives us some gutsy vocals and nicely done acoustic resonator slide guitar as an intro before breaking into the big electric sound. West demonstrates the massive guitar sound he made famous in his Mountain Days on the solos here. “Give Me One Reason” gets a gritty makeover with West growling out the lyrics and playing a guitar lead and solos with real bite. He turns the Tracy Chapman from a somewhat sedate classic into a big rock song. “Here by the Party” is a typical 70’s rock anthem that West goes over the top in his exuberant way. “You Are My Sunshine” gets shifted to a minor key and the tempo gets slowed way down to turn it into a blues song. Interesting take with Peter Frampton sharing the guitar work as West takes the slide side. “Empty Promises/Nothin’Sacred” is something west calls his tribute to AC/DC. I think little else is needed here to describe that!

There’s the core of a good Mountain album here, but finding it requires sifting through the debris. “Spark” is pure pop rock, but its surging vitality is difficult to dislike. The album has some real clunkers in “She Loves Her Rock (And She Loves It Hard),” “I Love Young Girls,” and “Babe in the Woods” that wouldn’t have earned consideration from the band’s previous incarnations, but “Bardot Damage” and “Shimmy on the Footlights” are serviceable. The album’s real gem, tucked at the very end, is a short solo performance from West called “Little Bit of Insanity.” Later described as a tribute to Pappalardi, the intimacy of West’s beautifully lyrical electric guitar carries a gravitas that the rest of the album lacks.

There is no better example of Mountain at the height of its powers than this New Year's Eve concert at Fillmore East. The band was based out of Forest Hills so they were surrounded by friends, family, and an extremely enthusiastic audience.

Following the Happy New Year introduction, the recording begins with a powerful take on "Never In My Life," featuring Leslie West's massive guitar tone and the pummeling rhythm section of Pappalardi and Laing. They follow with a new song off Nantucket Sleighride called "Don't Look Around," which continues the intensity level. The hard rock crunch of "Mississippi Queen" is next and they have some fun with the arrangement, expanding the guitar solos and doubling the length of the album version.

The band took a break from touring in the spring of 1973 to record a second studio album, Whatever Turns You On, in London. The sessions became contentious – they became "really nasty because of the smack" according to the album's co-producer Andy Johns – with West and Laing electing to return home to New York before mixdown was complete. The album was released in July 1973, peaking at #87 on the Billboard chart. However, news of the band’s breakup would be publicly withheld until early 1974, with the band’s posthumous live album Live 'n' Kickin' released shortly thereafter.

WBL continued to tour North America and Europe extensively during late 1972 and early 1973 in support of Why Dontcha. However, the band's heavy drug use hurt their performances, and apparently at times even influenced their tour schedule. Corky Laing would later note: [It was] a very, very dark time. New York meant coke, England meant heroin, because that’s where the best quality was. I had this Hayman drumkit made that was going to be shipped back to the States. This heroin connection of Jack's said that her business connections would pay me $250,000 if they could ship heroin back in the drums. They were all metal so nobody would have noticed the extra weight

They added one-time Keef Hartley vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Miller Anderson on bass, and began touring as Mountain.The band soon secured a new recording deal with Scotti Bros. Records, but circumstances beyond their control forced Anderson to bow out before actual recording began. West and Laing quickly hired former Colosseum and Uriah Heep bassist/vocalist Mark Clarke. When asked how he joined the band, Clarke said West “just thought he could get me cheap and he did.”

In 2009 West and Laing teamed up with Jack Bruce's son, Malcolm Bruce, and toured as West, Bruce Jr. and Laing. This group was advertised by some venues as a reformation of West, Bruce & Laing, with Malcolm described as "filling in" for his father on the tour.

Leslie West died in 2020, leaving Corky Laing as WBL's only surviving member..

The abiding, resounding passion inside this band is never in question. Dive into their seemingly endless catalog of songs just about anywhere, and the heart and muscle pumping away inside every track are palpable and present in a most pleasing way.
