Stompin' Steve

As Stompin’ Steve Hathaway, he has hosted the weekly radio program, “The Cupertino Barndance,” since 1972 on KKUP 91.5 FM, Cupertino, California. The program features classic country music (50s and 60s honky tonk, western swing, bluegrass, rockabilly, and anything contemporary that fits). It airs 9 PM to Midnight, the 1st, 3rd, & 5th Sundays at 91.5 FM on the dial. The middle hour features a current release of either a new artist or reissue. He has also featured live in-studio performances by local and touring country and rockabilly bands.

Stompin’ Steve is an avid country music collector with an extensive library of books, records (all formats: 78’s, 45’s, LP’s, CD’s, 16 in. transcriptions), photographs, and 16mm films & videos of country and jazz music. He has contributed to the liner notes and/or photos of several record reissues on such labels as Old Timey, Rambler, Western, Rhino, Country Routes, Bear Family, and Franklin Mint. He has written notes for contemporary band releases on the Startone, On-The-Hill, and Rhythm Bomb labels. Clips from his film collection have been used in television documentaries on PBS and TNN. Clips of his Cindy Walker films were used during her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame on CBS. He also wrote short biographies of Billy Hughes, Smokey Rogers, Billy Jack Wills, and Luke Wills for The Encyclopedia of Country Music (Oxford University Press). He published the now defunct Western Swing Newsletter, an occasional aimed at record collectors and western swing music aficionados. Recently, he has co-wrote local San Jose country music legend Shorty Joe Quartuccio’s autobiography.
