Early on: Aretha Franklin's January 1972 live gospel recording from New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

Later on: Rutherford Chang's audio sculpture "The White Album". Chang, a Palo Alto native now a working artist in NYC, has collected almost 2000 numbered copies of The Beatles' iconic 1968 recording simply titled "The Beatles" but more commonly known as "The White Album". The records and their jackets, in varying degrees of decay, are the central artifacts in his 2013 gallery installation, "We Buy White Albums". In the recording we will hear, the artist has layered 100 unique individual copies of "The White Album", superimposing them into one "new" recording. In the beginning of each side the songs are perfectly registered and in sync, but as they play they slowly begin to un-sync. The resultant sound increasingly obscures the original song, eventually decomposing it to a point where it is barely recognizable noise, leaving an experience like a half-remembered dream.
