Speak Now -- Taylor Swift
Speak Now, Taylor Swift's third studio album, released in 2010. It was entirely written by Swift, with some of the songs written before her music debut. The album is now regarded as one of the โ50 best female albums of all timeโ by Rolling Stone in 2012. While still keeping some of the fairytale storytelling aspects of the predecessor album, Fearless, Speak Now evolves both lyrically and stylistically. The Great War -- Sabaton
"Our 9th studio album tells the story of The Great War, also known as the First World War. Four years of conflict that shook the world and took 4 empires with it to the grave, the consequences of which still echo to this day.
The contrast between the brutality of a merciless war, and the heroic sacrifices made by its soldiers is reflected in the songs on this album.
The idea for writing this album was born a long time ago, and the different stories we sing about were collected over several years of research, countless tours and with the help of our fantastic fans from around the world.
โThe Great Warโ takes us back one hundred years, to what was going to be the War to End all Wars.
Today we know better." (Source for this explanation, as well as Sabton's full explanation of this album and their others)

We Don't Need to Whisper by Angels & Airwaves
Recorded in our very own backyard at Neverpants Ranch in San Diego, "We Don't Need to Whisper" was a powerhouse debut for Angels & Airwaves. Tackling concepts of a utopian future, space travel, love, war, and gods, this 2006 rock album is a compelling and dynamic tour de force. Tom DeLonge's vision of Angels & Airwaves is beautifully demonstrated in this debut album that would take the band to the stars.

American Idiot -- Green Day
Green Day's powerhouse of an album was released in 2004 as the band's 7th studio. American Idiot follows three kids from Jingletown, USA: Johnny, Will and Tunny.
Johnny, self proclaimed "Jesus of Suburbia", attempts to simply get out of his hometown and American Idiot chronicles his struggle with addiction and loneliness. Will, who had planned to leave Jingletown is informed at the last moment that his girlfriend, Heather, is pregnant, distraught and overwhelmed, he stays in Jingletown. Green Day explores his story as he struggles with his relationship with his girlfriend, his child, and himself. Finally, Tunny manages to leave with Johnny, and the two quickly realize they had very little plan after "get out of town" and he soon joins the military to find purpose.
Green Day's album had several billboard hits, however the rock opera's over arching story is something to be examined and appreciated for the intricacies and nuanced approach to very real, and very serious issues. While this show will not be including all of the songs later used in the broadway adaptation of the album, the story is still a compelling examination of a generation.

The Silver Scream
Ice Nine Kills' fifth studio album, The Silver Scream, takes its inspiration from classic, cult, and slasher horror flicks. Each song takes inspiration from both horror movie plots as well as musical motifs from horror movie scores. The Silver Scream is not only an album, but a short horror film of its own told using 6 of the album's music videos (Which can be found here along with lyric videos for the extended version of the album). Ice Nine Kills uses their intense style of melodic and post hardcore along with a blend of symphonic and heavy metal to truly capture the stories told in the individual songs and in the over arching plot of the album. For a look at things that go bump in the night (and might be even scarier than your midterms!) tune in on Tuesday, October 27th at 2:00pm PST to listen to The Silver Scream.

Permanent Revolution -- Catch 22
Permanent Revolution was Catch-22's fourth studio album released in 2006. The album chronicles the life and theologies of Leon Trotsky. By utilizing their ska-punk brass-driven to chronicle the life Trotsky, the father of Marxist theory as we think of it today, leader of the Bolshevik revolution, a prominent figure in the October Revolution as well as being a primary player in the Brest-Litovsk negotiations between Germany and Russia, to pull out of WWI. Pat Kays, bassist for Catch-22, explained part of the concept behind the album was how the band thought "Trotsky is an intriguing character who we felt we could relate to in a lot of ways. And he has a very powerful story that is important and very relevant to our current world situation. That's why this record came about. We really wanted to make something meaningful..."
The album takes it name from Trosky's theory of the same name: Permanent Revolution. Catch-22 also asks listeners to ask ourselves "what is there to learn about history? What should we continue to build on, what should we never allow to happen again, and what needs to be improved?"
