I heard the U2 song "One" the other day for the first time in forever. I can barely listen to them anymore. But I heard that line in there "you gave me nothing, now it's all I got" and it made me remember, "oh, yeah, they used to be a great band."

I used to hate U2 back in the '80s, but now I love all their material up through The Joshua Tree album, and their All That You Can't Leave Behind album. Everything else they do is kind of questionable for me.

I love the early stuff and about 3/4 of Joshua Tree. But Achtung Baby is my record.

Edge's guitar playing on that record is superb, and Brian Eno really brought out the texture in the tunes.

My record by them is The Unforgettable Fire.

That's a great one too.

My first job was at comic store, and there was very little music everyone could agree on that was suitable to play during store hours. So we listened to a whole lot of U2. And R.E.M.

Yeah, Brian Eno is a studio whiz!

But once the store closed, it was GWAR, Pantera, and Body Count. Non-stop. And louder than you can imagine.

Awesome! I haven't played them forever. I always forget how cool and unusual their first couple records are.

I once had a job where the shift started at 4am. I burned a whole bunch of CDs so we all could listen to while working. They were mostly classic rock, since that's what most everyone could agree on, especially the bosses. On one of the discs, I slipped in "Seasons in the Abyss" by Slayer. One of my co-workers was shocked when I burned it on there. He said "I knew you said you were going to do it, but I didn't actually think you'd go through with it!" He was a HUGE metal fan!

When they were playing Lollapalooza, it was at the height of the controversy.

I Remember It Was Mentioned On An Episode Of VH1's Behind The Music.

So they get to Arizona, and the local police force joins forces with the venue security.

Oh.

They say they will not provide security or any sort of emergency response for the show unless Ice-T signs a contract promising the band will not perform the song "Copkiller."

Without security, the whole show would have to be canceled. So, Ice-T does what the promoters ask: he signs a contract promising that Body Count will not play "Copkiller."

Soundgarden gets wind of this... They learn the song that day and cover the song "Copkiller" during their set in the name of free speech.

Now, THAT'S badass.

I remember the 2 Live Crew controversy, as well as Public Enemy's "911, It's a Joke" controversy. Those early hip-hop artists definitely got a bad rap (no pun intended...well, maybe!)
