Touch of Evil

With Taylor

A morbid menagerie of past and future metal classics melded into a chaotic cacophony of sinister sounds for bleeding ears. Death is no escape here; in fact, it's where we begin our journey. This ride stops at Maiden, Mayhem, Melvins, Meshuggah, and all points in between. So climb aboard and put your horns, and the volume, way up.

1st Good Evening & Happy Valentine's Day, Taylor. How Are You Tonight?
Taylor (host) 10:05:43 PM
Doing very well, Frankie. Happy Valentine's Day.
Christine 10:08:54 PM
Shoot, this song always makes me laugh. Happy bloody Valentine’s Day!
Frankie 10:10:02 PM
Yesterday Marked The 50th Anniversary Of Black Sabbath's Debut L.P. It Also Marked The Birth Of Heavy Metal Music As We Know It.
Taylor (host) 10:10:58 PM
Indeed. We're celebrating that tonight.
Taylor (host) 10:11:44 PM
Happy Valentine's Day, Christine! That song makes me laugh, too... until I remember it's a true story.
Mark Dilley 10:16:06 PM
Hey Taylor!
Taylor (host) 10:17:06 PM
What's up, dude? The CDs made it safely. I'll give them a listen this week.
Mark Dilley 10:17:52 PM
Cool, thanks!
Frankie 10:18:11 PM
Speaking Of Black Sabbath, Did You Bring In Sabbath's Debut Album With You Tonight?
Taylor (host) 10:18:18 PM
I did.
Taylor (host) 10:18:27 PM
I've got a special song planned for the occasion.
Christine 10:19:35 PM
Yay.
Taylor (host) 10:20:45 PM
Lots more "yay"s coming your way, Christine. I've got a few jams I know you're going to love.
Frankie 10:25:30 PM
Okay. I'll Just Wait For N.I.B. Later. Maybe On The Classics Hour (12 Midnight)
Taylor (host) 10:25:53 PM
Different song for the occasion, but it'll be a great one.
Dave 10:29:09 PM
Good evening Taylor!
Taylor (host) 10:29:17 PM
Good evening sir!
Dave 10:32:35 PM
Happy birthday to the debut LP by Black Sabbath (Feb 13th, 1970 - Friday the 13th) and the subsequent rise of heavy metal!
Taylor (host) 10:36:43 PM
That birthday will be celebrated tonight.
Dave 10:43:06 PM
Excellent!!! One of the best debut albums ever to be released, and certainly one of the most (if not the most) influential releases ever! I hope to hear a large chunk of material from it tonight, but I'll settle for what ever you decide to play.
Dave 10:50:47 PM
I went to the expo last Sunday and had a great time! I got there just a little before 11am and asked someone if you were there, and they said you were, but I guess I just missed you. It was quite crowded there!
Taylor (host) 10:51:16 PM
Really? I'm sorry I missed you, man. I was right up front at the tables from Open-Noon.
Taylor (host) 10:51:39 PM
Yeah, we had a great turnout. It was a really fun day. I found a few choice gems, too.
Dave 10:54:06 PM
Oh well, maybe next time. I go to all of the expos (it's like Christmas Day twice a year for my music collection).
Dave 10:58:05 PM
Hey, I recognize this song! It's the one you use as the music bed for your show promo! : )
Taylor (host) 10:58:25 PM
It is. Good ears!
Christine 10:59:08 PM
I recognized that too! This playlist is f-ing beautiful.
Dave 11:00:02 PM
I especially love the strained sound of the guitar at the beginning!
Taylor (host) 11:00:37 PM
One of my absolute favorite songs ever. Easy. I rage so hard in the studio when this is playing.
Dave 11:01:32 PM
Rage on, brother!
Irene Liu 11:40:05 PM
Ooo I was wondering when we’d get that sweet peter Steele action
Dave 11:42:21 PM
Ha! This IS a pretty song!
Taylor (host) 11:44:12 PM
Hey Irene! Yes, you can't do a Valentine's Day show without playing Type O. There's a rule about that.
Dave 11:58:12 PM
Obscenities in B-flat...what a great album title! The only thing better than that is the label...Listenable Records!
Dave 11:59:20 PM
HERE WE GO!!!
Dave 11:59:36 PM
"Evil Woman"
Dave 12:01:32 AM
Too bad this song was never released on the US version of the album.
Taylor (host) 12:01:53 AM
They've since corrected that. I don't think any of the modern pressings omit it.
Dave 12:03:46 AM
I remember buying the LP decades ago, and it didn't contain "Evil Woman". Neither does my CD copy.
Taylor (host) 12:03:59 AM
Crazy. I don't think I've ever owned a copy without it.
Dave 12:08:01 AM
I had to buy the Symptom of the Universe: 1970-1978 compilation to get "Evil Woman". Even the We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll compilation didn't have it back then.
Taylor (host) 12:09:14 AM
That's crazy. It's such a cool song.
Dave 12:11:23 AM
I've been so used to hearing that album without it, that it sounds quite a bit different from the rest of the record.
Taylor (host) 12:12:24 AM
I've never really thought about that, but I guess it does. Definitely not as dark as the rest of the record. But I guess I took it for granted because so much stuff they did later is on the mellower side.
Dave 12:15:32 AM
Yeah, there's definitely a dark sort-of supernatural feel to the record, whereas "Evil Woman" sounds to me like a consciously made hit single to make the record company money. But a great song nonetheless!
Dave 12:19:08 AM
Any chance of hearing more from Sabbath's debut tonight?
Taylor (host) 12:19:24 AM
Just the one. Love songs the rest of the night.
Dave 12:19:59 AM
Good deal! Thanks for playing "Evil Woman".
Taylor (host) 12:20:02 AM
It's pretty ironic, what you pointed out about that song. Today, you'll hear all kinds of Sabbath tunes on the radio... but never "Evil Woman".
Taylor (host) 12:20:20 AM
ELO's "Evil Woman" is about it.
Dave 12:23:41 AM
When I used to listen to AOR commercial rock stations, the only Sabbath tracks they would play were "Paranoid", "Iron Man", "War Pigs", and occasionally "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and "Heaven and Hell".
Taylor (host) 12:23:59 AM
Yeah, I've mostly heard those first three.
Dave 12:29:43 AM
"War Pigs" was my favorite of those. One of the great underrated anti-war songs that used the theme of God's eternal damnation of those powers-that-be who send the poor, less well-to-do young men off to war to die. A classic!
Taylor (host) 12:31:56 AM
Definitely. Have you heard the Faith No More cover? They do a pretty awesome version.
Dave 12:33:04 AM
Yeah I have. It's been years since I've heard it. I'll have to YouTube it and give it another listen!
Taylor (host) 12:33:36 AM
The live rendition from You Fat Bastards is the best version.Mike's vocals are just insane.
Dave 12:43:10 AM
The most unique cover version of it I've ever heard was by a band called Rondellus (from Estonia). They specialize in playing music in the style of the Medieval period. They play all period-appropriate instruments, and they even sing all the songs in Latin! They released an album called Sabbatum: A Medieval Tribute to Black Sabbath back in 2002 or 2003 which contains "War Pigs" (titled in Latin: "Verres Militares"). It is VERY HAUNTING!! You should definitely check it out!
Taylor (host) 12:43:47 AM
Nice, that sounds rad! I'll write them down.
Taylor (host) 12:43:56 AM
You'll like this next one.
Dave 12:44:36 AM
Ironically, I first heard it here on KSPC back in 2002!
Taylor (host) 12:44:52 AM
Really? That's pretty rad.
Dave 12:45:52 AM
I was wondering if you were gonna play some Maiden...always glad to hear them!!
Dave 12:49:37 AM
I think the station might still have the copy of Sabbatum there in the studio. I asked John to play it on his World show a few years ago, and I think he did, if I remember correctly (I'm getting too old to remember everything!)
Taylor (host) 12:50:30 AM
I'll have to take a look. If it's world music, those bins are locked up right now. I'm not sure if they'd file it in the underground library.
Dave 12:51:37 AM
Yeah, check it out when you get a chance.
Dave 12:53:25 AM
Great playlist tonight! : )
Taylor (host) 12:54:53 AM
Thanks, man. Good night all!
Dave 12:54:53 AM
Thanks for the awesome show tonight! Take care, be safe, and I'll hear you again next week. Thanks again and good night!
