Let's just say if a certain film appeals to me at a certain time, then I'm a fan of that film, whether or not I'm a fan of that particular genre. The same can be said about me as far as music is concerned!

Myself, I'm watching nothing but horror films all month long in honor of the upcoming holiday. I've screened 6 so far.

Doing well sir. The Big Sleep is my go to. He is just a badass. I know it had some flaws production wise, but he is cool as hell.

You nailed it. The Big Sleep is my favorite film of his. His dialogue is just magnificent.

The UCLA Film School did a screening several years back, so I was finally able to see it on the big screen. That was a bucket list moment for me.

For example, only a few years ago, I finally saw the Italian horror film Black Sabbath (after which the band was named) from 1963. I like some horror films, more of the psychological ones like The Shining, that rely much more on mental elements than blood & guts and graphic slasher elements (not that those elements gross me out or are too much for me to handle, I just think they've been overdone to death an have become cliché). Black Sabbath was a very fine film I thought, with great...

Can’t remember the last time I heard the Dillinger Escape Plan. Very cool. They used to give out sample discs at shows and that’s where I discovered them.

Still probably the best live band I've ever seen. They're right at the top of my list.

Start out as a Slayer record. Then when the grooves get worn out from too much play, get recycled into another LP of your choice, and so on and so on! And then when you want to finally rest, have someone bury your worn out vinyl remains in the sand on some beautiful Oregon beach! (I've been on Oregon beaches before, and you have chosen an awesome final resting place indeed!)

I was being semi-sarcastic. I used to have a ton of those promos. I usually kept them if it was a band I dug. I even have a bunch of the cassingles they used to give out way back in the day.

Riki Rachman was a tool, but that show doesn't get enough credit. I heard more bands for the first time there than I can count.

And it's we listeners who are happy beyond anything you'll ever know, to have a place we can show up to every week and listen to great metal from all eras and styles, and to be able to chat with you and other fellow metalheads...to truly have a sense of community and belonging! I’m here for 3 hours of metal myself. Laughing at the Riki Rachman reference. Look it up. He was not a metal fan. Just MTV puppet

Even when I was first getting into this music in junior high, the metal kids were the coolest in the school.

He did some classic interviews with musicians who actively despised him and they were utterly hostile to him on the air. It was highly entertaining.

I remember him interviewing Al Jourgensen when Ministry's Psalm 69 came out, and Riki kept insisting there's no way the guitar on "TVIII" was real.

If that’s not metal, I don’t know what is. Those who know, acted accordingly.

At first, the band was polite, like, "yeah, that's all us, playing that fast."

Riki kept saying stuff like, "yeah, but you obviously sped up the tape..." Annoying commentary like that.

Finally, Al snapped and said, "look, man, we play the song every night, so come watch us do it live. Next question..."

Ah! Jesus built my hot rod. Such a good record! Start to finish!

But they did show some awesome videos along with the crappy ones. I used to tape it every week and watch the best songs like 10 times each, over and over again.

Then I could fast forward through Ugly Kid Joe.

I bet I have some of those VHS tapes somewhere. I think I need to do some digging.

They opened for Slayer at the final show, and that was my first time seeing them. I wasn't expecting much, but they sounded killer.

Do you ever see show, Total Video Request Live? It was a show from outta Orange County? Not the MTV crap with Carson Daly. They would play cool stuff that wasn’t being played nationally.

Ugh. It was a show on KDOC. The host Ghia would play cool videos from all kinds of cool bands. Too bad it didn’t last ling enough to keep going.

That sounds rad. Videos were my lifeline when I was younger and not able to buy many records. I used to dub the audio onto cassettes and make my own mix-tapes from the videos. I listened to those religiously.

That sounds like a cool method of making mix-tapes!

It would have been great to have access to a show like that, instead of just the obvious choices MTV played. At least popular music was really good in the early '90s.

I really wish it kept going. It was great for introducing new music. I know it’s not metal but it was my first introduction to Sonic Youth

Nice. See, I never saw a single one of their videos until "Drunken Butterfly".

It was very fun, Dave. Plus I have always loved a wide range of music, so those tapes were all over the place. I specifically remember one of them had "Man In A Box", "Mama Said Knock You Out," then Warrant's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in a row.

I actually discovered lots of bands by watching Beavis & Butt-head on MTV!

They totally are, Papa. A lot of metal bands are releasing their stuff on cassettes and download only now.

I get the vinyl love, but cassettes? They were kinda of a pain in the butt.

I remember making so many mixtapes back in the day in the '80s. One of them I remember had a pre-Kill 'Em All release of "Hit the Lights" from a demo tape!

I actually sold all of my metal cassettes a couple years ago. I was huge into the format back in the day, but I don't even have a player anymore.

It felt like a Metallica kind of night.

Veronica, if you've never heard me say it, that Tiamat record is seriously in my Top-5 of all time. If you dig that track, you'll probably love the whole album.

I kept my cassette deck . Wasn’t sure why. Just fortunate, I guess.

I even recorded the US Festival '83 during Metal Day. Judas Priest absolutely killed it that day! I even captured David Lee Roth's completely drunken performance with Van Halen on those same tapes. He made a complete ass of himself! Eddie was pissed!

Actually, Dave, I'm sure you know the whole underground metal scene was born from tape traders all of the world copying band demos and trading with other metal heads.

Ha. David Lee Roth was great at making an ass of himself. I'm actually a bigger fan of the Sammy years. I know that's blasphemy, but as far as the records by them I listen to the most, that's where my allegiance lies.

I love the early Van Halen stuff, too. But I think Sammy was a way better singer.

That's basically how most music scenes operate and survive.

Ha. Thanks for the backup, Papa! Seriously, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is probably my favorite VH record. Plus, the only time I ever saw them was with Sammy, and he sounded fantastic.

Sammy was a better singer, but David was a better frontman and had better stage presence (when he wasn't too drunk).
