Touch of Evil

Oct 2, 2020 10:00 PM – 1:00 AM

Specialty

With Taylor

A morbid menagerie of past and future metal classics melded into a chaotic cacophony of sinister sounds for bleeding ears. Death is no escape here; in fact, it's where we begin our journey. This ride stops at Maiden, Mayhem, Melvins, Meshuggah, and all points in between. So climb aboard and put your horns, and the volume, way up.

Dave 10:02:59 PM
Good evening, Taylor!
Taylor (host) 10:03:23 PM
Howdy, Dave! How are you?
Dave 10:03:48 PM
Okay. How 'bout you?
Taylor (host) 10:04:02 PM
Doing excellent. I'm digging your picture!
Taylor (host) 10:04:18 PM
That's a great movie.
Dave 10:04:34 PM
Can you see it clearly?
Taylor (host) 10:04:53 PM
For sure. I recognized it right away.
Dave 10:05:45 PM
I saw it online a little while ago, and I had to use it for tonight's pic, for obvious reasons! ; )
Taylor (host) 10:06:04 PM
I named the show after it, so you made a fine choice.
Dave 10:07:00 PM
Very cool! I'll have to watch the movie sometime!
Taylor (host) 10:07:23 PM
It's great. Not sure if you're a film noir fan, but it's one of the best ever in that genre.
Veronica S 10:09:21 PM
good evening, dj! looking forward to hearing what you've got in store for the next few hours.
Taylor (host) 10:09:57 PM
Howdy, Veronica! You can expect a lot of very brutal stuff just like this Belphegor track. And maybe a couple pretty ones.
Dave 10:11:01 PM
Let's just say if a certain film appeals to me at a certain time, then I'm a fan of that film, whether or not I'm a fan of that particular genre. The same can be said about me as far as music is concerned!
Taylor (host) 10:11:14 PM
That's a great way of looking at it, Dave.
Taylor (host) 10:11:52 PM
Myself, I'm watching nothing but horror films all month long in honor of the upcoming holiday. I've screened 6 so far.
Papa Rich 10:15:16 PM
When it comes to film noir, gimme some Bogart.
Taylor (host) 10:15:35 PM
Bogie's my all-time favorite actor, Papa. How are you, sir?
Papa Rich 10:17:22 PM
Doing well sir. The Big Sleep is my go to. He is just a badass. I know it had some flaws production wise, but he is cool as hell.
Taylor (host) 10:17:51 PM
You nailed it. The Big Sleep is my favorite film of his. His dialogue is just magnificent.
Taylor (host) 10:18:29 PM
The UCLA Film School did a screening several years back, so I was finally able to see it on the big screen. That was a bucket list moment for me.
Dave 10:19:57 PM
For example, only a few years ago, I finally saw the Italian horror film Black Sabbath (after which the band was named) from 1963. I like some horror films, more of the psychological ones like The Shining, that rely much more on mental elements than blood & guts and graphic slasher elements (not that those elements gross me out or are too much for me to handle, I just think they've been overdone to death an have become cliché). Black Sabbath was a very fine film I thought, with great...
Papa Rich 10:20:21 PM
So cool. Can’t explain why but he just epitomized cool.
Taylor (host) 10:20:31 PM
He's just... that dude.
Dave 10:21:31 PM
...narration by Vincent Price. I always make it a point to watch it every Halloween, as it seems to be aired by one of the cable channels annually.
Taylor (host) 10:22:00 PM
Black Sabbath is a fun one for sure, Dave. I love it all, old and new, psychological and straight-up slasher.
AmoXomA 10:22:59 PM
Hey guys ^_^ taylor, Papa, Dave and Veronica
Taylor (host) 10:22:31 PM
But I have a particular fondness in my heart for '80s slasher movies and the old Universal Monsters films. Those are my go-to's.
Taylor (host) 10:22:52 PM
Howdy, AmoX! How's Oregon tweeker country treating you?
Taylor (host) 10:23:04 PM
Keeping safe, I hope?
AmoXomA 10:23:35 PM
Brutal start so far, Taylor :-D
Taylor (host) 10:23:14 PM
Just getting started, AmoX.
AmoXomA 10:23:53 PM
The show, Not The job
Taylor (host) 10:23:39 PM
Ha! I was hoping that was what you were referring to.
Papa Rich 10:24:29 PM
Hi AmoXomA!
AmoXomA 10:25:10 PM
The job is beautiful. Life in a yurt at 6500ft. With an AK-47 watching beautiful girls grow up
Taylor (host) 10:25:08 PM
Wow, AmoX. I can barely wrap my head around that visual.
Taylor (host) 10:25:17 PM
No problems so far?
AmoXomA 10:26:08 PM
Wish I could post pics here, one hell of a view..
Taylor (host) 10:25:53 PM
Oh, I bet. Oregon is so gorgeous.
Dave 10:26:22 PM
Hey AmoXomA, Papa Rich and Veronica S!
Taylor (host) 10:26:31 PM
Still my favorite place in the world. My ashes will be scattered along its coastline when I ascend to Valhalla.
Papa Rich 10:26:42 PM
Sounds great AmoXoma. Please stay safe.
AmoXomA 10:27:26 PM
One problem.. ended up meeting the woman I wanna spend the rest of my life with.. now I have to introduce her to the boss :-/
Papa Rich 10:26:59 PM
Hi Dave!
Taylor (host) 10:27:16 PM
Although, maybe I'll have someone spill some of the ashes in the studio first.
Taylor (host) 10:27:40 PM
Why is that bad, AmoX. Love is a beautiful thing.
AmoXomA 10:29:01 PM
Introducing her to the boss may screw the job up, worth it but ..
Taylor (host) 10:28:56 PM
Why would your boss care? Are you not allowed to have company up there?
AmoXomA 10:29:42 PM
Ahh, who am I kidding, totally worth it ^_^
Papa Rich 10:29:31 PM
AmoXoma, I’m married. We all have to deal with that. Good luck to you, seriously. Love is a beautiful thing.
AmoXomA 10:30:08 PM
No company, no nuthin..
Taylor (host) 10:30:23 PM
If your boss gives you any crap, give them my number. I'll set them straight.
AmoXomA 10:31:18 PM
Thanks Papa :-) thanks Taylor.. good to know you got me
Taylor (host) 10:31:06 PM
You're among friends, AmoX. We've all got you.
Dave 10:31:35 PM
Taylor, I hear that now you can have your ashes/remains processed into not only diamonds and other gemstones, but also into vinyl! Why not just be recycle into a Slayer or a Fuck the Facts LP? That would be so killer! You could continue to speak even after your dead!
Dave 10:32:00 PM
* recycled *
Taylor (host) 10:32:14 PM
Ha. I actually have thought of that, Dave. It would be cool, but I'd hate to make my final arrangements too complicated.
Taylor (host) 10:32:44 PM
This song! "Spit on yourself... you're so beautiful..." Genius.
AmoXomA 10:33:32 PM
I'd be too tempted to speak on my own vynil and say something creepy a.f.
Taylor (host) 10:33:17 PM
Ha! Now, that would be awesome.
Papa Rich 10:33:19 PM
That’s what’s cool about love. Sometimes you find it without looking for it. And when you find it, it makes it that much special. Best of luck and hopefully the start of something special.
Taylor (host) 10:33:27 PM
Well said, Papa.
Papa Rich 10:37:20 PM
Can’t remember the last time I heard the Dillinger Escape Plan. Very cool. They used to give out sample discs at shows and that’s where I discovered them.
Taylor (host) 10:37:55 PM
Still probably the best live band I've ever seen. They're right at the top of my list.
Dave 10:37:56 PM
Start out as a Slayer record. Then when the grooves get worn out from too much play, get recycled into another LP of your choice, and so on and so on! And then when you want to finally rest, have someone bury your worn out vinyl remains in the sand on some beautiful Oregon beach! (I've been on Oregon beaches before, and you have chosen an awesome final resting place indeed!)
Taylor (host) 10:38:13 PM
Sounds like a plan, Dave.
Papa Rich 10:39:46 PM
Do they still give out discs like that? Sounds bad, but I haven’t had any one give out promos like that at any recent shows I’ve been to.
Frankie 10:40:22 PM
Good Metal Evening, Taylor.
Taylor (host) 10:40:08 PM
I doubt it, Papa. I'm probably the only person who still collects CDs.
Taylor (host) 10:40:15 PM
Good evening, Frankie.
Papa Rich 10:40:23 PM
Barring the recent events. Obviously
Frankie 10:41:41 PM
Good Evening, AmoXomA
Dave 10:42:34 PM
I still collect CDs, Taylor! They still make up the bulk of my collection!
Dave 10:42:48 PM
Hey, Frankie!
Frankie 10:44:20 PM
Good Evening, Dave.
Frankie 10:44:59 PM
I Still Collect CD's Too.
Papa Rich 10:45:04 PM
For the record, it’s my wife’s birthday. I tried to play this show and no one was interested. Not an indictment, just putting it on the record. Absolving me of all future conflicts stemming from my involvement from this show.
Taylor (host) 10:45:08 PM
I was being semi-sarcastic. I used to have a ton of those promos. I usually kept them if it was a band I dug. I even have a bunch of the cassingles they used to give out way back in the day.
Taylor (host) 10:45:35 PM
Ha. Happy birthday, Mama Rich!
Taylor (host) 10:45:57 PM
It's okay, we still love her. Touch Of Evil isn't for everyone.
Papa Rich 10:46:26 PM
Thanks Taylor. She’s cool. Just likes to give me shit sometimes.
Taylor (host) 10:46:50 PM
If she's married to you, she's definitely cool. Seriously, give her my best.
Papa Rich 10:49:43 PM
Oh she is definitely special if she puts up with me. And she does rock because she knows that this music is for me and doesn’t question it. I will send your wishes to her. Thanks, that means a lot.
Taylor (host) 10:50:10 PM
You got it, Papa.
Taylor (host) 10:57:20 PM
fs.usda.gov
Papa Rich 10:59:17 PM
Where we at in the alphabet? I lost track
Taylor (host) 11:02:37 PM
We are on the H's, Papa. A letter which featured many more bands than I was expecting. I thought we might get through the rest tonight, but we're not even close.
Taylor (host) 11:03:11 PM
And then the I's take up like three full shelves. We'll probably be on them until next October.
Taylor (host) 11:03:38 PM
Not really, but you know what I mean.
Papa Rich 11:04:20 PM
Most excellent
Taylor (host) 11:05:14 PM
Some thrashy gems for Dave coming up in this set.
Frankie 11:06:12 PM
It's Time For The Letter H.
Dave 11:11:51 PM
I love thrashy gems!
Taylor (host) 11:13:27 PM
This one's choice right here.
Dave 11:13:19 PM
Sounds excellent!!
Dave 11:22:34 PM
HA!!! This sounds like Deep Purple meets Slayer!
Taylor (host) 11:23:18 PM
Good call! I can totally hear that mash-up. I only have the one record by that band, but I always forget how fun their stuff is.
Papa Rich 11:25:09 PM
Headmeat? No God Forbid, but Headmeat?
Dave 11:25:29 PM
I've NEVER heard an organ with that kind of sound used in metal songs like these ones you play on this show. Sounded awesome!!
Taylor (host) 11:26:06 PM
Ha. Yeah, I have some pretty obscure ones, Papa.
Taylor (host) 11:26:22 PM
That Hearse record is pretty unique, Dave. You'd probably dig the rest of their stuff.
Dave 11:26:56 PM
Sounds interesting! I'll have to check it out.
Papa Rich 11:28:42 PM
Do you care for God Forbid or just didn’t have anything by them? Just wondering because they didn’t make the “G” portion.
Taylor (host) 11:29:25 PM
Just don't have anything by them, Papa. I guess I've never stumbled across a used disc in all these years.
Papa Rich 11:31:39 PM
Ah, really its gotta be used? 😆 . Do you like them? How can I contribute if you are interested?
Veronica S 11:31:43 PM
not that the other songs haven't been great, but i really like this heathenspawn track
Taylor (host) 11:32:25 PM
I always try to buy used if I can, Papa. Any money that goes into this show comes out of my pocket, so I try to as frugal as possible.
Taylor (host) 11:32:43 PM
Yes! I love when an obscure band lands! Glad you're digging it, V!
Papa Rich 11:36:11 PM
If someone were to send you some music to listen to, would you be opposed? If you weren’t, where should that music go to?

Frankie 11:47:28 PM
Good Evening, Veronica S
Frankie 11:47:57 PM
You're Doing Classics Early, Taylor?
Taylor (host) 11:48:07 PM
Indeed, Frankie.
Papa Rich 11:48:24 PM
I being of sound, body, and mind have not been asked by KSPC or any affiliation to contribute any way shape or form to provide any material to its affiliates. I do so as a willing contributor to the shows I strongly support.
Taylor (host) 11:48:42 PM
Ha. I know, Papa. But thanks for clarifying.
Papa Rich 11:49:13 PM
Just making sure we are good.
Veronica S 11:49:23 PM
hello, frankie
Taylor (host) 11:49:46 PM
Some bands just slip through the cracks for me. When I order stuff online, I'm much more likely to order obscure stuff that I know I'll never stumble across in a record store.
Frankie 11:52:01 PM
Oh I See.
Papa Rich 11:52:38 PM
Your show rocks! Understandable you can’t have everything. I just think it would be cool to contribute. No pressure. You like it, you like it. If not, oh well.
Taylor (host) 11:52:58 PM
I'll check out anything you send me, Papa.
Papa Rich 12:01:34 AM
Cool. But now I got to get up and do some work. 😂,
Taylor (host) 12:01:53 AM
Ha. Sacrifices must be made.
Papa Rich 12:03:26 AM
True but mind blowing considering what you bring us weekly.
Taylor (host) 12:03:50 AM
Nah, this is easy.
Taylor (host) 12:04:16 AM
I've always said that I just show up and play records. It's the listeners who make this show great.
Papa Rich 12:07:36 AM
You sell yourself short. We aren’t here just for the music but also because of the fun it is to be with other metal lovers. You bring the soundtrack, we show up.
Taylor (host) 12:08:28 AM
Hey, I'll take it.
Taylor (host) 12:09:26 AM
I'm here because I get to listen to my favorite music for 3 hours every Friday. I'm still mindblown that so many people are digging it with me.
Taylor (host) 12:12:01 AM
Ha. You can all thank Headbanger's Ball for this one. They played a video off this record and that's what introduced me to Metal Church.
Taylor (host) 12:12:59 AM
Riki Rachman was a tool, but that show doesn't get enough credit. I heard more bands for the first time there than I can count.
Dave 12:13:41 AM
And it's we listeners who are happy beyond anything you'll ever know, to have a place we can show up to every week and listen to great metal from all eras and styles, and to be able to chat with you and other fellow metalheads...to truly have a sense of community and belonging! Thank you for all you do on these shows! It definitely makes a difference!
Taylor (host) 12:14:27 AM
It's my pleasure, Dave. I've always met the coolest people in the metal community, so I'm happy to give them a place to interact.
Frankie 12:15:48 AM
Any Ozzy O. Tonight, Taylor?
Taylor (host) 12:15:37 AM
We'll see what happens, Frankie.
Papa Rich 12:16:13 AM
I’m here for 3 hours of metal myself. Laughing at the Riki Rachman reference. Look it up. He was not a metal fan. Just MTV puppet
Taylor (host) 12:16:24 AM
Even when I was first getting into this music in junior high, the metal kids were the coolest in the school.
Taylor (host) 12:17:08 AM
He did some classic interviews with musicians who actively despised him and they were utterly hostile to him on the air. It was highly entertaining.
Frankie 12:18:08 AM
Okay. I'll Wait.
Taylor (host) 12:18:13 AM
I remember him interviewing Al Jourgensen when Ministry's Psalm 69 came out, and Riki kept insisting there's no way the guitar on "TVIII" was real.
Papa Rich 12:18:36 AM
If that’s not metal, I don’t know what is. Those who know, acted accordingly.
Taylor (host) 12:18:39 AM
At first, the band was polite, like, "yeah, that's all us, playing that fast."
Taylor (host) 12:19:10 AM
Riki kept saying stuff like, "yeah, but you obviously sped up the tape..." Annoying commentary like that.
Taylor (host) 12:19:51 AM
Finally, Al snapped and said, "look, man, we play the song every night, so come watch us do it live. Next question..."
Papa Rich 12:20:40 AM
Ah! Jesus built my hot rod. Such a good record! Start to finish!
Taylor (host) 12:21:08 AM
But they did show some awesome videos along with the crappy ones. I used to tape it every week and watch the best songs like 10 times each, over and over again.
Taylor (host) 12:21:43 AM
Then I could fast forward through Ugly Kid Joe.
Taylor (host) 12:22:12 AM
I bet I have some of those VHS tapes somewhere. I think I need to do some digging.
Taylor (host) 12:22:43 AM
You're right, Papa. That record is a monster.
Taylor (host) 12:23:09 AM
They opened for Slayer at the final show, and that was my first time seeing them. I wasn't expecting much, but they sounded killer.
Papa Rich 12:25:14 AM
Do you ever see show, Total Video Request Live? It was a show from outta Orange County? Not the MTV crap with Carson Daly. They would play cool stuff that wasn’t being played nationally.
Taylor (host) 12:25:32 AM
I don't think so. I just know TRL.
Papa Rich 12:28:03 AM
Ugh. It was a show on KDOC. The host Ghia would play cool videos from all kinds of cool bands. Too bad it didn’t last ling enough to keep going.
Taylor (host) 12:28:48 AM
That sounds rad. Videos were my lifeline when I was younger and not able to buy many records. I used to dub the audio onto cassettes and make my own mix-tapes from the videos. I listened to those religiously.
Dave 12:30:05 AM
That sounds like a cool method of making mix-tapes!
Taylor (host) 12:30:10 AM
It would have been great to have access to a show like that, instead of just the obvious choices MTV played. At least popular music was really good in the early '90s.
Papa Rich 12:30:23 AM
I really wish it kept going. It was great for introducing new music. I know it’s not metal but it was my first introduction to Sonic Youth
Taylor (host) 12:30:48 AM
Nice. See, I never saw a single one of their videos until "Drunken Butterfly".
Taylor (host) 12:31:52 AM
It was very fun, Dave. Plus I have always loved a wide range of music, so those tapes were all over the place. I specifically remember one of them had "Man In A Box", "Mama Said Knock You Out," then Warrant's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in a row.
Dave 12:33:49 AM
I actually discovered lots of bands by watching Beavis & Butt-head on MTV!
Papa Rich 12:33:53 AM
✋. Touch of Slayer. Just ready. Bring it.
Taylor (host) 12:36:04 AM
Totally, Dave. B&B were great, but it bummed me out when they played something I liked because I only got to hear part of the song.
Papa Rich 12:36:15 AM
Mixed tapes? Cassettes are making a comeback
Taylor (host) 12:36:57 AM
They totally are, Papa. A lot of metal bands are releasing their stuff on cassettes and download only now.
Papa Rich 12:38:25 AM
I get the vinyl love, but cassettes? They were kinda of a pain in the butt.
Veronica S 12:39:36 AM
this is nice.
Papa Rich 12:39:11 AM
Mixed tapes? Fun to make though.
Papa Rich 12:43:28 AM
Just me, or a rare Metallica sighting?
Dave 12:45:31 AM
I remember making so many mixtapes back in the day in the '80s. One of them I remember had a pre-Kill 'Em All release of "Hit the Lights" from a demo tape!
Frankie 12:45:40 AM
Metallica!
Taylor (host) 12:47:28 AM
I actually sold all of my metal cassettes a couple years ago. I was huge into the format back in the day, but I don't even have a player anymore.
Taylor (host) 12:47:42 AM
It felt like a Metallica kind of night.
Taylor (host) 12:48:13 AM
Veronica, if you've never heard me say it, that Tiamat record is seriously in my Top-5 of all time. If you dig that track, you'll probably love the whole album.
Veronica S 12:49:28 AM
oh rad, i'll have to check it out!
Papa Rich 12:49:26 AM
I kept my cassette deck . Wasn’t sure why. Just fortunate, I guess.
Dave 12:49:33 AM
I even recorded the US Festival '83 during Metal Day. Judas Priest absolutely killed it that day! I even captured David Lee Roth's completely drunken performance with Van Halen on those same tapes. He made a complete ass of himself! Eddie was pissed!
Taylor (host) 12:49:50 AM
Actually, Dave, I'm sure you know the whole underground metal scene was born from tape traders all of the world copying band demos and trading with other metal heads.
Taylor (host) 12:51:09 AM
Ha. David Lee Roth was great at making an ass of himself. I'm actually a bigger fan of the Sammy years. I know that's blasphemy, but as far as the records by them I listen to the most, that's where my allegiance lies.
Taylor (host) 12:52:18 AM
I love the early Van Halen stuff, too. But I think Sammy was a way better singer.
Dave 12:52:25 AM
That's basically how most music scenes operate and survive.
Papa Rich 12:53:02 AM
Im with you. No reason, just love Sammy. We’ll go down swinging. 😆
Frankie 12:53:40 AM
Iron Maiden!
Taylor (host) 12:53:56 AM
Ha. Thanks for the backup, Papa! Seriously, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is probably my favorite VH record. Plus, the only time I ever saw them was with Sammy, and he sounded fantastic.
Dave 12:54:33 AM
Sammy was a better singer, but David was a better frontman and had better stage presence (when he wasn't too drunk).
Frankie 12:55:24 AM
Iron (In Iron Maiden's Name Is Supposed To) Means Heavy.
Taylor (host) 12:54:56 AM
Agreed, Dave. But important distinction... how often was he not drunk?
Taylor (host) 12:55:20 AM
I've heard a lot of the shows from his era, and he just sounds like a buffoon.
Taylor (host) 12:55:43 AM
Iron Maiden was a medieval torture device, Frankie.
Papa Rich 12:55:55 AM
I got you. Plus literally, you are the only person besides me I know who liked the Sammy years
Frankie 12:57:21 AM
Oh. I Didn't Know That. Thanks For The Information.
Dave 12:57:11 AM
Although David basically stole his stage presence, style of dress (leather pants & no shirt), etc. from James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas from the '70s.
Papa Rich 12:57:25 AM
Good night all! Great to spend another Friday with you. Stay safe and hope to hear from you next week.
Veronica S 12:58:11 AM
thanks for the tunes, hope y'all have a good rest of the night!
Dave 12:57:55 AM
Thanks for the great show! Take care, be safe, and I'll hear you again next week. Good night!
Dave 12:58:14 AM
Good night and take care, everyone!
Frankie 12:59:37 AM
Nile!
Taylor (host) 12:59:16 AM
Good night, everyone! Thanks for your ears and the chat. Until next week...
