Touch of Evil

Nov 20, 2020 10:00 PM – 1:00 AM

Specialty

With Taylor

A morbid menagerie of past and future metal classics melded into a chaotic cacophony of sinister sounds for bleeding ears. Death is no escape here; in fact, it's where we begin our journey. This ride stops at Maiden, Mayhem, Melvins, Meshuggah, and all points in between. So climb aboard and put your horns, and the volume, way up.

Good Metal Evening, Taylor. Happy Red Friday.
Taylor (host) 10:06:43 PM
Hello, Frankie. Happy Red Friday!
Dave 10:08:33 PM
Good evening, Taylor!
Taylor (host) 10:10:49 PM
Howdy, Dave!
Dave 10:10:43 PM
And a Jolly Red Friday to ya!!
Taylor (host) 10:11:35 PM
And to you, as well! How are you?
Dave 10:13:48 PM
Hangin' in there. I just got back from the store, buying stuff to make a pre-Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving meal (stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, apple pie, egg nog, etc.).
Taylor (host) 10:14:59 PM
Good stuff! You doing Thanksgiving early this year?
Frankie 10:15:47 PM
Good Evening, Dave.
Dave 10:19:55 PM
The wife and I usually do a pre-Thanksgiving meal with the aforementioned foods (the stuffing and mashed potatoes being instant). No turkey, as I am a vegetarian, and she a "pseudo vegetarian". Then we'll go to her parents' house on Thanksgiving Day for the regular meal. We'll have enough leftovers between our stuff and their stuff to carry us into the first week of December.
Taylor (host) 10:20:47 PM
Right on, man. That's a cool way to do it.
Taylor (host) 10:21:03 PM
You can never go wrong with left-over mashed potatoes and stuffing.
Dave 10:20:37 PM
Good metal evening, Frankie!
Dave 10:21:56 PM
Yeah, stuffing and mashed potatoes/gravy are such a perfect autumn combination of food!
Taylor (host) 10:22:51 PM
Those are my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I eat turkey, but I'm not a huge fan.
Dave 10:25:43 PM
All that tryptophan in the turkey makes you very tired, which explains why everyone sleeps right after a large meal on Thanksgiving. I always wondered why that was when I was a kid.
Taylor (host) 10:26:51 PM
I need to stay awake. I'm DJing an evening of Thanksgiving programming that evening for my family.
Dave 10:28:54 PM
That's cool!
Frankie 10:29:32 PM
So It's "Blood" In The Song's Titles Tonight, Taylor?
Taylor (host) 10:29:41 PM
That's the plan, Frankie.
Frankie 10:29:53 PM
Oh Okay.
Dave 10:33:09 PM
You'll have to excuse my profile pic for tonight, as it doesn't exactly fit tonight's programming (it's a pic of Tina Turner with David Bowie; it was from last night's Soul Satisfaction show with the Boss Guy). I changed it over a few hours ago, so it should switch over to the pic I chose for tonight.
Taylor (host) 10:34:22 PM
It's showing me Iron Maiden right now.
Dave 10:34:45 PM
Oh!!! You're seeing Iron Maiden's Maiden Japan (the Venezuelan cover)?
Taylor (host) 10:35:52 PM
Yep. It's too small to see the details, though. I can just tell it's Eddie.
Dave 10:36:03 PM
Hmmm...I still can't see it on my end. How very frustrating!
Dave 10:37:01 PM
OH!!! THERE WE GO! NOW I CAN SEE IT!
Frankie 10:38:08 PM
1985? Cool. 😎
Dave 10:41:24 PM
Eddie is holding up the severed head of poor Paul Di'Anno on the left side of the pic (in Eddie's right hand).
Taylor (host) 10:42:56 PM
I figured. But my image is circular, so you can just see his hand lifting into the air, out of frame.
Taylor (host) 10:45:11 PM
suicidepreventionlifeline.org
Dave 10:45:48 PM
Yeah, my image is circular too. Actually, Eddie is holding Paul's head close to his own. You'll be able to see it better when you enlarge it on your iPhone.
Dave 10:49:20 PM
Lots of sick "bloody" carnage going on tonight! I love it!
Taylor (host) 10:50:23 PM
I'm glad, man! Yeah, this is always a pretty fun episode to put together.
Dave 10:51:47 PM
I'll bet you had tons of fun choosing which songs to play and in what general order for this show.
Taylor (host) 10:52:49 PM
I ended up with like 6 hours worth of tunes!
Taylor (host) 10:53:28 PM
The hard part was whittling that stack down. I'm trying to mainly play tracks I didn't play last year, with a few obvious exceptions.
Dave 10:53:03 PM
That's crazy!!!
Taylor (host) 10:55:05 PM
Plus I went through the entire shelf of records I hadn't listened to yet, and pulled every single one that had a song title with "blood" on it. Then I spent all week listening to those. So there are a bunch of discs I'm playing for the first time tonight (even if I've played the band in the past).
Dave 10:54:45 PM
It's always good to have way more than you actually need, so you'll then have those leftovers for next year's show, or for any of the regular shows during the year.
Taylor (host) 10:56:05 PM
I mean, it's pretty easy to find titles with "blood" in them in the metal world.
Taylor (host) 11:00:33 PM
montereybayaquarium.org/animals/live-cams
Papa Rich 11:00:13 PM
What about blood being in the band name? 3 inches of Blood. Does that count?
Taylor (host) 11:02:36 PM
Hey Papa! We're only doing the song titles for the theme tonight. I really wanted to play Blood Feast, also, but I left them at home.
Taylor (host) 11:02:51 PM
Did you notice I played God Forbid for you a couple weeks ago?
DJ Sinic 11:03:55 PM
Wait.....this isn’t the Wham! Make it big hour?
Taylor (host) 11:04:14 PM
Sorry, Sinic. That was from 9-10.
Papa Rich 11:03:39 PM
I saw that. I cant believe I missed it. Works been killer. Glad you got your hands on some of their music
DJ Sinic 11:04:23 PM
Dang it!
Taylor (host) 11:04:25 PM
Yeah, it's a cool disc!
Dave 11:04:01 PM
You should make a list = call it your "Blood List". Make an alphabetical artist list of songs with "blood" in the titles. When Red Friday nears each year, you can simply refer to the list and pull each disc as you need. And if you forget a title you know you have, you'll have it in the list!
DJ Sinic 11:04:50 PM
Good evening Taylor
Taylor (host) 11:04:59 PM
Actually, Edie was killing it with the '80s stuff from 9-10. When I came in she was playing New Order and she closed her show with Devo.
DJ Sinic 11:05:36 PM
Im enjoying what I’m hearing.
Taylor (host) 11:05:40 PM
I actually just did a song title search on Discogs, Dave. I can search my collection for the word "blood" and it will give me every record that word appears on.
Taylor (host) 11:06:15 PM
I'm glad, Sinic Sir. This band in particular quickly became one of my favorites.
Dave 11:05:58 PM
Oh okay, there you go!...even better!
Taylor (host) 11:07:32 PM
And then there's this band, who are just in a class of their own.
Dave 11:07:34 PM
And they would be...?
DJ Sinic 11:08:21 PM
Machine gun
Taylor (host) 11:08:31 PM
Car Bomb.
DJ Sinic 11:08:59 PM
This is impressive af
Taylor (host) 11:09:27 PM
Their live shows are insane. They have huge strobes triggered to the kick drum, so the lights end up pummeling you just like the music.
Taylor (host) 11:10:18 PM
I saw them open for Gojira at the Glass House a million years ago. I'm so happy I already knew who they were and got there early to see them. I'm not sure they've played anywhere near here since.
Dave 11:10:04 PM
Black blood...plasma at full oxidation!
Taylor (host) 11:10:55 PM
That's pretty much what watching their set did to me.
Taylor (host) 11:11:11 PM
Even Gojira was like, damn, how do we follow that?!
Dave 11:12:25 PM
A metal band with a pulsating light show. That's excellent! I hope the lights don't induce seizures in some of the concertgoers.
Taylor (host) 11:13:17 PM
I just felt super-high when it was over.
Taylor (host) 11:13:31 PM
Not that I would know what that feels like.
Taylor (host) 11:13:39 PM
I'm just... assuming.
Dave 11:13:57 PM
Yeah...suuuuuuuurrrrrrreee you are!!!
Dave 11:14:08 PM
; )
Taylor (host) 11:14:50 PM
I'm a total innocent. I barely ever drink beer anymore.
Dave 11:14:50 PM
Haha!! I'm just messin' with ya!
Taylor (host) 11:16:09 PM
Ha, I know. I really am pretty boring now. My wild days are long behind me. But I can honestly say I had a lot of fun and regret very little.
Frankie 11:16:23 PM
Good Evening, Sinic
Taylor (host) 11:17:26 PM
Although, I do need to find a special Christmas Eve beer for this year. I usually buy something special for that night and enjoy it while I'm wrapping presents.
Dave 11:16:56 PM
That good! It is true what they say...you only live once!
Frankie 11:18:41 PM
Dave, You Change Your Profile Picture. Why Did You Did That For? What Happened To Your Picture Of David Bowie & Tina Turner?
DJ Sinic 11:19:04 PM
Speaking of Gojira. Any tonight?
Dave 11:18:35 PM
I say if you're not hurting anyone else, and hopefully not hurting yourself, then it's fair game!
Taylor (host) 11:19:43 PM
I don't think they have any songs that fit the theme, Sinic.
Frankie 11:19:59 PM
Bile? I Never Heard Of Them Before. I Heard Of Nile.
Dave 11:22:13 PM
The Tina Turner & David Bowie pic was supposed to be just for last night's Soul Satisfaction show only. I changed it earlier today, but it still stayed with the Turner/Bowie pic until a little while ago.
DJ Sinic 11:25:38 PM
I assumed there was a blood one
jessica 11:25:43 PM
Hi DJ Taylor! I've been listening to your show from the start and just now realized all titles have 'Blood' in them. God, am I dense. Great show.
DJ Sinic 11:25:45 PM
Dang it
Taylor (host) 11:27:41 PM
Ha! Hi Jessica! Better late than never! I'm so happy you're enjoying the music.
Taylor (host) 11:28:40 PM
That's a really cool profile pic, Jessica. What artwork is that?
jessica 11:29:18 PM
That's an old pic of Salome, I think. Thanks. Really dig this show! Man, do I sound nerdy. haha
Taylor (host) 11:30:41 PM
Very cool. It's quite striking, even in such a small form. You can nerd out all you want here; you're among friends. Thank you so much for the kind words!
Dave 11:31:55 PM
Whoa Jessica!! I didn't know you liked metal! Glad to see you here!
jessica 11:33:13 PM
Hi Dave! Yeah, this music really speaks to me! What a great way to spend a Friday night!
Dave 11:35:54 PM
Yeah, Taylor kicks off the weekend in a great way, and the Boss Guy finishes it off perfectly!
Frankie 11:39:23 PM
Good Evening, Jessica.
Frankie 11:40:08 PM
Anthrax!
jessica 11:41:28 PM

Taylor (host) 11:59:11 PM
It's so awesome to have you with us, Jessica. I always love meeting new friends on the chat. Please don't ever be a stranger.

Dave 12:17:18 AM
I'll say!
Taylor (host) 12:20:24 AM
I'm just getting you all warmed up for Black Friday next week.
Frankie 12:23:09 AM
Taylor, What Metal Songs Are You Going To Play On Black Friday (Next Friday Night)?
Taylor (host) 12:23:36 AM
You'll have to tune in and find out, sir.
Dave 12:23:44 AM
Things are getting bloody sick in here right now!
Taylor (host) 12:24:08 AM
I already played the night's one pretty song. Sorry, Dave, it's relentless from this point forward.
Dave 12:26:05 AM
Hey, I'm not complaining! I'm just stating the obvious facts as they stand. ; )
Dave 12:26:27 AM
Sick is good!
Taylor (host) 12:26:29 AM
Ha. I'm glad this playlist is hitting. That was the plan.
Dave 12:28:01 AM
Were you mentioning recently something about Touch of Evil swag giveaways, or something like that?
Taylor (host) 12:28:15 AM
Yep. You want to send me your address?
Taylor (host) 12:28:49 AM
Next Friday.
Dave 12:30:26 AM
Do I send it to KSPC c/o Taylor? or do I send you my address over the chat (which you won't show to anyone else)?
Taylor (host) 12:31:12 AM
Next week, I'll post my email address in the chat once everyone's here so you can all send me your mailing address there.
Frankie 12:32:19 AM
Hey Taylor, Have You Seen The 1994 Movie, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective? Cannibal Corpse Made A Cameo Appearance In That Movie!
Taylor (host) 12:32:09 AM
Yes, they did. Jim Carrey was a big fan of theirs back in the day.
Frankie 12:32:46 AM
Slayer!
Dave 12:32:16 AM
Okay, cool! Thanks for the info!
Taylor (host) 12:32:54 AM
There's also a TV cut of the movie which is about 10 minutes longer, and one of the extended scenes is their full performance. It even shows him crowd-surfing in that version.
Frankie 12:34:27 AM
Oh Yeah. That's Right. I Forgot All About That Fun Fact.
Dave 12:37:51 AM
Wow!! Two pretty songs for me?!? Aren't I special!!
Taylor (host) 12:39:16 AM
Hey, it was the least I could do.
Dave 12:39:29 AM
Actually I thought the Car Bomb track was quite pretty!
Taylor (host) 12:39:41 AM
Ha. I'll tell them you said so.
Frankie 12:40:31 AM
Wrong Song? What Do You Mean?
Taylor (host) 12:40:22 AM
I played the wrong song, Frankie. That's why I stopped it and played a different one.
Dave 12:40:53 AM
I love the rhythm changes in this song!!
Taylor (host) 12:41:18 AM
These first couple Unleashed records are flawless. So perfectly heavy but catchy.
Dave 12:42:51 AM
The slow rhythm parts for some reason remind me of the Melvins.
Taylor (host) 12:43:17 AM
I could hear that.
Taylor (host) 12:44:03 AM
Fun fact: during the final Nirvana recording session, Dave Grohl recorded an Unleashed cover tune on which he played all the instruments. It may have actually been the first "true" Foo Fighters recording. But it's never been released.
Taylor (host) 12:44:33 AM
I'm pretty sure it was "Onward Into Countless Battles."
Frankie 12:45:29 AM
Oh
Frankie 12:46:16 AM
I Didn't Know That Fun Fact, Taylor.
Taylor (host) 12:45:56 AM
Obscure, but true.
Dave 12:46:53 AM
Was it a formal studio session, or was it a home recording from the sessions that yielded "Do Re Mi"?
Dave 12:47:42 AM
Or maybe from the studio sessions that yielded "You Know You're Right".
Taylor (host) 12:47:45 AM
It was the same session at which they recorded what turned out to be the final officially-released Nirvana track, "You Know You're Right". "Do Re Mi" was much earlier; there are demos of that going back to 86-878.
Taylor (host) 12:48:09 AM
86-87, obviously.
Dave 12:50:03 AM
I know Kurt and Pat Smear recorded home demos of "Do Re Mi" as late as early '94.
Taylor (host) 12:50:41 AM
There are few sketches of songs that were on the first Nirvana demo from 86 that they would revisit throughout the years.
Taylor (host) 12:51:11 AM
And a couple of cool ones that never got redone properly, but had tons of potential.
Taylor (host) 12:54:00 AM
If you ever have a chance to check it out, one of my favorite Nirvana songs is called "Opinion". He only played it once, acoustically, live on a radio show the night he wrote it. And then evidently never went back to it again. But it's a stellar track.
Dave 12:54:35 AM
I really wish "Do Re Mi" had been fuly realized as a completed song. I read somewhere that Paul McCartney really liked it a lot, and said that if The Beatles early beautiful songs had a '90s equivalent, it would have been "Do Re Mi".
Taylor (host) 12:55:17 AM
I really wish Nirvana had made twenty more records. Unfortunately...
jessica 12:56:13 AM
Taylor - thanks for such an Epic show tonight! I'm so amped up I hope I can get to sleep. See you next week! Good night Dave and Frankie!
Taylor (host) 12:55:46 AM
Especially after In Utero. That record just blew Nevermind out of the water.
Dave 12:55:53 AM
Unfortunately! : (
Taylor (host) 12:56:00 AM
Awh, thank you so much, Jessica!
Dave 12:56:20 AM
Bleach and In Utero were the best ever!
Dave 12:57:42 AM
Thanks for the great Red Friday show tonight! Take care, be safe, and I'll hear you next week for "Black Friday"! Thanks again and good night!
Frankie 12:58:45 AM
Goodnight, Jessica. 🌙
Dave 12:58:16 AM
Good night and take care Jessica, Frankie and everyone else!
