Can't, Papa. I've seen too many horror movies that take place at carnivals. The carnie life kinda freaks me out.

When I first heard “Children of the Grave” (Master of Reality being one of my earliest LPs) back in junior high, I had a particularly harrowing and scary experience listening to it. It was around the time I was first introduced to weed, and I believe it might have been laced with something. I was hearing things in the song that I later realized weren’t actually there, and I never heard them again.

So, Austin Powers wasn’t alone in his fears…

But one thing that was there… at the end of the song where you hear the whispering of “children of the grave…”, there’s some sort of sound, like a clarinet or a recorder being played… that part still makes me feel a little ill at ease.

Ha. I'm sure Black Sabbath would have loved knowing they had that effect on you at the time.

That part is trippy as hell in the headphones. I've definitely noticed that the few times I've ended a set with it.

Dave , do you understand the Russian lyrics fluently, just wondering

No, I am probably years away from ever being fluent. But there are certain words which I pick up on, and with a few familiar words in a sentence, I can get a basic idea of what is possibly being said. And especially when those words are in Cyrillic, it improves my ability to pronounce in Russian. Reading the Cyrillic alphabet isn’t too difficult, I just need to work on my vocabulary, grammar and comprehension. I’ll get there one day.

All of their stamps said Почта СССР, which translates as “Pochta SSSR”, or USSR Post.

Plus, the fact that I have Russian heritage from my grandmother on my Dad’s side, and I remember hearing her speak a some Russian phrases when I was growing up, only makes me more interested in learning the language. I also used to have a co-worker lady who was from originally from Russia. She helped me a lot with some of the basics.

Anyone ever have a band they liked or felt were gonna be big but couldn’t get anyone you knew to listen to them? Especially if they didn’t really make it like you thought.

You just described a big chunk of the bands I love, Papa.

There’s gotta be one you were passionate about but no one else was interested.

I've played Cigarettes After Sex for a bunch of people who should have loved them based on the other bands they love, and they all just kinda went, "meh."

I'm like, really? You think Radiohead is brilliant, but this is doing nothing for you?

Papa, that was me with Pantera. Everyone was on the Nirvana train and I was discovering Pantera.

But I also really like having bands that are like my little secret. When a band I love gets huge, I'm of course really happy for them, but I do get bummed having to see them in an arena instead of at the Glass House.

I dug Fireball Ministry and thought people I knew who liked Sabbath would dig them but nope. I still dig the early records but I was wrong about how their career went.

I remember back in junior high in 1982, I was one of probably only two or three students on campus who had ever heard of Iron Maiden. The Number of the Beast was brand spanking new, and I think it was a little too hard, loud and satanic for even the tough badass kids. I exposed my friends to it, and they started getting into it as well. And to think that Metallica and Slayer were just around the corner!

That's me with Fear Factory. I got into them when the first record came out, and it was one of the coolest things I had ever heard (still is). Then Demanufacture came out and they started making videos, and then they did a cover of "Cars". I still enjoy their second and third records, but after that they totally lost me, even as they got way bigger.

I even remember recording my Killers and Number of the Beast LPs on blank cassettes for my cousin to listen to when he was able to. His parents were very religious and had him on a rather short leash. He really got into Maiden years later. I like to think I corrupted his morality, but I’m sure he would have discovered Maiden and metal eventually, with or without me.

Same with White Zombie. I was cuckoo about La Sexorcisto when it first came out. Then they showed the Thunder Kiss video on Beavis and Butthead and they got huge. Then they made one more great record and Rob Zombie decided the other people in his were extraneous and started making bad movies and strip club music. The end.

Ha! I have the Hellbilly Deluxe vinyl. It is a cool picture disc but I think I only listened to it once. I bought it more for the artwork.

And don't even get me started on how a bunch of music nerds in tight pants ruined Tool.

Hellbilly has a couple of cool songs on it, but overall it's a pale imitation. The few songs I've heard here and there that are more recent have been excruciating, though.

Yeah, that first White Zombie record was quite good, I remember buying it back in the Beavis & Butt-head days. I actually watched B&B not only for the outrageous humor, but also to get exposure to samples of the music through the videos they would watch in the episodes. I discovered a lot of new musical artists that way!

I remember Hellbilly Deluxe fondly, as it was one of the CD's my girlfriend at the time brought over and we knocked boots to it often

Reboots of old shows are never as good as the originals, in my humble opinion.

I love the Munsters. Have the dvds but I don’t think you can capture in a remake what made that show awesome.

Although, considering how abysmal the most recent Halloween movies have been, maybe I should be nicer to Rob for the really bad ones he made. I'd watch either other those 10 times again before I'd sit through Halloween Version 3.0, or whatever they called that last Jamie Lee Curtis installment.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled that he cast his wife as Lily. I have nothing against her, but really? There was no other actress you considered for such an iconic role?

Ha. That was just once! And I've heard them do that in concert, so I figured they were giving me their blessing.

I feel the same about the old Godzilla movies. I watched some of the movie from sometime in the 2000s with the computer-generated monster and high-tech special effects, but it just wasn’t the same as seeing an actor in a rubber suit playing the monster. Give me the dude in the rubber Godzilla suit with all the cheesy sound effects and even cheesier special effects and bad editing from the original Japanese films, and I’m a happy guy!

I hear you, Dave. I actually dug the most recent movies a lot, but those old school Godzillas are something special.

I feel the same way about the Planet Of The Apes series, as well. I really dug the newer trilogy a lot, but the original 5 movies are still my favorite.
