Your dew point is 74. That's what we get in Maryland in the summer. Now you have a taste of what we experience all summer long

I went for a 5 mile walk this morning and was fairly sweaty from all the humidity. Just kind of a sticky, gross situation.

Yeah, I don't like this kind of summer weather. Fortunately, it's an infrequent occurrence, spawned from the former hurricane near Baja CA.

True on humidity. But, I'll take the break from the 100+ degree dys and 80+ degree nights

Reminds me of the few times I've been to FL.

In Maryland right now it's 76 with a dew point of 64 degrees. Not bad for early September if you ask me.

Indeed 82 with the 74 dewpoint is much better than 100-whatever!

I remember some Halloweens where it was fairly hot. Dressing up wasn't as fun as it normally was.

Dug the rain yesterday, finally cooled things off a bit

Yeah, I'm OK with a little rain to change it up a bit. Nice to get my lawn and plants watered after having to dial things back majorly over the summer.

If we had gone to the Western Field Ornithologists meeting in Reno, going on right now, we'd have smoke and haze from wildfires to contend with as well as 100+ temps on the day we would have flown in. I'm sure glad we didn't go.

RMD, do you regularly go to that meeting in Reno?

Wal, we attended 5 straight meetings about 10 years ago. They are in different places every year.

Ah, I see.

We haven't been since 2015 and because of the increased incidence of wildfires, we may not go again, unless the venue is right next to the airport, or ~4 miles away like in Reno

The 5 we went to were in Sierra Vista AZ, Petaluma CA, Olympia WA, San Diego CA, and Billing MT

Well, I guess by the name of it, yes!

If it's every in near Claremont.....

Yes. The most easterly recent meetings have been in Boulder and ?Colorado City CO and ?Santa Fe NM

I wish they would have a meeting in Pomona/Claremont!!

What are the Western Field Ornithologists meetings like Rob, lectures 'n stuff? Do you learn anything new, do they discuss the new models coming out?

Boulder and Santa Fe are very nice places to go for a conference

I loved Boulder when I was at that WFO meeting!

I went to the Experimental Aircraft Association meeting in Oshkosh Wisconson many years ago. It lasts a week... you better like airplanes!

I had a wonderful time in NM last month when I was out that way

JF: They are always Thursday through Sunday. We fly in from the east on Wednesday. Thursday and Sunday are all day field trips, departing around 6 am and arriving back at 4 or 430 pm

JF, that sounds like a lot o fun! I love seeing airplanes, even though I really don't know much about 'em.

Friday and Saturday have morning field trips and afternoon scientific paper sessions and identification quizzes. I love the mix of field trips and science

So, yes, I learn new things: models, research.

JF, a whole week in Oshkosh, neat! I sadly don't like aircraft that much

Maybe the aviation and ornithologist enthusiasts can combine their conferences and just talk about all kinds of stuff that flies in the air?!

RB, I have owned this CD for over 20 years and only discovered that I owned it last year. I bought it a long time ago and thought I lost it and that was that. But it popped up again!

We don't grade schpell'n here Robb!

Wal, I use both10X and 8X binoculars. The former enlarges birds more, the latter is lighter weight and smaller (better for travel)

(I think I had played it once or twice before I lost it, like 3 days after buying it.)

RMD, are there particular models/makes of binoculars that are preferred by those in the birding community (and yourself)?

JF, I actually do grade for spelling, punctuation and general use of grammar. So be careful! Report cards will be sent out! Haha!

Wal, yes, but I think that there are differing opinions. Swarovskis and Zeiss are good. Bushnell/Bausch & Lomb were (are?) regarded highly. I bought my binoculars over 20 years ago and I'm happy with both pairs so I haven't kept up with what other birders thing

I used to be hard core into binoc's but now I carry a monocular. If the objective lenses are the same diameter the 8x offers better light gathering abilities and covers a wider field... Jeff digs optics, maybe too much!

RMD, you mentioned weight, so that's a major consideration, I take it...? What about general size? Do you pack a bag with you and have to keep that in mind, too?

RB, the CD is now in the case with my other 399 CDs. If I lose this CD case, I lose a LOT of jazz!

Wal, I pulled a double CD from the CD bookshelf in the basement that I bought over a decade ago. When I got to the tracks that were not on the 80s vinyl the band put out, I realized that I had never listened to it! Ten + years and I'd never played it. Yeesh.

Wal, the weight and size are big considerations for me. The smaller lighter 8x pair (which is also not as good as the other pair) is what I usually fly with, in a backpack that goes under the seat in front of me.

Wal, the band is Mydolls, an early 80s punk band from Houston. They appeared in the Wenders movie "Paris, Texas" (which I still haven't seen). Some of their songs are long-time faves of mine (including Imposter and Soldiers Of A Pure War). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mydolls

JF/Wal, I have a spotting scope, which I've also used to look at planets and comets.

Are/were the Mydolls considered "underground?"

They work reasonably well and are more portable/forgiving!

Why do you use a spotting scope over a telescope?

Robb, yes. They were never on a major label. The double CD came out in 2007 on Grand Theft Auto records and has all their studio tracks, a couple of demos, and a ton of live performances

Wal, the spotting scopes birders use are designed for the birding market. (That's about all I know on the subject.)

RB, yes, extended jams work well at the top of the hour for me. I have to "reset" the show at 4, and the next break is at 4:18, so if I can time it to hit within that slot, it means a nice, long song can fit!

RMD, but the spotting scopes you use are powerful enough to view other planets and items in space?

I've noticed other "jazz radio stations" (no names will be mentioned here) seem reluctant to play extended jams like these because they might be beholden to ratings and whatnot. But the only restrictions I have are the points in which I have to come on the air, anything else in between is open territory.

Spotting scopes usually zoom from 20x to 60x or 80x, T scopes are much more powerful, you wouldn't buy a T scope with any less than 100's of power, spotting scopes are more portable
