Yo Wal! Finally a cool day in the Mont!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:04:01 PM
Hi Robb and Wal! I see that it's 82 in Claremont
Wal (host) 3:04:04 PM
Hey RB! Ha! Yeah, not too bad today!
Wal (host) 3:04:25 PM
RMD, yes, we're in the low 80s today. Kinda pleasant but kinda muggy, too. Unusual.
Wal (host) 3:04:35 PM
Had a decent dose of rain yesterday
Wal (host) 3:04:52 PM
How's life in MD right now?
Robb Bell 3:04:57 PM
Hey RMD!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:05:43 PM
Your dew point is 74. That's what we get in Maryland in the summer. Now you have a taste of what we experience all summer long
Wal (host) 3:05:45 PM
I went for a 5 mile walk this morning and was fairly sweaty from all the humidity. Just kind of a sticky, gross situation.
Wal (host) 3:06:23 PM
Yeah, I don't like this kind of summer weather. Fortunately, it's an infrequent occurrence, spawned from the former hurricane near Baja CA.
Robb Bell 3:06:40 PM
True on humidity. But, I'll take the break from the 100+ degree dys and 80+ degree nights
Wal (host) 3:06:40 PM
Reminds me of the few times I've been to FL.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:07:11 PM
In Maryland right now it's 76 with a dew point of 64 degrees. Not bad for early September if you ask me.
Wal (host) 3:07:30 PM
Argh, wrong cut on the CD!
JF>SA 3:07:59 PM
Blame it on the humidity Wal!
Wal (host) 3:07:59 PM
I think (hope) that any major summer heat waves are all over by now
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:08:11 PM
Indeed 82 with the 74 dewpoint is much better than 100-whatever!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:08:18 PM
Hi JF
Wal (host) 3:08:21 PM
Hey JF! I sure will. Anything to cast off my mistakes on the weather, will do!
Wal (host) 3:08:51 PM
But I'm fairly okay with a dry heat. Sure it's warm, but it's not super uncomfy.
JF>SA 3:08:56 PM
Hi Rob and Robb and Wal!
Robb Bell 3:09:06 PM
Hi ya JF!
Wal (host) 3:11:02 PM
I remember some Halloweens where it was fairly hot. Dressing up wasn't as fun as it normally was.
JF>SA 3:11:35 PM
Dug the rain yesterday, finally cooled things off a bit
Wal (host) 3:13:46 PM
Yeah, I'm OK with a little rain to change it up a bit. Nice to get my lawn and plants watered after having to dial things back majorly over the summer.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:13:52 PM
If we had gone to the Western Field Ornithologists meeting in Reno, going on right now, we'd have smoke and haze from wildfires to contend with as well as 100+ temps on the day we would have flown in. I'm sure glad we didn't go.
Wal (host) 3:14:21 PM
RMD, do you regularly go to that meeting in Reno?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:15:28 PM
Wal, we attended 5 straight meetings about 10 years ago. They are in different places every year.
Wal (host) 3:15:43 PM
Ah, I see.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:16:03 PM
We haven't been since 2015 and because of the increased incidence of wildfires, we may not go again, unless the venue is right next to the airport, or ~4 miles away like in Reno
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:17:14 PM
The 5 we went to were in Sierra Vista AZ, Petaluma CA, Olympia WA, San Diego CA, and Billing MT
Wal (host) 3:17:47 PM
Is it always in the West?
Wal (host) 3:17:59 PM
Well, I guess by the name of it, yes!
Robb Bell 3:18:39 PM
If it's every in near Claremont.....
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:19:02 PM
Yes. The most easterly recent meetings have been in Boulder and ?Colorado City CO and ?Santa Fe NM
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:19:36 PM
I wish they would have a meeting in Pomona/Claremont!!
JF>SA 3:22:09 PM
What are the Western Field Ornithologists meetings like Rob, lectures 'n stuff? Do you learn anything new, do they discuss the new models coming out?
Wal (host) 3:26:17 PM
Boulder and Santa Fe are very nice places to go for a conference
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:26:50 PM
I loved Boulder when I was at that WFO meeting!
Wal (host) 3:26:53 PM
Haha, JF! New models of birds? Or you mean recently (newly) discovered species?
JF>SA 3:27:36 PM
I went to the Experimental Aircraft Association meeting in Oshkosh Wisconson many years ago. It lasts a week... you better like airplanes!
Wal (host) 3:27:39 PM
I had a wonderful time in NM last month when I was out that way
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:27:57 PM
JF: They are always Thursday through Sunday. We fly in from the east on Wednesday. Thursday and Sunday are all day field trips, departing around 6 am and arriving back at 4 or 430 pm
Wal (host) 3:28:07 PM
JF, that sounds like a lot o fun! I love seeing airplanes, even though I really don't know much about 'em.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:28:42 PM
Friday and Saturday have morning field trips and afternoon scientific paper sessions and identification quizzes. I love the mix of field trips and science
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:29:19 PM
So, yes, I learn new things: models, research.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:30:16 PM
JF, a whole week in Oshkosh, neat! I sadly don't like aircraft that much
Wal (host) 3:30:28 PM
Maybe the aviation and ornithologist enthusiasts can combine their conferences and just talk about all kinds of stuff that flies in the air?!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:30:50 PM
Wal, maybe!
JF>SA 3:31:09 PM
It's a LONG week Rob!
Wal (host) 3:31:12 PM
Save a few bucks and run a combo conference!
Wal (host) 3:33:31 PM
I suppose the WFO has to host conferences in areas where they can hold interesting field trips where there are plenty of birds to scope out.
Wal (host) 3:34:38 PM
RMD, is there a particular type of binoculars you use when birding?
JF>SA 3:35:10 PM
Tiny Tim????
Wal (host) 3:35:26 PM
JF. Maybe it was....??
Robb Bell 3:35:51 PM
As long as you're rolling promos, can we here our good man Vincent?
Wal (host) 3:36:22 PM
RB, oh! Yeah, I need to pull that one out at some point here today.
Robb Bell 3:37:41 PM
Ah nothing like vibes to set a good vide!
Robb Bell 3:37:58 PM
*vibe
Wal (host) 3:38:25 PM
RB, I have owned this CD for over 20 years and only discovered that I owned it last year. I bought it a long time ago and thought I lost it and that was that. But it popped up again!
JF>SA 3:38:47 PM
We don't grade schpell'n here Robb!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:38:48 PM
Wal, I use both10X and 8X binoculars. The former enlarges birds more, the latter is lighter weight and smaller (better for travel)
Wal (host) 3:39:00 PM
(I think I had played it once or twice before I lost it, like 3 days after buying it.)
Robb Bell 3:39:32 PM
Thnx JF
Wal (host) 3:39:34 PM
RMD, are there particular models/makes of binoculars that are preferred by those in the birding community (and yourself)?
Wal (host) 3:40:08 PM
JF, I actually do grade for spelling, punctuation and general use of grammar. So be careful! Report cards will be sent out! Haha!
Robb Bell 3:40:51 PM
Uhoh. Beter wach it..
Wal (host) 3:41:01 PM
RB, -4 points!
Robb Bell 3:41:29 PM
Are you gonna make us diagram our sentences now??
Wal (host) 3:41:50 PM
Hahaha! That could very well happen, RB. Don't give me any new ideas for my lesson plans!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:42:17 PM
Wal, yes, but I think that there are differing opinions. Swarovskis and Zeiss are good. Bushnell/Bausch & Lomb were (are?) regarded highly. I bought my binoculars over 20 years ago and I'm happy with both pairs so I haven't kept up with what other birders thing
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:42:22 PM
*think
Robb Bell 3:42:27 PM
I'm diggin this spin Wal! Please don't lose this CD for another 20 years!
JF>SA 3:42:37 PM
I used to be hard core into binoc's but now I carry a monocular. If the objective lenses are the same diameter the 8x offers better light gathering abilities and covers a wider field... Jeff digs optics, maybe too much!
Robb Bell 3:42:56 PM
VINCENT!!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:43:15 PM
JF, yep. I understand
Wal (host) 3:44:41 PM
RMD, you mentioned weight, so that's a major consideration, I take it...? What about general size? Do you pack a bag with you and have to keep that in mind, too?
Wal (host) 3:45:09 PM
RB, the CD is now in the case with my other 399 CDs. If I lose this CD case, I lose a LOT of jazz!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:50:30 PM
Wal, I pulled a double CD from the CD bookshelf in the basement that I bought over a decade ago. When I got to the tracks that were not on the 80s vinyl the band put out, I realized that I had never listened to it! Ten + years and I'd never played it. Yeesh.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:53:00 PM
Wal, the weight and size are big considerations for me. The smaller lighter 8x pair (which is also not as good as the other pair) is what I usually fly with, in a backpack that goes under the seat in front of me.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:53:49 PM
CD book*case* not shelf
Wal (host) 3:53:57 PM
Haha, RMD, yeah! Gotta play the stuff you buy sooner than later!
Wal (host) 3:55:31 PM
RMD, what band was that on the double CD?
Robb Bell 3:55:43 PM
and don't misplace it. πŸ˜‰
Wal (host) 3:56:07 PM
JF, do you have telescopes and all that stuff, too?
JF>SA 4:01:27 PM
Got a couple of spotting scopes, they're not really T-scopes but I use them for that
Robb Bell 4:02:39 PM
Background vocals??
Wal (host) 4:03:33 PM
JF, speaking of all things optics, there's an announcement card for an event hosted by the Southern California Microscopal Society. Are you into microscopes, too?
Wal (host) 4:03:51 PM
RB, someone's definitely makin' a little extra noise!
JF>SA 4:04:07 PM
Uhh, not really...
JF>SA 4:04:30 PM
Growl'n is good!
Wal (host) 4:04:34 PM
Ha. OK, I won't read it for you!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:04:38 PM
Wal, the band is Mydolls, an early 80s punk band from Houston. They appeared in the Wenders movie "Paris, Texas" (which I still haven't seen). Some of their songs are long-time faves of mine (including Imposter and Soldiers Of A Pure War). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mydolls
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:04:56 PM
Sadly, I never saw them live
Robb Bell 4:04:57 PM
Does an excited "YEAH" constitue a vocal??
Robb Bell 4:05:26 PM
*constitute
Wal (host) 4:05:34 PM
RMD, huh, never heard of Mydolls before. Will have to check them out sometime!
Wal (host) 4:05:43 PM
RB, yeah, "yeah" is a vocal!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:05:50 PM
JF/Wal, I have a spotting scope, which I've also used to look at planets and comets.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:06:43 PM
yeah!
Robb Bell 4:06:48 PM
Are/were the Mydolls considered "underground?"
JF>SA 4:06:55 PM
They work reasonably well and are more portable/forgiving!
Wal (host) 4:07:59 PM
Why do you use a spotting scope over a telescope?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:08:17 PM
Robb, yes. They were never on a major label. The double CD came out in 2007 on Grand Theft Auto records and has all their studio tracks, a couple of demos, and a ton of live performances
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:10:26 PM
Wal, the spotting scopes birders use are designed for the birding market. (That's about all I know on the subject.)
Robb Bell 4:10:35 PM
Another extended jam!! Should be expect this every week (an extended jam) at 4?
Robb Bell 4:12:19 PM
Yikes I'm turning dsylexic...
Wal (host) 4:12:38 PM
RB, yes, extended jams work well at the top of the hour for me. I have to "reset" the show at 4, and the next break is at 4:18, so if I can time it to hit within that slot, it means a nice, long song can fit!
Wal (host) 4:13:12 PM
RMD, but the spotting scopes you use are powerful enough to view other planets and items in space?
Wal (host) 4:15:20 PM
I've noticed other "jazz radio stations" (no names will be mentioned here) seem reluctant to play extended jams like these because they might be beholden to ratings and whatnot. But the only restrictions I have are the points in which I have to come on the air, anything else in between is open territory.
JF>SA 4:19:22 PM
Spotting scopes usually zoom from 20x to 60x or 80x, T scopes are much more powerful, you wouldn't buy a T scope with any less than 100's of power, spotting scopes are more portable
Wal (host) 4:22:23 PM
JF, that makes sense!
JF>SA 4:24:08 PM
Luv'n the growl in the last selections!
Wal (host) 4:25:05 PM
JF, it's not by design -- any growlin' you're hearing is purely incidental!
JF>SA 4:26:30 PM
HA!
JF>SA 4:29:54 PM
Ya know when you watch a YT vid they suggest a lot of similar fare, I watched a Buddy Rich solo recorded in Paris '71 and now I'm flooded with BR selections!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:30:36 PM
I feel the need...the indeed need for speed
Wal (host) 4:30:38 PM
JF, that's not a bad thing, is it?! I'd be very okay if YT kept pushing me to watch more Buddy Rich!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:30:44 PM
afternoon cats and kittens <0
Wal (host) 4:30:49 PM
Ahoy, VARZ!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:30:58 PM
ahoy other ranks!
Robb Bell 4:30:59 PM
Yo VARZ!
Wal (host) 4:31:12 PM
VARZ, how are things in your world? Haven't heard from you in a little bit.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:19 PM
I'm just tuning in now sorry I was busy watching Cal football
Wal (host) 4:31:31 PM
How's your alma mater doing?
Robb Bell 4:31:31 PM

Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:32 PM

Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:44 PM
I never listen to sports announcers anyhow
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:52 PM
we are 2-0 now
Wal (host) 4:31:59 PM

Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:00 PM

Robb Bell 4:33:16 PM
True Wal. I dislike the YT push on what they think I want to watch.
Wal (host) 4:33:24 PM
A bunch of bookworms with footballs?!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:54 PM
can be....I mean we recruit jocks like anywhere...but yah our football team is usually fair to middling at best
