no I consider myself a Cal guy....I just root for UCLA because they're local and technically I did take extension classes there

UCLA is 3-0....against smaller schools so far like I said...but they'll start conference play next week and those are the ones that count for more

Well, USC's been in the news lately for well, newsworthy things that don't always involve athletics, I suppose. I'll just leave it there.

theyre pretty cocky when if come to football....but theyve earned it they typically have a great team year in year out

we actually managed to beat them last year AND we beat Stanford

my Dad and I used to go there weekends

I went there a bunch in high school

There was a bowling alley on Garey in Pomona when I was younger

I used to bowl in a league when I lived in Santa Monica...I think that place closed during the pandemic..was on Pico

Bowling alleys seem like a hard biz to run

So many other things for folks to keep occupied nowadays

Same with the mini golfs

havent done that in forever

another thing I used to do w/my Dad as a kid...he usually won he was a pretty mean putter

What was the butterfly trip all about, RMD?

(well, it was about butterflies, I assume)

Ice cream was Dolcezza (locally based company) Mascarpone & Berries. But, the container has a large Mb, as if it were a chemical element (in this case it would be molybdenum)

We were at the Glendening (sp.) Nature Preserve some miles southeast of DC

There's a butterfly garden there, and we were looking at the butterflies coming to the wildflowers. Many skippers, Monarchs, a southern species called Sleepy Orange. Quite a few dragonflies, and a hummingbird too

Then we went to a different part of the refuge and saw some different butterflies. Also a Bald Eagle

in captivity?

No, a free-flying Bald Eagle, an adult. All of the butterflies were wild too.

I didnt know bald eagles got all the way down to DC

I guess the species has made a comeback since the days of DDT, etc

In fact, that Dizzy song I just played previously has Dizzy scat singing at the very top for about 30 seconds. So I just played the song 30 seconds in, so that way the vocals were cut out.

VARZ, I believe two or three pairs of Bald Eagles nest in DC proper. There are/have been several additional pairs nesting within 20 miles of the District of Columbia. They have made quite a comeback in my lifetime, with the banning of DDT.

I am a very rules-oriented type of dude!

they were not in Winslow, AZ...but I have been there and there's actually a statue of someone on a corner there specifically because that Eagles song

RMD--this was on a scenic train ride I took in a part of Arizona called Verde Canyon

it's a much smaller canyon than the Grand Canyon there...but it is very out of the way so the eagles arent bothered by people

I've seen eagles while I was driving on the beltway, and I wasn't even that close to the Potomac River

the only hotels I'm aware of that are in the Sur itslef are two places called the Post Ranch Inn and Ventana

both are very pricey and exclusive--I've stayed at Ventana once as a guest of my uncle

but then there's a few BnBs here and there, I think, that are more reasonable

I stayed in a nice hotel in Morro Bay. Really enjoyed the town.

Can't remember what it was called, but it seemed like a reasonably priced place. But I've also stayed at some BNBs up that way, too.
