I feel the need...the need for indeed to the speed
Wal (host) 3:03:08 PM
Hey VARZ!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:03:17 PM
hey hey!
Wal (host) 3:03:20 PM
How are ya??
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:03:31 PM
Just got done watching Cal lose at Notre Dame 24-17
Wal (host) 3:03:37 PM
Ooof. Sorry!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:03:41 PM
at least we made it close
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:04:11 PM
we were not favored, so....yah at least we gave a good acct of ourselves..we made it close
Wal (host) 3:04:18 PM
How's your other alma mater?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:04:26 PM
you mean UCLA?
Wal (host) 3:04:32 PM
Yep!
Wal (host) 3:04:49 PM
Is it hard to pick one over the other?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:04:55 PM
idk Pac-12 conference play hasnt started yet so they prolly havent played any tough teams yet....I dont follow them as closely
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:04:59 PM
let me check
Wal (host) 3:05:12 PM
Ah. I see you have your favorite.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:05:28 PM
no I consider myself a Cal guy....I just root for UCLA because they're local and technically I did take extension classes there
Wal (host) 3:05:37 PM
How come you ain't supporting the Bruins too?
Wal (host) 3:05:44 PM
Ahhhh, I see!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:06:05 PM
well I will..they just havent played any tough games yet...just smaller schools on the non-conference schedule
Wal (host) 3:06:35 PM
Well, if you spent more time at Cal over UCLA, I totally get it
Wal (host) 3:06:57 PM
Well, I root for the Sagehens!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:07:17 PM
nice
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:07:28 PM
do they have more than intramurals?
Wal (host) 3:07:34 PM
Have you been following them lately?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:07:51 PM
just looking at ESPN I see UCLA squeaked by S. Alabama 32-31 today
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:08:23 PM
UCLA is 3-0....against smaller schools so far like I said...but they'll start conference play next week and those are the ones that count for more
Wal (host) 3:08:31 PM
Yeah, I get it.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:08:53 PM
I dont know if theyre really good..they still have Chip Kelly coaching, I guess
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:09:05 PM
actually I dont even know but I didnt hear of him getting fired yet
Wal (host) 3:09:16 PM
Maybe if you get another degree at UCLA, you'll be more in their corner! Ha!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:09:22 PM
loll right?
Wal (host) 3:09:28 PM
Why not, huh?!
Wal (host) 3:09:37 PM
What's another history degree?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:09:41 PM
I definitely back them against USC...that's the real big game for them
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:09:50 PM
with us it's Stanford
Wal (host) 3:09:56 PM
Yeah, if you have no ties to SC, then it should be Bruins
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:10:12 PM
I have nothing really against USC...I have had friends loyal to them
Wal (host) 3:10:22 PM
I have nothing against any school!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:10:35 PM
my Dad actually hated USC guys...not sure why I think he just didnt like their attitude...whatever
Wal (host) 3:11:11 PM
Well, USC's been in the news lately for well, newsworthy things that don't always involve athletics, I suppose. I'll just leave it there.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:11:14 PM
theyre pretty cocky when if come to football....but theyve earned it they typically have a great team year in year out
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:12:15 PM
we actually managed to beat them last year AND we beat Stanford
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:12:34 PM
but iirc we didnt get into a bowl game...too bad
Wal (host) 3:12:53 PM
What's with the weird names of these bowl games these days?!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:13:05 PM
just sponsorship
Wal (host) 3:13:07 PM
I remember when it was just the Orange Bowl or Fiesta Bowl or whatever.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:13:18 PM
yah...but the big money demands a name
Wal (host) 3:13:21 PM
Ooof, the naming rights are making for some really awkwardly named games
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:13:29 PM
college sports is big business
Wal (host) 3:13:42 PM
And don't get me going on the Crypto situation
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:13:42 PM
my favorite goofy name was the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl
Wal (host) 3:13:52 PM
Sooo weird
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:14:09 PM
or maybe the Meiniecke Muffler Bowl
Wal (host) 3:14:44 PM
I miss the days of the boring names
JF>SA 3:14:49 PM
Hey Wal 'n all, that Max Roach and company's La Villa sure had a smok'n trumpet and trombone duel!!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:15:28 PM
they kept Rose Bowl as the main name of that...but in subtitles it's still "brought to you by..."
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:15:40 PM
hey Jeff!...<0
Wal (host) 3:16:25 PM
JF!! Welcome in!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:16:45 PM
yah I can just barely remember when there were like 4 bowls and that was it
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:16:57 PM
now there's like 40....
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:17:10 PM
or 20 something...whatever it is
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:17:34 PM
and theyre expanding the CFPlayoff to 12..when 8 is probably enough
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:17:54 PM
more games, more money, I guess
JF>SA 3:19:32 PM
Ooh, that was a tuba... A Jazz Tuba!!!
Robb Bell 3:21:05 PM
Hey Wal and Y'all!
JF>SA 3:21:34 PM
Robb Y'all!!!
JF>SA 3:22:08 PM
Two down, one to go!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:22:12 PM
yah..lets hear it for Autumn weather
JF>SA 3:23:16 PM
The heat's comin' back... AAUUUGGGHHH!!!
Wal (host) 3:23:44 PM
Too many bowls, VARZ!
Wal (host) 3:23:52 PM
Yes, a tuba, indeed, JF!!
Wal (host) 3:24:00 PM
RB!! Welcome back!!!
Robb Bell 3:24:17 PM
Now if only "Tidy Bowl" can sponsor a bowl game!
Wal (host) 3:24:20 PM
I'm very good with today's weather, folks.
Wal (host) 3:24:25 PM
Hahahaha!
Robb Bell 3:24:37 PM
It's a perfect Chamber of Commerce Day!
Wal (host) 3:25:00 PM
A great day to support local businesses? Sure!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:25:11 PM
the Tidy Bowl Bowl?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:25:20 PM
sounds like, well, I can't say it loll
Wal (host) 3:25:48 PM
The Bowling Bowl?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:26:06 PM
yah!...the AMF 10-pin footbowl
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:26:17 PM
I used to bowl
Wal (host) 3:26:30 PM
Hahaha!
Wal (host) 3:26:38 PM
I am not a very good bowler, but I do like to bowl
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:26:51 PM
I probably will again, but I have to lose more weight
Wal (host) 3:26:52 PM
Used to bowl in San Dimas at Chapparal Lanes
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:27:09 PM
I dont trust my knees for the time being
JF>SA 3:27:25 PM
Bowlers got big balls, ya know!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:27:27 PM
I was just about to mention Chapparal...yah it's nice there
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:27:38 PM
my Dad and I used to go there weekends
Wal (host) 3:27:53 PM
I went there a bunch in high school
Wal (host) 3:28:09 PM
There was a bowling alley on Garey in Pomona when I was younger
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:28:44 PM
I used to bowl in a league when I lived in Santa Monica...I think that place closed during the pandemic..was on Pico
Wal (host) 3:29:35 PM
Bowling alleys seem like a hard biz to run
Wal (host) 3:29:50 PM
So many other things for folks to keep occupied nowadays
Wal (host) 3:29:58 PM
Same with the mini golfs
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:30:55 PM
havent done that in forever
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:31:10 PM
another thing I used to do w/my Dad as a kid...he usually won he was a pretty mean putter
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:31:41 PM
with a nice Ping Answer for a putter
Wal (host) 3:31:44 PM
Ha!
Wal (host) 3:32:25 PM
Was there a mini golf in the Glendora area?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:32:45 PM
closest one was Bullwinkle's in Ontario I think it is
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:32:58 PM
which became a Boomers long ago and is probably not open anymore idk
Wal (host) 3:33:11 PM
Yep, that's the place I used to go
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:33:15 PM
they had an arcade too
Wal (host) 3:33:19 PM
I read somewhere they are reopening
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:33:29 PM
which was fun until I was about 12...then I discovered girls loll
Wal (host) 3:33:30 PM
(or have reopened?)
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:33:41 PM
so much for arcade games
Wal (host) 3:34:06 PM
Growing up, I remember lining up quarters on the top of the machine. Why??
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:34:13 PM
I remember when Dragon's Lair came out--the first arcade game that cost 50 cents
Wal (host) 3:34:28 PM
Oh yeah, the 50 cent games were deluxe
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:34:33 PM
that plus the fact that I was not good at playing it...I pretty much quit
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:34:43 PM
it was tough to play, I think
Wal (host) 3:35:22 PM
Weren't some of the sit-down video games also 50 cents? Like Pole Position?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:35:34 PM
sometimes
Wal (host) 3:35:39 PM
My memories of 1984 are a little hazy
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:35:44 PM
mine too loll
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:35:54 PM
that's a long time ago
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:36:17 PM
I wonder what they charge now?....I mean there's still arcade games right?
Wal (host) 3:37:01 PM
Maybe???
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:37:16 PM
like Dave and Busters?...I havent been there
Wal (host) 3:37:33 PM
Can't say I've sought out an arcade recently!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:37:39 PM
I'd hate to pay like $2 for one game...that wouldnt sit right
Wal (host) 3:37:46 PM
I guess now you play with like, cards or whatever?
Wal (host) 3:37:57 PM
Swipe and play type of thing?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:38:00 PM
ah yah
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:38:27 PM
if I'm going to pony up bucks I'd rather play blackjack...but dont get me started
Wal (host) 3:38:57 PM
If I'm going to pony up bucks, I'm spending it on a nice dinner!
Wal (host) 3:39:17 PM
I'm not a gamblin' man
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:39:30 PM
you're better off
Wal (host) 3:39:43 PM
Yes, at least a nice dinner is a sure bet!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:39:51 PM
indeed
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:40:24 PM
I'm pretty much ready to quit myself
Wal (host) 3:40:33 PM
Speaking of dinner, I gotta find a spot for tonight
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:40:49 PM
shouldnt get into the sob story but I lost $40 on thursday night footballl...a meaningless touchdown to lose against the spread
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:41:01 PM
Good afternoon everyone! I'm glad the temperatures are normal for a change.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:41:13 PM
hey RMD!....good to cya check in
Wal (host) 3:41:13 PM
RMD
Wal (host) 3:41:16 PM
Howdy!!
Wal (host) 3:41:29 PM
RMD, what did you have for dinner?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:41:32 PM
I'm glad the high is 80 instead of it being 80 still at 11pm
Wal (host) 3:41:35 PM
(since you live in the future)
Robb Bell 3:42:08 PM
Hey RMD!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:42:19 PM
Our dinner was prepared sesame noodles with a salad. And some ice cream.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:42:48 PM
And some beer
Wal (host) 3:42:49 PM
Oh, that sounds good. Thanks for the idea!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:42:58 PM
oooh beer and ice cream...yum
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:43:08 PM
do they have beer flavored ice cream??
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:43:22 PM
We picked up the noodles at a store on the way home from our butterfly field trip.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:43:40 PM
VARZ, probably, but we just had normal icecream
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:44:00 PM
that'd be a genius idea...yah I like coffee flavored ice cream too
Wal (host) 3:44:13 PM
What was tonight's flavor?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:44:37 PM
I once had coffee on ice cream after dinner. Boy did I not get much sleep that night
Wal (host) 3:44:39 PM
I love coffee ice cream, but I gotta watch it these days
Wal (host) 3:45:07 PM
I'm also a decaf person, so there's that
JF>SA 3:46:08 PM
Digg'n this Joe Gordon track Diminishing!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:46:20 PM
Beer was Peabody Heights Brewer Magnetic North Saison 6.5% ABV
Wal (host) 3:46:44 PM
Joe Gordon only had a couple records, this was his last one
Wal (host) 3:47:19 PM
What was the butterfly trip all about, RMD?
Wal (host) 3:47:30 PM
(well, it was about butterflies, I assume)
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:47:38 PM
Ice cream was Dolcezza (locally based company) Mascarpone & Berries. But, the container has a large Mb, as if it were a chemical element (in this case it would be molybdenum)
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:48:37 PM
We were at the Glendening (sp.) Nature Preserve some miles southeast of DC
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:50:00 PM
There's a butterfly garden there, and we were looking at the butterflies coming to the wildflowers. Many skippers, Monarchs, a southern species called Sleepy Orange. Quite a few dragonflies, and a hummingbird too
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:50:36 PM
Then we went to a different part of the refuge and saw some different butterflies. Also a Bald Eagle
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:51:38 PM
in captivity?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 3:55:11 PM
No, a free-flying Bald Eagle, an adult. All of the butterflies were wild too.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:55:40 PM
I didnt know bald eagles got all the way down to DC
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:56:04 PM
I guess the species has made a comeback since the days of DDT, etc
Wal (host) 3:56:32 PM
RMD, that sounds like a really nice time!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:56:56 PM
I went to a butterfly exhibit at the RSABG once a few years back...was interesting
Wal (host) 3:57:28 PM
Yes! They are great up there. I think they renamed the place?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:57:37 PM
yes I heard that
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:57:53 PM
I think they started up having concerts in the small park they have there too
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:58:07 PM
I went to a couple concert/picnics there years ago
JF>SA 3:58:13 PM
Butterflies are free, catch all ya want!
Wal (host) 3:58:26 PM
Hahaha, JF!!
Wal (host) 3:58:43 PM
VARZ, yes, I think they had some gigs there.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 3:59:40 PM
I saw a rock and roll cover band there...and another time a group of female singers that was doing old 40s tunes like the Andrews Sisters
Wal (host) 4:00:30 PM
https://www.calbg.org/
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:00:43 PM
aha!...there you go
Wal (host) 4:00:49 PM
Walking distance from KSPC!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:01:05 PM
yup...it's on the north side of Foothill
Wal (host) 4:01:31 PM
The next time you're in the area, RMD, might wanna try this place out
Wal (host) 4:01:42 PM
(and JF, if you're ever up this way too)
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:01:45 PM
speaking of events...I wonder if we'll finally get the record expo back this fall
Wal (host) 4:02:03 PM
The person who would know is John
JF>SA 4:02:10 PM
There's the Dizzy speed we need!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:02:16 PM
yah I'll have to bring that up tomorrow night
Robb Bell 4:02:23 PM
Extended 4pm cut?
Wal (host) 4:02:43 PM
Yeah, RB, it's about 10 minutes, so on the longer side
Robb Bell 4:03:01 PM
Nice - who's shredding the vibes?
Wal (host) 4:03:50 PM
Vibes is Milt Jackson!
JF>SA 4:05:27 PM
Was/is there a high freq "whine" on this track?
Wal (host) 4:05:59 PM
Yeahhhh, I had to port it from vinyl to CD and there's this whine that came with it
Robb Bell 4:06:26 PM
port to wine??
Wal (host) 4:06:48 PM
It's from my personal jazz LP collection (of which there aren't many) and I don't want to cart vinyl to the station, so I just make a CD of it
JF>SA 4:06:51 PM
Thnx Wal... no Jeff, just you (phew!)
Wal (host) 4:07:00 PM
Port wine!
Robb Bell 4:07:45 PM
This track rocks!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:07:59 PM
it does
JF>SA 4:08:06 PM
Ditto Robb!!!
JF>SA 4:08:23 PM
...and RZ!
Robb Bell 4:08:58 PM
It's great Wal when you can work this extended jams into your show!!
Wal (host) 4:09:45 PM
Yeah, I love playing a really cookin' number like this when I can
Wal (host) 4:10:42 PM
And now for the ballad!
Robb Bell 4:11:20 PM
Wait.... a Ballad?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:11:42 PM
Sounds good, Wal.
Wal (host) 4:11:55 PM
Sure! Why not?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:12:17 PM
Sounds good, Wal (the butterfly thing I should visit on my next visit)
Robb Bell 4:13:10 PM
Just citing the BD&R rules: No ballads, no big bands, no vocals.... but it did break out
Wal (host) 4:13:27 PM
Hahaha, yes. If the tune has a fast section somewhere, I let it play.
Wal (host) 4:14:08 PM
In fact, that Dizzy song I just played previously has Dizzy scat singing at the very top for about 30 seconds. So I just played the song 30 seconds in, so that way the vocals were cut out.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:14:29 PM
VARZ, I believe two or three pairs of Bald Eagles nest in DC proper. There are/have been several additional pairs nesting within 20 miles of the District of Columbia. They have made quite a comeback in my lifetime, with the banning of DDT.
Wal (host) 4:14:30 PM
I am a very rules-oriented type of dude!
Robb Bell 4:14:31 PM
will that extend to tunes that have no vocal stretches too? Ha!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:15:16 PM
that's really cool RMD....we dont see anything bigger than a hawk here in LA
Wal (host) 4:15:29 PM
I'm pretty insistent about the no vocals rule
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:15:31 PM
although I did once see a pair of bald eagles on a vacation in Arizona
JF>SA 4:15:40 PM
YOU EDITTED DIZZY, AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:15:50 PM
Did the eagles like their vacation in Arizona, VARZ? ;-)
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:16:00 PM
you got me
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:16:08 PM
did I dangle a participle there?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:16:16 PM
Or something
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:16:43 PM
living up in the high reaches of the air is probably like a permanent vacation for them
Robb Bell 4:16:46 PM
Were they standing on a corner in Winslow?
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:16:48 PM
Where were you and the eagles though?
Wal (host) 4:17:26 PM
I missed The Eagles when they were last in L.A.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:17:34 PM
they were not in Winslow, AZ...but I have been there and there's actually a statue of someone on a corner there specifically because that Eagles song
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:17:37 PM
Has anybody here seen the band The Eagles? I did once way back in the 70s
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:18:21 PM
RMD--this was on a scenic train ride I took in a part of Arizona called Verde Canyon
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:18:44 PM
VARZ, cool!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:18:53 PM
it's a much smaller canyon than the Grand Canyon there...but it is very out of the way so the eagles arent bothered by people
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:18:59 PM
Amusing about the Winslow Arizona statue
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:19:03 PM
I saw them from the train
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:19:33 PM
yah --there's a statue there that looks like Glen Frey (or whoever)...people take pictures with it
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:19:54 PM
I've seen eagles while I was driving on the beltway, and I wasn't even that close to the Potomac River
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:20:27 PM
speaking of being other places...I'm going on vacation to the Big Sur and Monterrey/Berkeley soon
JF>SA 4:20:53 PM
Next time you play that, Dizzy gets to scat!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:20:55 PM
I'd like nothing better than to spot a California Condor up there--now that theyve been re-introduced to the area
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:21:10 PM
but supposedly they are very very elusive...and there's only a few
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:21:27 PM
VARZ, how nice! I hope you can see condors. And you can listen to KALX and KZSC while you're up there
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:21:32 PM
I'm not really a bird watcher...but I think that would be hella cool
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:22:03 PM
If I manage to get a pic of one I'd be thrilled...I'd post it here for you when I get back...fingers crossed
JF>SA 4:22:25 PM
They're not really Cal Condors, they're South American imports...
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:22:33 PM
really?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:22:53 PM
did they have to breed them with foreign birds before re-introducing them?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:23:13 PM
I heard year ago there were only a few left alive--and all being kept out of danger in captivity
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:23:19 PM
years*
JF>SA 4:24:04 PM
The Cali Condors are extinct, nothing to cross breed with
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:24:15 PM
hmmm
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:24:24 PM
I guess I heard wrong then
Wal (host) 4:25:46 PM
JF, sorry, no scats allowed on BD&R. Read the rulebook!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:25:56 PM
haaha!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:26:10 PM
not even "Salt Peanuts"
Wal (host) 4:26:34 PM
I've had to find versions of Salt Peanuts that don't have the band singing the refrain!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:26:45 PM
I remember that
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:26:58 PM
California Condors are not extinct. Captive-bred individuals were introduced into the wild in Arizona and now California
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:27:04 PM
you're very conscientious....we appreciate what you do, Wal
Wal (host) 4:27:19 PM
Thanks VARZ! I try to keep this show as focused as possible.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:27:20 PM
see that's what I had heard!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:27:32 PM
I guess you'd know RMD, being the birder
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:27:34 PM
The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a New World vulture and the largest North American land bird. It became extinct in the wild in 1987 when all remaining wild individuals were captured, but has since been reintroduced to northern Arizona and southern Utah (including the Grand Canyon area and Zion National Park), the coastal mountains of California, and northern Baja California in Mexico.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:27:42 PM
from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_condor
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:28:05 PM
aha....see...wikipedia is on the case
Wal (host) 4:28:07 PM
Thanks for citing your sources, RMD. I will need the Bibliography annotated next time! Haha!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:28:13 PM
loll
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:28:34 PM
"In 1988, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service began a reintroduction experiment involving the release of captive Andean condors into the wild in California. Only females were released, to eliminate the possibility of accidentally introducing a South American species into the United States. The experiment was a success, and all the Andean condors were recaptured and re-released in South America.[42] California condors were released in 1991 and 1992 in California [...]"
Wal (host) 4:28:40 PM
As an educator, I take plagiarism seriously around these parts.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:29:01 PM
So JF is partly correct
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:29:12 PM
that's quite a story!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:29:30 PM
They must have had a devil of a time finding and corralling them all, I would imagine
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:29:36 PM
I try to cite my sources, Wal.
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:30:38 PM
The Andean Condors might have had transmitters to aid with locating them
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:30:49 PM
yes, I assume they were tagged
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:07 PM
they mustve had some kind of cage and bird bait to bring them back in, though
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:31:18 PM
Yep, only the finest carrion
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:31:42 PM
the culture vultures!
Wal (host) 4:31:56 PM
Feedin' on those pigeons!
JF>SA 4:32:11 PM
Mmmm, carrion!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:32:25 PM
if there's a party, we will be carri ing on
Wal (host) 4:32:30 PM
Hahaha
Wal (host) 4:32:55 PM
Where in CA is the condor's usual habitat?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:00 PM
I guess the easiest way to spot one is if it's soaring overhead
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:16 PM
it's in the hills of the Big Sur south of Monterrey...near the ocean
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:23 PM
exactly where I'm going in Oct
Wal (host) 4:33:31 PM
Ah, I see! Great area!!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:48 PM
yes I've been many times...try to get back there every 5 years or so...it's so nice
Wal (host) 4:33:53 PM
Where do you stay?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:34:18 PM
actually not staying in the are itself this time, just driving through to stop at Monterrey that day
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:34:27 PM
I'll be in Morro Bay the night before
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:34:53 PM
the only hotels I'm aware of that are in the Sur itslef are two places called the Post Ranch Inn and Ventana
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:35:16 PM
both are very pricey and exclusive--I've stayed at Ventana once as a guest of my uncle
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:35:41 PM
but then there's a few BnBs here and there, I think, that are more reasonable
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:35:54 PM
VARZ, that sounds like a nice vacation/trip!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:36:20 PM
yes it will be...hope the weather is clear for the scenery....probably wont be too hot anyway
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:37:04 PM
then I'm going to finish up in Alameda in the Bay Area at the USS Hornet...which is a WW2 area carrier that's a museum ship....my kind of thing--should be fun
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:38:54 PM
πŸ‘
Wal (host) 4:39:02 PM
I stayed in a nice hotel in Morro Bay. Really enjoyed the town.
Wal (host) 4:39:40 PM
Can't remember what it was called, but it seemed like a reasonably priced place. But I've also stayed at some BNBs up that way, too.
Robb Bell 4:42:17 PM
And away we go with the trifecta trumpets!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:42:40 PM
yah we usually stay at a small place called Grey's Inn
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:42:52 PM
it's right on the water
Wal (host) 4:42:55 PM
RB, one more extended jam for the day!
Wal (host) 4:43:02 PM

Wal (host) 4:44:26 PM
Gonna close up shop today with a bird-oriented track in honor of the condor!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:44:57 PM
Bird is the word
Wal (host) 4:45:15 PM
Hahaha! Not that song!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:45:22 PM
loll
Wal (host) 4:45:56 PM
If I can find an uptempo bebop version of Bird is the Word, I WILL play it!!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:46:31 PM
That would be grand, Wal!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:46:31 PM
there's a Family Guy episode where Peter plays that over and over till everyone is sick of it
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:46:51 PM
That would get on my nerves real quickly
Wal (host) 4:48:39 PM
Hahaha
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ πŸ¦€ 4:49:31 PM
and not because I'm a birder...
Wal (host) 4:49:57 PM
