I went to the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1994 hoping to see Dizzy, but later found out he had already passed away. He wasn't slated to play it, but I just thought he might show up!

It was University of Maryland College Park's homecoming, so we avoided that part of the area, including driving through the city on our way home from birding instead of going on the Beltway

I had to park far away from the station but I knew that going into it, so I left extra early.

We wrap the salmon (with salt pepper paprika olive oils) and zucchini in aluminum foil and plop it in our toaster oven at 350 degrees for 25 minuts

You know, that's one thing I lack: a toaster oven. I have never owned one!

I had (maybe still have somewhere?) one of those George Foreman grills. That was a decent device!

Heck, the University of Maryland College Park has a radio station, which just changed frequencies and increased wattage and can actually be heard 6 or 7 miles away again, so I've started to listen to it when I drive.

I know of this station because my now-wife used to listen to it in the 90s when she spent a month or two every year working with a subcontractor of sorts.

I used to be able to hear a station from Mt. SAC back in the day. But I don't know if they have much of a signal anymore...? KSAK. Wikipedia says it's now only 1.9 watts.

There's a couole of low power statiins I like, KOCI in Newport Beach plays a lot of Boss Guy period music.

I still love 90s-indie(-pop)-inflected bands like Horsegirl and Momma (ty Wal for turning me on to the latter)

RMD, never saw any of those bands in their prime. I saw Bob Mould live, but not in HD. I saw Paul Westerberg live, but not in the original Replacements (I did see the Replacements reunion several years ago).

Wal, I saw Husker Du and the 'mats, not on the same bill, in the 80s. Also the Minutemen, Black Flag, and some other bands of that ilk

That's incredible. Again, I saw Mike Watt, but not with the Minutemen. I saw Black Flag, but that was a recent "reunion" date, not in their original format.

All that stuff was too early for me. I was a kid when the early 1980s punk scene was exploding.

But that's why I like fast jazz, it comes from my love of faster punk/rock/hardcore -- the bebop I play is basically "hardcore" jazz in my eyes

Close! I was in the 4th grade when I first heard KSPC.

Wal, I didn't see the original Black Flag, I did see them with Henry. But they were starting to go metal so I lost interest in them

My love of the music on this show prolly comes from my love of early 80s hardcore too :-)

I jammed with Greg Ginn once about 20 years ago at the SST offices in Long Beach. It was a total trip playing with him!

Yeah, my older brother turned me on to KSPC. Also, I was walking in Claremont once with my parents, and I saw a KSPC table (I think it was some kind of street festival like what's happening today), and the students working the KSPC booth gave me a sticker or flier or something. Reinforced the idea that I really should listen to this station.

When I was in fourth grade, geez. Why am I even typing this? Otoh I was in DC (but in fifth grade) and the top 40 stations played quite a bit of soul music so I did get exposed to a bunch of nice stuff
