Hey Wal!!!!
Wal (host) 3:04:11 PM
Ribbbbzzzz!! How are ya??
Ribbzz Robb 3:04:33 PM
I b gooooooood! Howz about u?
Wal (host) 3:05:01 PM
Things are cranking along around here. Nice day outside! Jazz on the radio. All good!!
Ribbzz Robb 3:07:25 PM
Fer sure!
Wal (host) 3:08:00 PM
Just waiting around for the rest of the gang to hop on the chat!
Robb Bell 3:09:35 PM
Maybe they threw their clocks back prematurely, and they'll show up at 4?
Wal (host) 3:10:02 PM
Ha! Very possible!! I hate this time change business.
Wal (host) 3:10:23 PM
Gonna get dark super early tomorrow -- like 4:55?
Robb Bell 3:11:06 PM
Eventually it will get dark that early.
Wal (host) 3:11:47 PM
I am a big fan of the summer. But winters, not so much. I don't like cold, snow, being wet, that sort of thing.
Robb Bell 3:12:16 PM
And with the time change comes the Spinitron goof up. Hits Boss Man every time with his Sunday night
Wal (host) 3:12:31 PM
And the limited daylight just adds to the unfun aspects of all things winter to me
Robb Bell 3:12:39 PM
Fortunatley, the "winters" in so cal aren't that bad
Wal (host) 3:12:58 PM
Oh, wow, that's right -- I could totally see his show getting messed up by Spinitron.
Robb Bell 3:13:09 PM
The time change always kicks my butt
Wal (host) 3:13:19 PM
No, our winters are quite mild, comparatively speaking. I am very thankful for that.
Wal (host) 3:13:30 PM
Me too. It takes me a long time to adjust.
Robb Bell 3:13:39 PM
You'd think that Spinitron could figure out the time change....
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:13:57 PM
Yes, your winters are quite mild... ;-) :-D
Robb Bell 3:14:02 PM
In addition to the time change messing with my bio-clock, the shorter days really bum me out
Wal (host) 3:14:03 PM
I think I'd be more weather-hardened if I was not a native SoCal kid. But having lived here my entire life, I can't adjust to the conditions anywhere else!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:14:03 PM
Hi everyone!
Wal (host) 3:14:15 PM
RMD!! Welcome. How's your almost-winter?
Robb Bell 3:14:19 PM
Hey RMD!
Robb Bell 3:14:43 PM
Ditto on the so Cal native Wal
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:14:49 PM
Hi Wall and Ribbz! Today it was mid to late September, hitting 77 degrees!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:15:08 PM
And hi Robbbbbb
Robb Bell 3:15:26 PM
70 degrees here....
Ribbzz Robb 3:17:30 PM
1/4 the emphasis..
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:17:32 PM
It's still 72 here and it actually looks like it hit 82 in my part of town
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:18:07 PM
So Ribbzz and Robb are two different people?
Ribbzz Robb 3:19:26 PM
No. I'm just messing with my login. So Sorry for the confusion......
Ribbzz Robb 3:20:11 PM
The facebook login doesn't let me change my name.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:20:41 PM
Ah, logging in from two different places! :-O
Ribbzz Robb 3:21:14 PM
Yup!
Wal (host) 3:22:06 PM
77! I'd love to be in MD right now!!
Wal (host) 3:22:28 PM
82, even better!!
Wal (host) 3:22:48 PM
Robb is ALWAYS Robb!!
Wal (host) 3:23:16 PM
Have you been birding plenty in this nice MD weather out there?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:29:46 PM
I have been birding a fair amount. My wife and I went on a field trip to a wetlands site near Baltimore last month, we led a field trip to a riverside location near DC, and there were two western warbler species in the area too.
Wal (host) 3:30:38 PM
That's great. Take advantage of the nice weather while you still can!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:30:50 PM
One warbler was at a birder's yard and was DC's first MacGillivray's Warbler. The other warbler was in Maryland near the Potomac River south of DC and was Maryland's 9th Black-throated Gray Warbler
Ribbzz Robb 3:31:25 PM
RMD - What's the best way to determine a bird species based on its song? I've been hearing a bird at night recently that I don't recall hearing before.
Wal (host) 3:31:26 PM
Have you ever gone birding in some harsh weather? Or do you draw the line at a particular point?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:31:55 PM
Needless to say, I haven't seen too many of either species anywhere. Though my first MacGillivray's Warbler was in Cape May New Jersey just about 25 years ago!
Wal (host) 3:32:33 PM
That's really neat that you're spotting some rare warblers
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:34:02 PM
Ribbzz, there is a free(?) app called Merlin, which I don't have on my flip phone, which is able to 'listen' to your environment and tell you what birds are there. Though it has thought a baby's sneeze was a heron ... it's certainly not perfect.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:34:48 PM
Ribbzz, what does the night bird sound like? Northern Mockingbirds can sing at night https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Mockingbird/sounds, even in the autumn
Ribbzz Robb 3:35:19 PM
Thanks for the tip RMD! I'll check it out. Of course, once I down load the app, I probably won't hear the bird....
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:36:40 PM
Wal, I've gone birding in tropical storm conditions, looking for tropical seabirds that get picked up from the open ocean by hurricanes, the latter of which weaken onshore and 'dump' various seabirds at inland lakes and rivers.
Ribbzz Robb 3:36:59 PM
It's been a few nights, but it sounds like a low pitched whimper...
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:37:56 PM
But if we have a lot of snow (or even a little), I stay home. I sometimes go out after overnight thunderstorms in spring or fall to see if migrating ducks or sandpipers have been forced down on water bodies or open fields respectively
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:38:34 PM
Ribbzz, even if you don't hear that bird, it can identify others in your environs
Wal (host) 3:39:00 PM
Tropical storm, wow. That's some commitment!
Ribbzz Robb 3:39:05 PM
cool. thanks.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:39:37 PM
Ribbzz, if it sounds like a whimper, it is probably not a mockingbird and is likely a western bird that I'm not familiar with
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:39:54 PM
Ribbzz, sure thing
Wal (host) 3:40:13 PM
Or, RB, it might not be a bird at all!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:41:30 PM
Wal, yup. I've only done this in the DC area during such conditions but I have driven to the Delaware seashore after passage of a tropical storm which had weakened from a hurricane. You never know just what you and other birders will see
Ribbzz Robb 3:41:37 PM
True Wal.
Wal (host) 3:42:03 PM
RMD, do you film your sightings? Photograph them? Or just record them in a birding journal?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:42:30 PM
agree with Wal, it might not be a bird at all. You might want to check out Norway/Black Rat vocalizations if you are near to food establishments
Ribbzz Robb 3:43:49 PM
Oooooh Rats?!? I'm far from food establishments, unless of course you count by Smoker......
Wal (host) 3:44:23 PM
Yeah!! Be careful of the critters sneaking around your BBQ!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:44:53 PM
Wal, I've never owned a camera. I do sketches and write notes if I actually discover a rare bird. Ofttimes when I'm one of 25 or 50 people, I'll just write "continuing bird" in my eBird notes. But again, sometimes I'll write a brief description of salient features.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:45:44 PM
It's always good to know what rats sound like. I learned their vocalization when I lived in Naples, Italy, and we weren't near a food establishment. They were kind of all over the place...
Wal (host) 3:46:39 PM
Really, Naples has lots of rats?
Ribbzz Robb 3:47:08 PM
Never thought about rat songs (except maybe the band Rat.....)
Wal (host) 3:48:06 PM
Ha! That would the band Ratt, BTW!
Ribbzz Robb 3:49:56 PM
This tune be jumping!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:59:14 PM
Napoli ha molti ratti
Wal (host) 3:59:41 PM
Oui oui!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:59:47 PM
Napoli ha troppi ratti
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 3:59:55 PM
Naples has too many rats
Wal (host) 4:00:26 PM
Why's that?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:07:43 PM
It's very urban
Wal (host) 4:08:10 PM
Poor sanitation services?
Wal (host) 4:11:29 PM
With all this talk of rats, I've got a vermin-associated song comin' up next!
Rinda 4:11:42 PM
Critically exciting show! Every tune has been raucous! Thanx DJ n hello to everyone in the universe named Robb! ✊🏼✊🏼
Wal (host) 4:12:07 PM
Ha! Hey RDA!! How are ya? Glad you like the tunes.
Wal (host) 4:14:38 PM
BTW, I have been waiting patiently for the update on the VARZcation™, but I haven't seen him back here just yet. Wonder how his trip to NorCal went.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:19:13 PM
Poor sanitation service, probably, plus it's in southern Italy 😇
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:19:37 PM
Hallo Rindarobb
Wal (host) 4:21:29 PM
What does the "it's southern Italy" mean?
Wal (host) 4:21:57 PM
Is there a big difference between Northern and Southern regions?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:25:26 PM
The south has, genetically, more blondes from way back to the days of the Vikings conquest of Sicily... In the North people tend to have darker hair...
Wal (host) 4:26:08 PM
VARZ coming in with an answer. Not sure if it's true, but it's an answer!
Wal (host) 4:26:16 PM
So, VARZ, I have been waiting patiently for the update on the VARZcation™
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:26:21 PM
I have not been there, but as you know, I'm pretty well educated about world history and especially the classics-- ancient Greece and Rome
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:26:49 PM
Just in a broad sense the hair color thing is true
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:27:01 PM
Wal, southern Italy has a reputation of being ... anarchic? lawless? 😇
Wal (host) 4:27:04 PM
So, VARZ, why might there be more vermin in one region over another?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:27:18 PM
VARZ! Hi!
Wal (host) 4:27:24 PM
RMD, I didn't know that. Interesting.
Rinda 4:27:47 PM
Rob that’s Southern California you are thinking of
Wal (host) 4:28:04 PM
Hahaha, RDA comes in with the truth.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:28:07 PM
No idea really...all cities have trouble with rats...even possums here in no America... I'm back from vacation since 2 Fridays ago
Wal (host) 4:28:21 PM
Well, how was the VARZcation?!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:28:28 PM
Did you see any condors?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:28:43 PM
Well...no no condors appeared
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:28:52 PM
Rinda, 🤣
Wal (host) 4:28:57 PM
Do you see any condos?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:29:03 PM
VARZ, bummer about the condors
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:29:19 PM
I saw cormorants, hawks, pigeons, seagulls, and even pelicans though
Ribbzz Robb 4:29:45 PM
Hey RDA and VARZ!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:29:47 PM
I can post some bird pics here if I can get img.bb to work on my phone
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:29:48 PM
VARZ, yay!!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:29:57 PM
Lemme try
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:32:36 PM
https://ibb.co/3W7Nb3Q
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:32:48 PM
There's some pelicans
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:07 PM
Saw them near Pebble Beach/17 mile drive
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:33:39 PM
In fact we felt an earthquake that day while lunching near the golf course
Ribbzz Robb 4:34:46 PM
The M5.1 San Jose quake
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:34:53 PM
Pelicans!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:35:15 PM
That's the one...also the last day of the trip I toured the USS Hornet..the 2nd aircraft carrier of WW2 in the US Navy
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:35:26 PM
Here she is:
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:36:19 PM
No link, VARZ
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:36:33 PM
Earthquakes!
Wal (host) 4:36:52 PM
Was the quake strong where you were?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:37:22 PM
Oh hey, do you know about the total lunar eclipse coming up on Tuesday morning before sunrise?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:37:27 PM
Wait does the link not work?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:37:34 PM
https://ibb.co/sy36cVZ
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:37:53 PM
Just copy and paste it into your web browser
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:38:05 PM
Use a new tab if you have to
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:38:39 PM
Yes I have heard about the eclipse election night here in CA... I hope it is a good omem
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:38:45 PM
Omen*
Ribbzz Robb 4:39:08 PM
How does the Hornet compare to the Midway?
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:39:40 PM
As for the quake-- yes we felt it because of the proximity... But fortunately it wasn't a 7+ so yah... Not too dangerous
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:40:08 PM
I've been aboard the Midway in San Diego years ago
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:40:28 PM
Total eclipse of the Moon before and/or during Tuesday dawn for most of North and Central America. The farther west you are, the higher the Moon will be and the longer the sky will remain fairly dark. Timetable: Partial eclipse begins at 1:09 a.m. Tuesday the 8th Pacific Standard Time; total eclipse begins 2:16 a.m. PST; mid-eclipse is at 2:59 a.m. PST; total eclipse ends 3:42 a.m. PST; partial eclipse ends 4:49 a.m. PST
Wal (host) 4:40:40 PM
Yeah, I think I toured the Midway years ago in SD as well
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:40:49 PM
VARZ it's election morning, Tuesday morning before sunrise, not election night
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:41:03 PM
I see the ship photo now
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:41:04 PM
The difference is history-- the Midway is more modern..the Hornet is the 12th carrier ever built for the USN
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:41:36 PM
It replaced the #8 one, sunk months beforehand, of the same name
Ribbzz Robb 4:41:53 PM
Unfortunately, the forecast is for rain Monday and Tuesday in So Cal...☹
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:42:34 PM
Also the 2nd Hornet was used to pick up Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts before being decommissioned in 1970
Wal (host) 4:42:39 PM
Some vibezzz are comin'
Wal (host) 4:42:48 PM
...for Ribbbzzzz
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:42:51 PM
Bummer about the rain. Here it should be clear, but of course it will be going on as it is getting lighter just before sunrise
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:43:04 PM
It's been a museum ship in the SF area since 1998
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:43:36 PM
Anyways yah...was a stellar vacation
Wal (host) 4:43:48 PM
Glad you had a nice time, VARZ!
Ribbzz Robb 4:43:53 PM
Thanks VARZ. The Hornet is on the "list." Been to the Midway
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:44:11 PM
Saw cool fish/otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:44:18 PM
That sounds like a nice vacation, VARZ
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:44:28 PM
Here's just one pic of a sheephead fish
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:44:31 PM
I hope to tour a carrier at some point
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:44:40 PM
Then I have to go out to dinner
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:44:55 PM
VARZ, I don't see a link for the sheephead
Wal (host) 4:45:19 PM
https://stock.adobe.com/search?k=sheep+head
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:45:45 PM
Wal, that link brings up sheep heads, not fish
Wal (host) 4:45:53 PM
Hahaha!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:46:05 PM
Yah sheephead is a species of fish
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:46:10 PM
https://ibb.co/pdf9Grq
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:46:28 PM
There's one in the tank...the deep sea tank
Ribbzz Robb 4:46:30 PM
Vibes for the Bell! Thanks Wal!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:46:57 PM
Might be turned 90 degrees but usually imgbb turns it right side up
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:47:11 PM
I see it now. Cool beasty!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:47:25 PM
That species is known for feeding in deep water
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:47:52 PM
When one is caught, usually the swim bladder come out of its mouth
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:48:13 PM
Because it has to be pulled to the surface from really deep
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:48:22 PM
We saw a fluffy white dog this afternoon with curly hair that almost looked like a sheep
Wal (host) 4:48:34 PM
Sorry folks, I'm just a jazz DJ. They don't pay me well enough to differentiate sheepheads from sheep heads.
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:48:41 PM
Not very good eating either....kind of a pity to kill one
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:48:45 PM
Loll
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:48:50 PM
Exactly!
Vice Admiral Robert Z 4:49:02 PM
Cya all in about 166 hours!!

Haha! That's true, RMD. No HOV lanes back in the 1950s.!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:53:24 PM

Wal (host) 4:53:29 PM
HOV lanes are now becoming toll lanes on some freeways
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:53:49 PM
Around here too
Ribbzz Robb 4:54:05 PM
Private Money seems to be the only way that they can be built.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:54:08 PM
They technically can't be freeways any more if you have to pay
Ribbzz Robb 4:55:37 PM
So True RMD. Sad part is that most folks can't afford the luxury of these roads
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:56:15 PM
RR, yup. And they require electronic equipment in your car
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 4:56:52 PM
Thanks for the show, Wal! Be careful when you see a sheep in the HOV lane!
Ribbzz Robb 4:57:05 PM
Have a super week RMD and RDA! Until next week, stay safe and have fun!
Wal (host) 4:57:11 PM
