I am a big fan of the summer. But winters, not so much. I don't like cold, snow, being wet, that sort of thing.

And with the time change comes the Spinitron goof up. Hits Boss Man every time with his Sunday night

And the limited daylight just adds to the unfun aspects of all things winter to me

Fortunatley, the "winters" in so cal aren't that bad

No, our winters are quite mild, comparatively speaking. I am very thankful for that.

I think I'd be more weather-hardened if I was not a native SoCal kid. But having lived here my entire life, I can't adjust to the conditions anywhere else!

Have you been birding plenty in this nice MD weather out there?

I have been birding a fair amount. My wife and I went on a field trip to a wetlands site near Baltimore last month, we led a field trip to a riverside location near DC, and there were two western warbler species in the area too.

That's great. Take advantage of the nice weather while you still can!

One warbler was at a birder's yard and was DC's first MacGillivray's Warbler. The other warbler was in Maryland near the Potomac River south of DC and was Maryland's 9th Black-throated Gray Warbler

RMD - What's the best way to determine a bird species based on its song? I've been hearing a bird at night recently that I don't recall hearing before.

Have you ever gone birding in some harsh weather? Or do you draw the line at a particular point?

Needless to say, I haven't seen too many of either species anywhere. Though my first MacGillivray's Warbler was in Cape May New Jersey just about 25 years ago!

Ribbzz, there is a free(?) app called Merlin, which I don't have on my flip phone, which is able to 'listen' to your environment and tell you what birds are there. Though it has thought a baby's sneeze was a heron ... it's certainly not perfect.

Wal, I've gone birding in tropical storm conditions, looking for tropical seabirds that get picked up from the open ocean by hurricanes, the latter of which weaken onshore and 'dump' various seabirds at inland lakes and rivers.

It's been a few nights, but it sounds like a low pitched whimper...

But if we have a lot of snow (or even a little), I stay home. I sometimes go out after overnight thunderstorms in spring or fall to see if migrating ducks or sandpipers have been forced down on water bodies or open fields respectively

Ribbzz, even if you don't hear that bird, it can identify others in your environs

Wal, yup. I've only done this in the DC area during such conditions but I have driven to the Delaware seashore after passage of a tropical storm which had weakened from a hurricane. You never know just what you and other birders will see

agree with Wal, it might not be a bird at all. You might want to check out Norway/Black Rat vocalizations if you are near to food establishments

Wal, I've never owned a camera. I do sketches and write notes if I actually discover a rare bird. Ofttimes when I'm one of 25 or 50 people, I'll just write "continuing bird" in my eBird notes. But again, sometimes I'll write a brief description of salient features.

It's always good to know what rats sound like. I learned their vocalization when I lived in Naples, Italy, and we weren't near a food establishment. They were kind of all over the place...

Never thought about rat songs (except maybe the band Rat.....)

How does the Hornet compare to the Midway?

As for the quake-- yes we felt it because of the proximity... But fortunately it wasn't a 7+ so yah... Not too dangerous

The difference is history-- the Midway is more modern..the Hornet is the 12th carrier ever built for the USN

It replaced the #8 one, sunk months beforehand, of the same name

Unfortunately, the forecast is for rain Monday and Tuesday in So Cal...☹

Also the 2nd Hornet was used to pick up Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts before being decommissioned in 1970

That species is known for feeding in deep water

When one is caught, usually the swim bladder come out of its mouth

Because it has to be pulled to the surface from really deep

We saw a fluffy white dog this afternoon with curly hair that almost looked like a sheep
