I remember reading a story, decades ago, that Mingus was impressed by a couple of aspects of Joni Mitchell's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, which paved the way for their collaboration on Mingus. One was that (his words) the orchestra was not in tune on Paprika Plains, and the other was that on the cover, Mitchell is portraying herself as a man. I'm sure there was more to it than that, but it sticks with me!

I saw Sharon Van Etten open for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in Denver sometime around 2013-14. I hadn't yet heard her music, and she was incredible, but so nervous that her voice shook. It endeared me to her :).
