Hex Enduction Hours
10:01 PM
The Fall - Mansion
The Fall Mansion
This Nation's Saving Grace Beggars Banquet 1985
10:03 PM
Dead Kennedys - Hop With the Jet Set
Dead Kennedys Hop With the Jet Set
Bedtime for Democracy Manifesto Records 1986

Fourth and final studio LP from one of my favorite (and yours, too!) 80s punk bands! Not enough is said about the connections between punk and art. DK wouldn't be DK without the band's collaboration with artist Winston Smith. Check out this short video by MOCA focusing on "The Art of Punk" highlighting the connection between the band and Smith:

10:05 PM
Iron Maiden - Flash of the Blade
Iron Maiden Flash of the Blade
Powerslave Parlophone UK 2015

Originally released in 1984. No surprise the lyrics focus on swordfighting, as frontman Bruce Dickinson is a fencer. This cut was later included on the soundtrack to the Dario Argento horror film Phenomena Also on said soundtrack: Sex Gang Children.

10:09 PM
AK-47 - Kiss My Machine
AK-47 Kiss My Machine
The Badge Means You Suck 7" Pineapple Records 1980

AK-47 were mostly active in the early 80s out of Houston. Politically charged lyrics, often attacking the local police force, led to several confrontations at local shows with the cops. "Kiss My Machine" is the B-side to the 1980 single "The Badge Means You Suck". The single is difficult to find and long out-of-print, though the band has made it available for download through its Bandcamp page.

10:13 PM
Black Flag - White Hot
Black Flag White Hot
In My Head SST Records 1985

Sixth and final studio LP from the Southern California hardcore punk act, delving even further into Greg Ginn's musical playground (apparently this was meant to be a Ginn solo album?). Like Dead Kennedys and Winston Smith, one can't talk about Black Flag without noting the collaborations with artist Raymond Pettibone. Here's MOCA, again:

10:23 PM
Cro-Mags - Seekers of the Truth
Cro-Mags Seekers of the Truth
The Age of Quarrel Cro Mag Recordings 2019

1986 debut LP from this NYC-based hardcore punk band. Because of the slight metal injections throughout, the band was sometimes cited as a crossover thrash band.

10:27 PM
Every Time I Die - We Go Together
Every Time I Die We Go Together N
Radical Epitaph 2021

Latest (and now final) album from this Buffalo, NY, crossover band. Sudden legal and personal issues splintered the band, hot on the heels of being recognized as having released a stand-out album in 2021.

10:32 PM
Melvins - Night Goat (Acoustic)
Melvins Night Goat (Acoustic) N
Five Legged Dog Ipecac Recordings / Liberator Music 2021

One of two albums released by Melvins last year, the other being Working With God. Here, Melvins find themselves revisiting their classics (plus favorites from other artists) and giving it all an acoustic twist, still with plenty of Melvins bite!

10:42 PM
Cloakroom - Dissembler
Cloakroom Dissembler N
Dissolution Wave Relapse Records 2022

Closing cut to the newest LP from the Northwest Indiana shoegaze inspired trio. A concept album of sorts (when incorporating the insert/cover/back) focused on a future Earth wiped out from a tragic physics accident.

10:48 PM
King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare
King Crimson One More Red Nightmare
Red (Expanded Edition) Discipline Global Mobile 2014

Penned mostly by bassist John Wetton (and he's on vocals, too), the cut is a surreal lyrical nightmare of a bloody plane crash. King Crimson would break up shortly before the commercial release of this album, which didn't sell but saw critical acclaim.

10:55 PM
Voivod - Planet Eaters
Voivod Planet Eaters N
Synchro Anarchy Century Media 2022

Latest from the Canadian genre-bending band. Heavy sci-fi elements throughout. I maintain Voivod should have received all the fame, acclaim, and money that Canadian counterparts Rush reaped.

11:02 PM
Can - Mushroom
Can Mushroom
Tago Mago Mute 2013

Originally released in 1971. First CAN album to feature Damo Suzuki on vocals. Depending on your interpretation, this song is either about an atomic detonation or psylocibin.

11:06 PM
A Place to Bury Strangers - I Disappear (When You're Near)
A Place to Bury Strangers I Disappear (When You're Near) N
See Through You Dedstrange 2022

Latest LP from this noisy NYC band! Will be playing at 191 Toole on May 16th as part of their "Let's See Each Other" tour.

11:10 PM
AMENRA - Het Gloren
AMENRA Het Gloren N
De Doorn Relapse Records 2021

Belgian doom metal! Enjoy.

11:25 PM
On the Wane - Alcohol
On the Wane Alcohol
Schism On the Wane 2017

Sonic Youth inspired tunage from this Ukrainian band. Hope they're all safe out there and can get back to making music in the future.

11:29 PM
Facs - Xout
Facs Xout N
Present Tense Trouble In Mind Records 2021

Latest release from this Chicago noise-rock band. Recorded at Stevel Albini's Electrical Audio studio (but not by Albini himself).

11:32 PM
Mogwai - Drive the Nail
Mogwai Drive the Nail
As the Love Continues Rock Action Records 2020

Latest release from the Scottish post-rock instrumentalists. Critics noted Mogwai mostly dispensed with long-drawn out pieces in favor of quicker bursts of releases. I dunno, that is what I read!

11:43 PM
Ride - Dreams Burn Down
Ride Dreams Burn Down
Nowhere (Expanded) Rhino/Warner Records 2001

Amazing early 90s shoegaze. What more do you want? What more do you need?

11:49 PM
Shoppers - Iii
Shoppers Iii
Silver Year Feeble Minds 2011

In-your-face three piece act from Syracuse, NY, with a noisy-edge to their post-punk sound.

11:52 PM
Tunic - Pores
Tunic Pores
Complexion Self Sabotage Records 2019

Canadian noise-rock and one of my faves from 2019!

I totally forgot today is St. Paddy's Day.
Norma Lipout 10:00:59 PM
Oh man, today is St Paddies? Well, this is when I found out.
Julio P. (host) 10:01:44 PM
I thought it was the Ides of March. Wish I were joking. And hello!
Bama Dan 10:01:52 PM
Hey.
Julio P. (host) 10:01:59 PM
Hi, old boy
Norma Lipout 10:02:38 PM
Hello Dan, Hello Julio!
Bama Dan 10:02:53 PM
Hello, Norma!
Bama Dan 10:04:27 PM
OMG, the DKs...
Norma Lipout 10:04:55 PM
Ahaha, excellent hard rock sound, true to life
Julio P. (host) 10:05:24 PM
I wish DH Peligro's drumming had greater appreciation
Bama Dan 10:06:57 PM
I can't think about the Dead Kennedys without seeing Jello covered in mayonnaise and diving into the crowd.
Julio P. (host) 10:07:22 PM
hahaha. also, how was Gang of FOur?
Bama Dan 10:08:18 PM
THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. Jon King is my new god. How can that man have so much energy?!?
Julio P. (host) 10:09:13 PM
Awesome.
Bama Dan 10:09:33 PM
They did so much stuff from their first three albums. I was awestruck.
Julio P. (host) 10:09:56 PM
I am low-key jealous
Norma Lipout 10:11:28 PM
Whoo, that had to have been exciting. I'll open up, I have never been to a concert...
Bama Dan 10:12:08 PM
He's my age, Julio...and yet he worked the crowd expertly. He was amazing.
Julio P. (host) 10:12:31 PM
Was it packed?
Bama Dan 10:12:44 PM
Norma...you really need to see live music. It's a different world!
Julio P. (host) 10:12:49 PM
Norma: no time like... later!
Bama Dan 10:13:41 PM
YES! Totally packed. And filled with young people, too! These people knew their old stuff...so inspiring!
Julio P. (host) 10:14:06 PM
There is still hope with these youth
Bama Dan 10:14:17 PM
I agree! I love it!
Norma Lipout 10:18:31 PM
I just don't even know where to begin with concerts, plus, I'm busy a lot of the time sadly. One day, one day
Norma Lipout 10:20:56 PM
Woo, all this hard rock makes me want some tea, going to go make myself a nice cup
Bama Dan 10:21:04 PM
Do you live in the Tucson area, Norma? There are a ton of shows that are coming to that area. They are announced throughout the day on KXCI...
Norma Lipout 10:22:43 PM
Yes, I am in the Tucson area. I'll keep an ear out then!
Julio P. (host) 10:24:47 PM
Mmm, tea.
Ed Kuklinski 10:25:56 PM
Mmm, beer
Julio P. (host) 10:26:09 PM
It's Ed!
Ed Kuklinski 10:26:34 PM
Hi y'all
Bama Dan 10:26:44 PM
Hi Ed!
Norma Lipout 10:27:10 PM
Hello Ed!
Ed Kuklinski 10:32:22 PM
Dan, you're right, there are lots of shows in Tucson, but there ain't much left of the punk rock scene, and no venue that caters it. Nevertheless, Norma, maybe a good 1st show would be Circle Jerks with Negative Approach and the Adolescents at the Rialto on June 25th? That would be one heck of a good start!
Julio P. (host) 10:32:56 PM
Just stay out of the pit.
Ed Kuklinski 10:33:11 PM
I'll be in the pit
Julio P. (host) 10:33:35 PM
hahaha
Bama Dan 10:34:03 PM
Oh wow...did not know about the Circle Jerks show!
Ed Kuklinski 10:36:30 PM
It's a reschedule from last year when one of their entourage got covid and they had to cancel. Can't wait!
Bama Dan 10:36:45 PM
Amazing that the Melvins are still making good music.
Julio P. (host) 10:37:30 PM
Talk about a band that is good at re-inventing itself. Kinda like Chris Jericho.
Norma Lipout 10:37:33 PM
Damn, I think I'll be out of town June 25th. Maybe my luck will change
Ed Kuklinski 10:37:39 PM
Yeah this is good
Ed Kuklinski 10:43:38 PM
Bad Religion is playing the Rialto on March 26, I have lots of respect but not a fan, there's this new LA band called Slaughterhouse opening for them, do you know of them, Julio? Can you play their song The Rat if so?
Norma Lipout 10:43:56 PM
Oooh, I like this song.
Julio P. (host) 10:43:58 PM
Not heard of 'em. I'll look 'em up
Julio P. (host) 10:44:20 PM
Norma: I can't recommend this album enough. Easily gonna make my Top Ten of 2021.
Norma Lipout 10:45:23 PM
I'll make sure to listen to the other songs on the album then, see what they got
Bama Dan 10:46:40 PM
Nice! Chicago area music!
Bama Dan 10:49:46 PM
Oh....and there's King Crimson. They're kind of cool, aren't they?
Julio P. (host) 10:50:03 PM
I love this album entirely.
Bama Dan 10:50:10 PM
OMG
Bama Dan 10:50:25 PM
Everything.
Norma Lipout 10:51:01 PM
Noticing plane songs, we had a plane song last week too, that's fun
Julio P. (host) 10:51:24 PM
You're right. Both about crashing. Major coincidence.
Julio P. (host) 10:51:39 PM
All Buddy Holly show next week, I guess
Bama Dan 10:52:40 PM
LOL, right, Julio. 😁
Ed Kuklinski 10:53:03 PM
Maybe Jim Croce too? Haha
Julio P. (host) 10:53:10 PM
hahahahaha
Julio P. (host) 10:53:24 PM
Throw some Bertie Higgins in the mix.
Bama Dan 10:53:34 PM
PLEASE.
Julio P. (host) 10:55:14 PM
Since you asked so politely....
Ed Kuklinski 10:56:58 PM
Wow, didn't know Voivod had a new one out, saw them in phx back in '15, they were awesome
Julio P. (host) 10:57:14 PM
And they still are!
Norma Lipout 11:09:09 PM
Ooh, enjoying this song as well. Starting to think I just really enjoy noisier rock.
Julio P. (host) 11:09:31 PM
That's the ticket! They'll be in Tucson in May....
Ed Kuklinski 11:10:33 PM
Might need to catch this show
Ed Kuklinski 11:14:45 PM
Pre-pandemic, were you getting out to shows at all, Julio? It's hard to believe we've never met in person
Julio P. (host) 11:15:46 PM
Occasionally. Trying to think of the last few shows I went to...
Julio P. (host) 11:16:31 PM
Swans at Congress. Melvins at 191 Toole. Nots, Cherubs, OFF!, also at Congress (different nights).
Julio P. (host) 11:18:37 PM
Surely some more I am forgetting.
Ed Kuklinski 11:21:01 PM
Damn didn't see any of those, saw OFF at the Rock but not Congress. Love Nots but think I found them after they played here
Julio P. (host) 11:25:56 PM
I'm sure we'll run into each other eventually. I'm making it a point not to miss an act if rolling through town.
Norma Lipout 11:28:55 PM
Aw man, trying to find this song to save somewhere, but I can't find it anywhere, not even their youtube has it
Julio P. (host) 11:29:35 PM
https://onthewane.bandcamp.com/track/alcohol
Ed Kuklinski 11:29:56 PM
you beat me to it, Julio, gonna buy it
Ed Kuklinski 11:37:47 PM
Norma, Bandcamp is a really good source for a lot of music, and they only take 15%, the rest goes straight to the band
Norma Lipout 11:43:59 PM
Ahaha, it's a pleasure!
jesse Konrad 11:44:05 PM
Sup lil minions ;)
Norma Lipout 11:44:15 PM
Hello Jesse!
Julio P. (host) 11:44:30 PM
Welcome, Jesse.
Ed Kuklinski 11:46:18 PM
Hi Jesse!
Julio P. (host) 11:56:07 PM
Hasta la proxima, amigos.
Norma Lipout 11:56:47 PM
