Hex Enduction Hours
9:59 PM
The Fall - Mansion
The Fall Mansion
This Nation's Saving Grace Beggars Banquet 1985

Back at it.

10:02 PM
Loop - Interference
Loop Interference N
Sonancy Cooking Vinyl Limited 2022

Noisy space-rock English band LOOP has released its latest album following a three decade hiatus! From the get-go, this LP has LOOP picking up where it left off with 1990's Gilded Eternity.

10:06 PM
My Bloody Valentine - Cupid Come
My Bloody Valentine Cupid Come
Isn't Anything Rhino/Warner Records 1988

Debut LP from THE shoegaze band. One of two songs on this LP written by drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig.

10:11 PM
The Flaming Lips - Mountain Side
The Flaming Lips Mountain Side
In a Priest Driven Ambulance Rykodisc 1987

Before collaborating with Miley Cyrus, these Okies were dropping acid and delivering slabs of noisy pop-rock. Early member included Jonathan Donahue, who would go on to greater fame with Mercury Rev. Mercury Rev will be special opening act for The Brian Jonestown Massacre at the Rialto Theatre on Monday, April 25th.

10:17 PM
Ringo Deathstarr - Burn
Ringo Deathstarr Burn
Mauve Vinyl Junkie Recordings 2012

Modern shoegaze by way of Texas. Yes, the band's name is a combination of a Beatle and Star Wars. Nerds.

10:24 PM
Swervedriver - Harry and Maggie
Swervedriver Harry and Maggie
Mezcal Head Sony BMG Music UK 1993

English alt-rock band commonly lumped into the shoegaze genre, but their sound also blended elements of pop, psych, and even straight-up classic rock influence. This - the band's second studio LP - was originally released in 1993 on Creation Records... hence the shoegaze association.

10:32 PM
Cloakroom - A Force at Play
Cloakroom A Force at Play N
Dissolution Wave Relapse Records 2022

Newest LP by the Northwest Indiana shoegaze inspired trio. A concept album of sorts (when incorporating the insert/cover/back) focused on a future Earth wiped out from a tragic physics accident. With every listen to this album, I discover something new: a riff, a dynamic, a mood. Easily 2022 Top Ten material!

10:35 PM
Medicine - Defective
Medicine Defective
Shot Forth Self Living American Recordings Catalog P&D 1991

Early 90s Los Angeles-based noise rock band formed by former Savage Republic drummer Brad Laner. This was the band's debut LP, which led lyrics to call Medicine America's version of My Bloody Valentine. And who can live up to those expectations? Didn't seem to bother Medicine, as the band would release six more albums through the next three decades.

10:44 PM
Young Prisms - Yourside
Young Prisms Yourside N
Drifter Fire Talk 2022

Newest release from this San Francisco band that seamlessly combines dream-pop and rock. Beaitufl cuts throughout, including this one.

10:48 PM
Boris - Beyond Good and Evil
Boris Beyond Good and Evil N
W Sacred Bones Records 2022

Latest 27th release (or so) from the experimental Japanese noise rock legends. Much more contemplative side of the band, the work itself a reflection on the state of the world making its way through this pandemic.

10:52 PM
Jesu - Silver
Jesu Silver
Silver - EP Avalanche Recordings 2016

Jesu is the brainchild of Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death and Godflesh fame). Broadrick describes Jesu as "very loosely speaking pop/rock/metal/electronica. I'm intentionally writing what I consider to be coherent 'pop' songs."

11:01 PM
Catherine Wheel - She's My Friend
Catherine Wheel She's My Friend
Ferment Island Mercury 1992

More 90s shoegazey stuff from England. FUN FACT: Catherine Wheel found Rob Dickinson is cousin to Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame.

11:05 PM
A Place to Bury Strangers - Smile When You Smile
A Place to Bury Strangers Smile When You Smile
Exploding Head Mute, a BMG Company 2009

Second studio album from the self-proclaimed "loudest band in New York." Will be playing in Tucson Monday, May 16th, as part of their 2022 "Let's See Each Other Tour". Released a new LP in February, See Through You, which we've heard here on this show!

11:10 PM
The Jesus and Mary Chain - In a Hole
The Jesus and Mary Chain In a Hole
Psychocandy WM UK 1985

Can't have a noise themed show without TJAMC. Debut LP inspired by Phil Spector's signature Wall of Sound production. Original drummer Bobby Gillespie would go on to found Primal Scream.

11:13 PM
Dinosaur Jr. - Sludgefeast
Dinosaur Jr. Sludgefeast
You're Living All Over Me Baked Goods 1987

This band could be your life.

11:23 PM
Cherubs - Die Robbin'
Cherubs Die Robbin' N
SLO BLO 4 FRNZ & SXY Relapse Records 2021

Latest release from the Austin-based noise rock band!

11:27 PM
Destruction Unit - Animal Instinct
Destruction Unit Animal Instinct L
Negative Feedback Resistor Sacred Bones Records 2015

2015 release from this Phoenix-based band, and my top album of 2015, as I wrote HERE:

Phoenix’s Destruction Unit deliver another psychotropic fueled blast of noise meant to do nothing but make you lose your senses in a deafening haze. Opener “Disinfect” begins with a low hum slowly building upward. But before you can settle in, an ear-splitting note kicks. This isn’t a wall of sound surrounding you. Those walls have already collapsed. This is – to borrow from the subsequent track – salvation, meant to liberate you from boring musical restrictions you unknowingly box yourself into. You’ll be unrestrained by the end of “Animal Instinct”, with its pulsating beat cascading into a wail and rumble. There’s no turning back at this point for the uninitiated. They’re trapped. The rest of us? We’ll be in noise-rock heaven.

11:35 PM
Sonic Youth - (She's in A) Bad Mood
Sonic Youth (She's in A) Bad Mood
Confusion Is Sex / Kill Yr. Idols Squeaky Squawk 2012

Confusion Is Sex, originally released in 1983, marked the debut LP by NYC's Sonic Youth, with this cut being the album opener. SY were influenced by the NYC No Wave scene that preceded them, Glenn Branca being a major influence on SY's guitar sound.

11:45 PM
Glenn Branca - Light Field (In Consonance)
Glenn Branca Light Field (In Consonance)
The Ascension Systems Neutralizers 1981

No discussion of noise rock is complete without fully acknowledging the contribution made by late 70s No Wave acts. Dissonance and atonality were hallmarks of the genre, itself a counter-reaction to punk rock. Glenn Branca's band Theoretical Girls contributed to the genre, and he would explore noisy, sonic territory in his amazing solo albums. Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth contributed to this recording (pre-Sonic Youth).

11:53 PM
The Jesus Lizard - Deaf As a Bat
The Jesus Lizard Deaf As a Bat
Lash - EP Touch and Go Records 1993

You're probably deaf as a bat following tonight's slab of noise!
