Stretchin' out the tunes!

Hex Enduction Hours
10:01 PM
The Fall - Mansion
The Fall Mansion
This Nation's Saving Grace Beggars Banquet 1985

Brace yourselves.

10:03 PM
Earthless - Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons, Pt. 2
Earthless Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons, Pt. 2 N
Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons Nuclear Blast 2022

Soaring instrumental release from this trock trio. Entire album - from artwork to music - inspired by the Japanese folklore/art of Hyakki Yagyō, which tells of supernatural creatures that cause pandemonium. This cut is the second of three pieces that make up this LP. Reminds you of King Crimson?

10:28 PM
Sleep - The Druid
Sleep The Druid
Sleep's Holy Mountain Earache Records 1992

Influential stoner rock band from California. This is the band's second studio LP and was performed in its entirety at 2009's All Tomorrow's Parties festival.

10:33 PM
Voivod - Quest for Nothing
Voivod Quest for Nothing N
Synchro Anarchy Century Media 2022

Latest release (and 15th overall) from the Canadian prog metal band. Heavy sci-fi elements throughout, as marks much of Voivod's work. I prefer them to Rush.

10:39 PM
Melvins - Civilized Worm
Melvins Civilized Worm
(A) Senile Animal Ipecac Recordings 2006

Another 15th studio LP, this from the still-active Melvins. Following the departure of bassist Kevin Rutmanis, Dale Crover and King Buzzo connected with the bombastic Big Business on this release, featuring the power of two drummers! The Melvins will be playing at Club Congress on Saturday, June 18th!

10:48 PM
Electric Wizard - Weird Tales / Electric Frost / Golgotha / Altar of Melektaus
Electric Wizard Weird Tales / Electric Frost / Golgotha / Altar of Melektaus
Dopethrone Rise Above Limited 2006

On this, the English stoner/doom/sludge metal band's third studio LP, Electric Wizard leaned heavily into its horror and drug influences (both real and imaginary) to create what ended up becoming a masterpiece in the genre, despite their best efforts at creating a foul album. GG Allin this ain't!

11:02 PM
Blood Incantation - EA
Blood Incantation EA N
Timewave Zero Century Media 2022

You wouldn't know it from this release (though the band's name may give it away), but Blood Incantation is a death metal band from Denver, CO, heard here dialing it back quite a way. In doing so, they've created an ambient, almost 80s cinematic album that stands as several musical movements. "EA" is actually four movements, heard here it is entirety.

11:24 PM
Laurie Anderson - O Superman (For Massenet)
Laurie Anderson O Superman (For Massenet)
Big Science Warner Bros. 1982

Big hit for experimental songwriter for this English songwriter from this debut LP, heavily pushed by influential BBC programmer John Peel. Fans of the tech sci-fi show Black Mirror will recognize this cut from the "true" ending to the choose-your-own-adventure film Bandersnatch. My 5 year-old demands I play this all the time.

11:33 PM
Kraftwerk - Radioactivity
Kraftwerk Radioactivity
Radio-Activity (Remastered) Parlophone UK 2009

Originally release in 1975, this marks the only single released from Kraftwerk's fifth studio LP. A concept album (as many Kraftwerk releases were) about radiowaves and related concepts. Takes me back to early "Hex Enduction Hours" epsidoes/shows.

11:39 PM
Sonic Youth - Basement Contender
Sonic Youth Basement Contender N
In/Out/In Three Lobed Recordings 2022
Song #9...

Julio P. (host) 9:55:05 PM
Let's see what tonight brings...
Bama Dan 10:01:11 PM
The Rutles?
Julio P. (host) 10:01:43 PM
You don't know The Rutles?
Bama Dan 10:01:44 PM
Seriously, the delay is like this: just now, "Hey Bulldog" is starting to play.
Julio P. (host) 10:01:59 PM
dang that is some delay!
Bama Dan 10:02:08 PM
Julio, of COURSE I know the Rutles. I love them!
Julio P. (host) 10:02:12 PM
hahaha
Bama Dan 10:02:16 PM
lol
Julio P. (host) 10:02:18 PM
I figured but...
Bama Dan 10:02:43 PM
Yeah, it's like 4 minutes!
Bama Dan 10:02:51 PM
The delay!
Julio P. (host) 10:04:16 PM
You're living in the future but listening to the past. Crazy!
Bama Dan 10:06:07 PM
I'm constantly looking at the KXCI playlist and thinking "this is in the past...wait! It's in the future!"
Julio P. (host) 10:06:22 PM
What is time, even?
Bama Dan 10:06:28 PM
Exactly.
Bama Dan 10:07:05 PM
Anyway, can we dedicate the entire show to John Tesh? I'm feeling romantic.
Julio P. (host) 10:07:20 PM
The guy that sang the NBA theme?
Julio P. (host) 10:07:44 PM
or wrote it anyway
Bama Dan 10:08:34 PM
I'm just looking for some sappy keyboard playing and some relationship advice.
Julio P. (host) 10:10:29 PM
oh boy tonight is definitely not that kind of show
Bama Dan 10:10:36 PM
No...
Bama Dan 10:11:33 PM
So...Earthless. Dig their sound. What is their setup? Bass, drums and guitar?
Julio P. (host) 10:12:52 PM
Yup, classic set up. No frills, all thrills. Or something
Bama Dan 10:17:39 PM
This doesn't remind me of Crimson, but it does remind me of some other effort...it will come to me eventually. Really loving the drum parts.
Julio P. (host) 10:18:26 PM
Really? I recall you mentioned Pt. 1 reminding you of Crimson when I played that earlier this year. haha
Bama Dan 10:19:01 PM
Ha ha!
Bama Dan 10:20:38 PM
This does remind me of some of the prog stuff I used to listen to, but not Crimson. For example, the lead guitar is definitely not Fripp.
Norma Lipout 10:21:34 PM
Is tonight really gonna be 9 songs, no more, no less?
Norma Lipout 10:21:44 PM
Also, Hi Dan! Hey Julio!
Julio P. (host) 10:21:59 PM
Hi, Norma. I ain't joking. Unless time has other plans...
Julio P. (host) 10:22:23 PM
And I am not counting the opening number I play on every show
Bama Dan 10:22:56 PM
The comments made earlier this year were obviously made from my evil Bama Dan II twin. :-/
Julio P. (host) 10:23:02 PM
hahaha
Bama Dan 10:23:06 PM
Hi Norma!
Julio P. (host) 10:23:28 PM
Did he have an evil twirly moustache?
Bama Dan 10:24:08 PM
Mos def
Norma Lipout 10:28:40 PM
Also, due to all my listening from this show, I got recommended "Hamburger Lady" from Throbbing Gristle- not fun to listen to at night, let me tell you
Bama Dan 10:29:10 PM
Oh...?
Julio P. (host) 10:29:13 PM
hahahaha yeah, throbbing grsitle, nurse with wound, all that late 70s/early 80s electro-industrial stuff makes for uneasy late night listening
Julio P. (host) 10:30:09 PM
The Brits, I tell ya. Then you get even spookier with some 80s German stuff
Julio P. (host) 10:30:38 PM
But the real unsettling stuff comes from Sun City Girls
Bama Dan 10:33:20 PM
Well, I saw a request for "Hamburger Lady" made on another KXCI program, Norma, but I wasn't sure if this translated to a "personal request". :-)
Julio P. (host) 10:33:37 PM
what program?
Bama Dan 10:33:53 PM
Maybe THS?
Julio P. (host) 10:33:59 PM
haha
Norma Lipout 10:36:25 PM
Oh, that wasn't me, it was in my youtube recommendations , and I made the misfortune of listening to it at midnight, right before bed.
Norma Lipout 10:36:45 PM
I'll have to check out sun city girls then! Just maybe during the day.
Julio P. (host) 10:36:50 PM
I shouldn't be laughing about that
Bama Dan 10:37:17 PM
Nor I. Julio's programming is scary enough. :-D
Julio P. (host) 10:37:33 PM
Sun City Girls isn't spooky, per se. It can be quite chill, heavily influenced by world music. Just gives me the creeps for some reason. Like seeing people play with stickers while I eat
Julio P. (host) 10:37:41 PM
haha, thanks, Dan
Bama Dan 10:38:05 PM
LOL. I'm such a fan. :-)
Julio P. (host) 10:38:43 PM
Ya gotta be to up so late in Alabama, which I appreciate
Norma Lipout 10:38:53 PM
Ahaha, H.L gave me the creeps, but I do enjoy the "shivers up the spine" feeling
Bama Dan 10:39:00 PM
Guilty.
Norma Lipout 10:39:42 PM
After that, I read a review of the song where the reviewer's computer broke at the end of the song, and then the power shut off a second later. Hope that was a real story
Julio P. (host) 10:40:02 PM
Sounds like a creepypasta
Norma Lipout 10:43:13 PM
Doesn't it?
Julio P. (host) 10:43:46 PM
Does it beat the Russian Sleep Experiment? I dunno
Bama Dan 10:45:12 PM
Scary story, Norma! 😬
Bama Dan 10:47:07 PM
Meanwhile, really digging this Melvins tune...will they be featuring two drummers on their upcoming gig at Club Congress?
Julio P. (host) 10:48:07 PM
Naw, that was during that 2006/07 stretch. Last two times I saw them it was just the trio.
Bama Dan 10:48:34 PM
Too bad. This is golden.
Julio P. (host) 10:49:06 PM
"(A) Senile Animal" is easily in my Top 4 Melvins LPs
Julio P. (host) 10:49:13 PM
Top 5, too!
Bama Dan 10:54:27 PM
My brother...skate punk who's into Big Boys and The Dicks...WAY into GG Allin.
Julio P. (host) 10:54:47 PM
hahaha
Bama Dan 10:54:55 PM
Right?
Mohamad Jafar 11:00:08 PM
Better late than never!
Mohamad Jafar 11:01:18 PM
Oh damn GG allin....
Mohamad Jafar 11:01:50 PM
Man I was in a record store one time in Tempe and the owner said he got calls from GG back in the 70s and he mailed letters and promos back and forth
Bama Dan 11:02:39 PM
When your dad is familiar with GG Allin, and uses it as an everyday expression, you know your family has transitioned.
Mohamad Jafar 11:02:44 PM
Wow
Mohamad Jafar 11:03:03 PM
My childhood best friend introduced me to GG allin and his performancesd
Julio P. (host) 11:03:25 PM
Hi Mohamad, thanks for stopping by
Mohamad Jafar 11:03:41 PM
For sure Julio, I slept last week and just got around to tuning in
Julio P. (host) 11:03:53 PM
haha, I get it
Mohamad Jafar 11:04:06 PM
This sounds amazing
Bama Dan 11:05:15 PM
Quite a remarkable set tonight, Julio. Nicely done.
Norma Lipout 11:05:22 PM
Yea, was gonna say, really liking this one
Mohamad Jafar 11:05:24 PM
Very much so :)
Mohamad Jafar 11:06:03 PM
I just picked up some great viynl, black in black, electric larryland, rainbow, heart, the beatles
Julio P. (host) 11:06:38 PM
Thanks, Dan. Some of these cuts have been linked in my head. Just had to figure out when/how to put them all together
Mohamad Jafar 11:07:00 PM
I am going to show this to my friend who dj's at raves and see what he thinks
Mohamad Jafar 11:07:18 PM
this being the song thats currently playing. sounds so 80s
Julio P. (host) 11:07:33 PM
For a rave? Maybe on the comedown trip
Bama Dan 11:07:41 PM
LOL
Mohamad Jafar 11:08:01 PM
Not for a rave haha. showing new music
Julio P. (host) 11:08:33 PM
ahh ok that makes more sense
Bama Dan 11:08:49 PM
I dunno, Mohamad...some of this is timeless to me...not so much "the 80s"...
Mohamad Jafar 11:09:23 PM
I hear a lot of synth and recently I discovered Italo Disco and I think its that
Julio P. (host) 11:09:26 PM
See, reminds me very much of John Carpenter's 80s film scores.
Mohamad Jafar 11:10:05 PM
This stuff reminds me of another composer, one not from my time but Giorgio moroder
Bama Dan 11:11:21 PM
I get it, and I loved the music from back in that day, but this is different to me. To each our own. :-)
Mohamad Jafar 11:11:35 PM
I respect that
Mohamad Jafar 11:11:55 PM
I like how you're liking the newer stuff
Bama Dan 11:12:08 PM
Word.
Mohamad Jafar 11:12:19 PM
I listen to a lot of older stuff but have been digging newer stuff thanks to Julio's amazing lists
Julio P. (host) 11:13:06 PM
Imma drop some more new stuff next week. In the traditional punk/post-punk vein as we do on the show. Tongiht was something special
Julio P. (host) 11:13:34 PM
And, no, I am not playing long cuts so I can use the bathroom
Julio P. (host) 11:14:21 PM
Although I did get a random caller asking me to drop him some "rock and roll trivia". Way to put me on the spot!
Julio P. (host) 11:14:40 PM
So if you are out there, Carlos, hello!
Mohamad Jafar 11:15:03 PM
I am happy to say this song has been quite the experience, just downloaded the four movements haha.
Bama Dan 11:15:19 PM
Well then...we all thought you were doing it because you just wanted more breaks to play Fortnite and get high...
Julio P. (host) 11:15:31 PM
what am I, 16?
Mohamad Jafar 11:15:39 PM
Hahaha
Bama Dan 11:15:52 PM
Hahahaha...
Mohamad Jafar 11:16:03 PM
Good one :)
Bama Dan 11:18:21 PM
OK...so earlier I said "not Crimson". But now, , this is a cross between Moody Blues and Floyd.
Julio P. (host) 11:18:30 PM
hahahaha
Mohamad Jafar 11:18:43 PM
I agree with that statement high as fuck hahahaha
Julio P. (host) 11:19:04 PM
I can hear the Floyd. Still think John Carpenter
Mohamad Jafar 11:19:45 PM
I need to get this on viynl now
Julio P. (host) 11:19:54 PM
Bet it sounds better that way
Norma Lipout 11:20:31 PM
I can hear the John Carpenter, I think I agree with Julio
Mohamad Jafar 11:20:42 PM
Zia has some Julio :)
Norma Lipout 11:21:11 PM
Plus, I love John Carpenter. Watched "The Thing" a week ago- though I know that one is not scored by him, but it is in his style
Julio P. (host) 11:21:33 PM
Mohamad: that's where I got my copy
Mohamad Jafar 11:21:37 PM
Nice
Mohamad Jafar 11:21:43 PM
Ill have to get mine
Mohamad Jafar 11:22:58 PM
Are any pedals used in making this? Those who speak Guitar haha
Julio P. (host) 11:24:57 PM
no idea
Mohamad Jafar 11:25:43 PM
Midnight Hour? Billy Idol?
Bama Dan 11:26:02 PM
Well done, Julio.
Norma Lipout 11:26:35 PM
Oh, Laurie Anderson! Love her stuff
Julio P. (host) 11:26:46 PM
So when I put these shows together, the whole point is that you can listen to it all as one flowing set without the breaks.
Mohamad Jafar 11:26:49 PM
This is something wow
Norma Lipout 11:28:47 PM
Julio's played her stuff before and it's always a treat
Bama Dan 11:31:03 PM
I loved seeing her live in Los Angeles. "United States". 1983, or 1984?
Julio P. (host) 11:32:03 PM
I would've been at that show, if, ya know, I wasn't in the process of being born
Bama Dan 11:32:26 PM
Sorry, Julio. Can't be helped.
Julio P. (host) 11:32:36 PM
haha
Bama Dan 11:32:47 PM
😆
Mohamad Jafar 11:33:11 PM
Julio did you listen to Skywave
Julio P. (host) 11:33:26 PM
Not yet. I have a note in my pocket to do so
Mohamad Jafar 11:33:51 PM
they are 2/3 of a place to bury strangers
Mohamad Jafar 11:34:44 PM
Kraftwerk are on tour!!
Norma Lipout 11:34:51 PM
Enjoying this part with the beeping and piano(?)
Norma Lipout 11:35:51 PM
I have a soft spot for non instrument sounds in my music. Scissor snips, hammer sounds, thread tearing, feedback . It's all good!
Bama Dan 11:36:23 PM
I love that, Norma!
Mohamad Jafar 11:36:27 PM
Same norma, i love me some instrumental, I have a keyboard I have fun with every once in a while
Mohamad Jafar 11:36:38 PM
Im a huge synth/sound fan
Bama Dan 11:36:56 PM
Btw, I am just now reaching the end of Laurie Anderson...
Julio P. (host) 11:37:00 PM
Great observation, Norma. I feel the same
Mohamad Jafar 11:37:17 PM
I wish kraftwerk added arizona to their tour
Mohamad Jafar 11:37:59 PM
https://kraftwerk.com/concerts/index-concerts.html
Julio P. (host) 11:40:55 PM
Pretty sure they released another remix album this year, too
Mohamad Jafar 11:43:40 PM
Always thought Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth was a 90s album but it was released in 88
Julio P. (host) 11:44:28 PM
Definitely previewed the sound they'd take on in the 90s
Mohamad Jafar 11:44:37 PM
100%
Julio P. (host) 11:44:59 PM
That is a great Sonic Youth tune
Mohamad Jafar 11:45:37 PM
which
Julio P. (host) 11:45:48 PM
100%
Norma Lipout 11:46:25 PM
This song is a nice one to end on, nice and chill
Mohamad Jafar 11:46:26 PM
oh yeah it is i meant 100% agree to your statement of "Definitely previewed the sound they'd take on in the 90s" but maybe the song too
Julio P. (host) 11:46:54 PM
Norma: After that Electric Wizard and Earthless bombardment...
Julio P. (host) 11:47:10 PM
haha mohamad, just pulling your leg
Bama Dan 11:47:25 PM
Surprised you would feature a new Sonic Youth compilation, Julio, but I get it. :-)
Julio P. (host) 11:47:36 PM
How so, Dan?
Bama Dan 11:48:08 PM
It's not classic, but it's a tasty choice. That's all.
Julio P. (host) 11:48:25 PM
I get ya
Norma Lipout 11:54:40 PM
nigh all!
Julio P. (host) 11:54:41 PM
Well, that's all she wrote
Mohamad Jafar 11:54:48 PM
Nighty!
Norma Lipout 11:54:54 PM
Night all! Sorry, typo
Mohamad Jafar 11:55:00 PM
Thanks everyone
Norma Lipout 11:55:03 PM
A pleasure, as always
Julio P. (host) 11:55:35 PM
Appreciate you all
Bama Dan 11:56:22 PM
"It's a little startling"...how cool is that? :-D
Bama Dan 11:56:36 PM
Thanks, Julio.
Julio P. (host) 11:56:42 PM
The boy surprises me in good ways
Julio P. (host) 11:57:03 PM
Like sleeping through Napalm Death WTH
