Aroma of the creosote, indeed. Thanks so much to Chezale for this morning monsoon music.
Cheron (host) 8:02:30 AM
Good morning, friends!
Bama Dan 8:04:36 AM
Good morning, Cheron! Excellent opener...I'm homesick!
Cheron (host) 8:05:58 AM
Buenos dias, Dan! Feels--I am also a lover of two cities. Does the I-10 go through your town?
Bama Dan 8:07:09 AM
No, it goes along...well, closer to...the Gulf Coast in this part of the country. So it goes through Mobile, about 350 miles to the south.
Cheron (host) 8:08:13 AM
Oh, dang. That's a hop and a skip.
Bama Dan 8:09:56 AM
:-) The last trip I made to Tucson, it was about a 3 days' drive. Not too bad!
Cheron (host) 8:10:16 AM
As a friend told me when I left town for a spell,
Cheron (host) 8:10:34 AM
Tucson's not going anywhere--it'll be here when you return! ;)
Bama Dan 8:10:59 AM
Love it!
Cheron (host) 8:14:12 AM
🏜️💓
Tony Hall 8:16:34 AM
I never noticed how Peter Gabriel kinda-sorta borrowed from the intro from this song for “Solsbury Hill.”
richard johnson 8:16:39 AM
Good morning, friends! I thought I was going to be streaming from I-10 between Houston and New Orleans, but I woke up feeling off so we’re playing it safe and staying here for now.
Bama Dan 8:18:16 AM
Morning, Richard!
Cheron (host) 8:18:23 AM
Welcome, Richard. I hope you feel right as rain as fast as possible 💜. Love and healing from radioland.
richard johnson 8:19:18 AM
Thanks, y’all. I suspect that the Cafe will be the chicken soup that I need!
Bama Dan 8:19:50 AM
Yes, feel better soon!
Bama Dan 8:21:54 AM
Speaking of covers, I see where Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee have released a couple of tunes on Bandcamp: Broadcast's Tears in the Typing Pool and a Guided By Voices cover as well.
Cheron (host) 8:29:00 AM
Nice pick-up, Dan! Thanks so much for that. I'll cruise over to bandcamp today for sure. I hadn't heard of those!
Bama Dan 8:37:01 AM
What movie had an elevator scene where Faith's A Summer Place was playing? Was it the Blues Brothers?
richard johnson 8:37:23 AM
I was just trying to remember that!
richard johnson 8:37:38 AM
Airplane?
richard johnson 8:39:08 AM
Animal House?
Bama Dan 8:39:54 AM
Yeah, I think it was Animal House...
richard johnson 8:42:43 AM
Looks like it was used in a lot of movies. Also Monty Python. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theme_from_A_Summer_Place#In_popular_culture
Cheron (host) 8:43:48 AM
I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen Animal House. Still, I'd wager that song was used in a slow-motion scene? I also think it was used in a remake of one of the Romero Zombie movies--Dawn of the Dead, maybe?
Cheron (host) 8:45:47 AM
Your reference is much better 🤣.
Bama Dan 8:45:57 AM
LOL
Bama Dan 8:47:02 AM
I haven't seen BBs or Animal House in decades. *And* Dawn of the Dead! 😁
richard johnson 8:48:29 AM
OMG, this cover of Benny and the Jets… this is hysterical.
Bama Dan 8:51:18 AM
"And I was singing every rock song, and they were buggin’ out. I was singin’ like [sings], ‘Jeremiah was a Bullfrog’ and singin’ all them records, right? So people was buggin’ out, and they broke down ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ and I sang it."
Bama Dan 8:51:34 AM
It's hilarious!
Cheron (host) 8:51:44 AM
It's so funny, and now poignant. I meant to play it last week for Biz Markie's bday!
Cheron (host) 8:52:13 AM
omg, thanks for looking that up, Dan. So cool.
Bama Dan 8:52:58 AM
You're welcome, Cheron, but thanks for playing...I was totally unaware of this track!
richard johnson 8:55:43 AM
You know, Bennie and the Jets was cool enough to be performed on Soul Train. Elton was dressed up like a leprechaun.
Cheron (host) 8:56:10 AM
Wut.
Cheron (host) 8:56:20 AM
Pics or it didn't happen, haha.

richard johnson 8:57:13 AM
Oh happen it did, for realz.
Bama Dan 8:57:18 AM
Yeah, Tyina said something about this appearance on Soul Stories, but I didn't remember the leprechaun part!
Bama Dan 8:58:20 AM
OMG.
Cheron (host) 8:58:30 AM
Well, that's amazing.
Bama Dan 9:00:30 AM
I have a craving now for Lucky Charms.
David Russell 9:01:06 AM
Wow Cheron. Inspired playlist. Thanks.
Cheron (host) 9:05:44 AM
That is so kind and appreciated, David. Thank you for listening! 💃🏽
richard johnson 9:06:32 AM
Dan, I could totally see the Lucky Charms guy singing “Tiny Dancer”

At some point on the chat this morning, I want to shout out to DJ El Toro and his new Friday evening show "Inside/Out". Like SMC, the connections he explores are fascinating.
Cheron (host) 9:16:40 AM
David, I blew out the speakers in my first car within days, and one of my eardrums before I was 25, so I've been an avowed speaker luddite for forever.
richard johnson 9:17:38 AM
‘The Last Time’ might be my father’s favorite song. I always think of him when I hear it.
Cheron (host) 9:17:44 AM
YES! I was so sad not to get to hear it last night. I'm definitely going to catch it in the archive this weekend--so cool!
Cheron (host) 9:18:48 AM
Aww, geez. Shout out to the formative music of our parents.
Bama Dan 9:19:15 AM
Yes, so cool! He did a Bob Crewe set that closed with Divine's version of Walk Like a Man. Awesome.
Bama Dan 9:19:54 AM
Well...second to last...lol
richard johnson 9:20:09 AM
Holy cow, blew out your car speakers?! There was a chat a few days ago on The Home Stretch about concerts that caused one to lose hearing….
David Russell 9:20:12 AM
Ha. Right, stereo gear is an old guy thing. Still miss my old Marantz amp...
richard johnson 9:20:45 AM
Respect for Marantz!
David Russell 9:22:05 AM
Roger that! Thanks, fellow old guy!
richard johnson 9:29:04 AM
Pylon! I 100% love this song!
Cheron (host) 9:30:03 AM
I was gifted the vinyl box set last year, and I'm still so excited, lol.
Bama Dan 9:31:22 AM
richard johnson 9:31:43 AM
Oh my, the Pylon Box! You have a very thoughtful gift giver!
Cheron (host) 9:33:41 AM
Indeed! I was moping around the house lamenting that it was sold out, and it turns out my vinyl fairy had already made plans 😝.
richard johnson 9:35:55 AM
You chose your vinyl fairy well!
Cheron (host) 9:36:37 AM
I discovered Pylon well into adulthood, so it was a long time before I realized that the R.E.M. tune, "Crazy" that I loved so much was actually a cover.
Cheron (host) 9:37:17 AM
Evidently, Pylon opened for R.E.M. for a few dates on their Green album tour.
richard johnson 9:38:34 AM
My wife got to sing with Pylon briefly, in that they played Houston and she was up front and the singer spontaneously held the mic up to my wife to sing “Beep Beep” at the appropriate moment. I wasn’t there… I was at a Jello Biafra show that night. Divide and conquer.
Cheron (host) 9:42:41 AM
Holy cow! Now THAT is a cool story. Divide and conquer, indeed!
Bama Dan 9:42:58 AM
Great story, Richard!
richard johnson 9:49:03 AM
I always felt like in retrospect that I went to the wrong show that night. Biafra returned, but Pylon split shortly thereafter.
Bama Dan 9:51:02 AM
Thanks for playing Spinning Away, Cheron! One of my first exposures to "prog rock" in the mid 70s - or at least something other than mainstream - was the live album "June 1, 1974", with Eno, Cale, Nico, and Kevin Ayers. One of the foundational moments in my own musical journey!
Cheron (host) 9:53:58 AM
Thanks for that memory, Dan! Talk about unassailably good record.
richard johnson 9:54:29 AM
Today’s edition of the Cafe goes in the Cheron hall of fame. The show is always good, but today’s show was SPECTACULAR. I have been smiling for two hours straight. Thanks, Cheron!! And be well, Dan! I hope I didn’t distract too much on the chat!
Bama Dan 9:55:16 AM
Not at all, Richard! And you, too...get well very soon!
Cheron (host) 9:55:36 AM
Wow, thank you so much for the high praise. I so appreciate you all sharing this space with me. Have a wonderful week, lovely people.
Bama Dan 9:56:41 AM
Bittersweet time coming up, indeed. :-( Thank you so much, Cheron. It really has been a stellar show. See y'all next Saturday...have a great week!
