Shervin Hajipour - Baraye
Shervin Hajipour Baraye
Baraye - Single * 2022
As Iran enters its third week of protests against the Islamic Republic, a de facto anthem has emerged. Titled “Baraye,” the song rings out at protests, blasts from cars in the streets of Tehran, and is sung by teenage girls in classrooms, their unveiled hair cascading down their backs. Written by the 25-year-old singer Shervin Hajipour, the song’s lyrics are composed of crowdsourced social media posts from Iranians about their incentives for protesting the government. “For my sister, your sister, our sister.” Each line begins with “Baraye,” which translates to “Because of…” or “For…” in Farsi: “For dancing in the alleys/For terror when kissing,” Hajipour sings atop a minimalist piano melody. “For my sister, your sister, our sister.” It has been sung at international demonstrations of solidarity, and there’s a grassroots campaign to nominate it for a Grammy in the new Best Song for Social Change category.

Alex Jeffries 3:11:17 PM
Good, grey Friday for some Bends-era Radiohead 🌧️
Julio Pena 3:13:27 PM
Agreed, Alex! Nice to hear "Street Spirit". Forgot how great a song it is.
Michelle Moyer 3:14:19 PM
Came here early for the Thom Yorke
Hannah (host) 3:14:50 PM
Hi everyone, happy Friday!
Alex Jeffries 3:16:15 PM
@Julio Agreed agreed! Probably my favorite album ender.
Alex Jeffries 3:35:15 PM
@Hannah That...is one heck of a contest. Just reading "pumped Jefferis full of drugs and booze" and "locked him in a shower with a stripper" was wild enough. And happy rainy Friday!
Eric W Vigil 3:39:21 PM
that's a pretty song (bird and arrows)
Hannah (host) 3:48:19 PM
@Alex, right? This would not happen today, methinks. @Eric glad you like it. They are excellent live.
Julio Pena 3:59:50 PM
Wow, I literally just purchased that Jamila Woods cut seconds before you played it.
Hannah (host) 4:00:47 PM
The Julio-Hannah musical mind-meld apparently has no...uh.. boundaries. 🤣
Julio Pena 4:01:00 PM
haha!
Eric W Vigil 4:21:36 PM
yeah ! Cramps live in ABQ NM 90's, one of the best shows I've ever seen to this day!
Julio Pena 4:29:49 PM
@Eric: Seeing Cramps live was also one of the best shows I've seen
Hannah (host) 4:30:43 PM
Jealous--never saw the Cramps. Wah-wah.
Julio Pena 4:31:59 PM
I'm sure you've seen countless acts many haven't, so even-stevens
Hannah (host) 4:32:41 PM
Ha, likely true.
Beverly Anderson 4:52:43 PM
Julio, I saw The Fall on 4th Avenue 1980s.
Julio Pena 4:55:39 PM
@Beverly !!!
John George 5:12:58 PM
Just got in & looked it up--mightily impressed by this WITCH! What's the story?
Beverly Anderson 5:13:31 PM
Julio, they were a funk band at that moment.
Beverly Anderson 5:17:27 PM
4th Ave was a hot bed back then. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Alleycsts, John Cale, X, Fleshtones, Rezillos, GoGos, etc.
Debora Eagle 5:29:25 PM
Boy sure wish I'd known about Jonathan Richman MOCA show a little earlier, my kind of jam...I gotta pay more attention! Happy or whatever Friday!
Hannah (host) 5:29:56 PM
Same Debora, it kinda came out of nowhere

Julio Pena 5:47:05 PM
@Beverly: You are the only person I've come across that has expressed knowledge of the Alleycats. They were from Lomita, CA, near where I grew up.
Beverly Anderson 5:51:05 PM
@Julio. It was a gnarly show. Singer/guitar challenged the whole bar to fight.
