Wipers - Window Shop for Love
Wipers Window Shop for Love
Is This Real? Zenorecords 1980

Debut LP from Greg Sage and company. Despite the band's sound, Greg Sage did not consider Wipers to be a punk rock band. From a 2020 Rolling Stone interview: “We were not considered punk because we didn’t try to be. I always liked wearing worn-out flannel; it was my Oregon fashion statement, I guess. I was a rebellious kid my whole life and would always do the exact opposite of what people said I must do to fit in.” This Pacific Northwest band was a major influence on Kurt Cobain.

10:06 PM
Black Flag - Black Coffee
Black Flag Black Coffee
Slip It In SST Records 1984

Fourth studio LP from the hardcore punk band, controversial for its album artwork and select song lyrics. In a May 2014 Razorcake interview, Black Flag bassist Kira Roessler criticized select lyrics from the album and artwork: "I didn't really recognize that they might have interesting ideas about women and that me being in the band was controversial. I didn't think that way until I saw the cover of Slip It In and I kind of realized, for one thing, they certainly didn't glorify women. That cover does not glorify women."

NoMeansNo Rags and Bones
Wrong Wrong 1989

In this programmer's humble opinion, NoMeansNo takes the mantle as Canada's best - though now defunct - punk band. This LP, the band's fourth, is their most commercially and critically successful release.

10:37 PM

Cows Everybody
Cunning Stunts Amphetamine Reptile 1992

Minneapolis noise-rock band. The cover to this - the band's fifth studio LP - is their direct take on Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch! cover, that being a great slice of avant-garde jazz.

Black Masses Rise Above Records 2010

Iggy & The Stooges I Need Somebody
Raw Power Columbia/Legacy 1973

Third studio LP from Iggy Pop and The Stooges, with newly brought-on James Williamson taking over guitar duties from Ron Asheton (relegated to bass). This LP was released on Columbia Records after the band was dropped by Elektra following 1970's Fun House. Supposedly, Columbia wanted a radio-accessible ballad from the band, with "I Need Somebody" fulfilling that request.
