BamaDan 3:24:26 PM
I think we heard "Levon" and not "Madman..."?
Hannah (host) 3:25:59 PM
We did, sorry. Fixed!
BamaDan 3:26:31 PM
😊
Alex Jeffries 3:34:13 PM
Hannah, you weren't kidding about the new S&TC album, it is in *heavy* rotation around here and a solid AOTY contender in my book.
Hannah (host) 3:35:08 PM
Yeah, she (and her band) knocked it out of the proverbial park.
BamaDan 3:39:48 PM
Geez...all these years I've known this tune as a Johnny Cash hit, never knowing it was a KK composition. I remember when it was getting airplay on my dad's country radio stations.
Alex Jeffries 3:40:54 PM
@BamaDan might have my new favorite Sunday morning song!
BamaDan 3:43:00 PM
One of the mostest hungoverest songs of all time, Alex! :-D
Hannah (host) 3:44:14 PM
I think Kris and Johnny might have been roommates around the time and I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was some inspirational overlap in terms of their shared lifestyle.
Alex Jeffries 3:44:24 PM
🤕😂
Christopher Schipper 4:25:16 PM
Hannah! Did you resurrect the old question: Is Joy Division Goth?
Hannah (host) 4:26:24 PM
Oh dear, I didn't think I was resurrecting anything! Always seemed legit under the umbrellas of both post-punk and goth.
Christopher Schipper 4:29:03 PM
LOL - just teasing. I always just thought of them as post-punk, but I know some Goths who claim them.
Hannah (host) 4:46:14 PM
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
BamaDan 4:59:43 PM
Honestly, I know that terms like Goth and Post Punk are used all the time these days, and they were even (apparently) used by a few music critics back in the late 70s and early 80s, but virtually no one that I knew back in the late 70s or early 80s ever used these terms. We simply called what was happening at the time "new wave". I could have been insulated, living first in the Bay Area and then in LA, but I just never heard these terms. Joy Division was simply considered a new wave band.
BamaDan 5:00:02 PM
Now is when I shout out "get off my lawn!" LOL
Hannah (host) 5:05:31 PM
Interesting point, Dan. I feel like newer music genre terms in the pre-internet age traveled much slower. But they also could be utterly retrospective; I think we'd have to a very deep dive to figure that one out. My only point of reference is from growing up in Seattle in the '90s and I can tell you that nobody (I mean NOBODY) called the music being made in our town "grunge."
BamaDan 5:06:28 PM
Point well taken, Hannah. This could be an interesting dive.
Debora Eagle 5:07:15 PM
Yeayah The Cure!
Hannah (host) 5:07:16 PM
I mean, can you declare something "post" whatever while it's actually happening? Almost seems like it would have to be retrospective.
BamaDan 5:07:50 PM
Totally agree. Julio and I have had some conversations like this.
BamaDan 5:11:03 PM
I mean...the ones that weren't coated with sarcasm and humor. :-)
Hannah (host) 5:13:28 PM
😆
Beverly Anderson 5:19:39 PM
Paul's Boutique greatest record ever. Tell me I'm wrong.
Hannah (host) 5:38:26 PM
@Beverly probably not goth OR post-punk but an excellent album nonetheless. Pretty perfect from top to bottom.
BamaDan 5:39:15 PM
Perfect and lovely example of "new wave", by Tones On Tail. :-)
BamaDan 5:40:05 PM
And a shadow of Sparks, too. Love it.
