PART TIME PUNKS radio show has been on the air every Thursday afternoon on KXLU 88.9FM in Los Angeles since 2006. The radio show focuses on the sounds (and history) of indie & DIY vinyl from 1977-present. So on any given Thursday you can expect to hear a mix of punk, post-punk, darkwave, coldwave, minimal synth, shoegaze, slowcore, grunge, ethereal, indierock, indiepop, dreampop, post-rock, industrial, experimental, krautrock & (occasionally) black metal.

Today. Part Time Punks follows up last week's birthday salute to psycheshoegazedelic innovators J. Spaceman and Sonic Boom (aka Jason Pierce and Pete Kember) -- by devoting an afternoon to their lesser-known but equally brilliant REMIX work. First, in the set of remixes that J.Spaceman carried out for other bands, then in a set of remixes Sonic Boom did for other bands, and wrapping the show with a mix of SPIRITUALIZED and SONIC BOOM/SPECTRUM remixes done by the birthday boys themselves. In short, an afternoon engineered for Spacemen ALL...

Today. Part Time Punks shifts its focus from vinyl to CDs for an afternoon. (A radical paradigm shift, I realize). So please tune in for a special tribute to the great UK label VOLUME, founded by Rob Deacon. Although largely unknown now (ie completely absent from any streaming formats) this remarkable short-lived label was for a brief while one of the most important and influential labels in the UK. Between 1991-1997 Volume released a series of 17 astounding compilation CDs, each packaged with a CD-sized book, and each containing unreleased tracks by some of the best indie artists of the 1990s, as well as exclusive interviews and photographs with the bands!
Only about a half dozen of the tracks featured on this afternoon's broadcast later resurfaced in other formats (typically b-sides) -- and even less than that popped up on Spinitron here as I was entering the track info -- which means unless you have these original CDs you have most likely never heard most of these tracks! So tune in and turn UP these glorious rarities (courtesy of Part Time Punks)!

Today. Part Time Punks radio show follows up on our previous tribute to John Peel two weeks back to pick up where we left off, keeping the focus on Peel Sessions by innovative post-punk bands with powerful women lead vocalists -- but this time focusing strictly on the bounty of bands that emerged in 1980. Today. Part Time Punks pays tribute to longtime KXLU listener Randy Walters who passed away last month. Randy got in contact with me this summer asking if I would like to buy his record collection -- pointing out how there were a ton of 4AD originals still in their shrinkwrap which he had only listened to once back when he bought these records and immediately transferred them to cassette. He said he'd been listening to the Part Time Punks show since it began -- and listening to KXLU 88.9FM since the 1970s -- and wanted his beloved records to go to a good and loving home. So today I want to pay tribute to Randy by spending the afternoon with you all listening to this magical stack of his records... These records will continue to be loved, Randy, and you will be greatly missed...

So far, in 2023, there are a handful of bands experimenting with combining shoegaze with dance and dub textures -- this of course just the latest case of musical history repeating itself (as of course this was first done in the early 1990s in fascinating fashion). So today, Part Time Punks radio show shines a light first on this handful of new bands, then digs deep into the roots of these sounds from the 90s, where layers and loops of noise and distortion were first overlaid with rhythms you could dance to (fast and slow) -- which of course is highly recommended today (unless you're on the freeway of course -- then just keep it LOUD)...
