While it's inevitable that sometimes even the best of us have a mentally off day, we have a tendency to let ourselves make it worse by feeling bad about feeling bad. In those situations, I try to remember a time on a camping trip with Boy Scouts that we hiked a dozen or so miles away from civilization. I was maybe 16, and had never meditated before, but I found this stream, this isolated creek, flowing quietly near where we were camped. It was early fall, and some leaves were just starting to drop from the trees. I sat and watched these leaves pass by me, and always reflected on that moment with serenity. Now, years on and facing a day where Alec's fighting Alec (and Alec is winning, the dick), I'm doing my best to think of invasive negative thoughts as each riding one of these leaves as it passes by. Nothing to get mad about, and only around for a second. Doesn't make sense to be mad about them, because hey, they're leaves and being angry at leaves is a groundskeeper's job. So yeah, if we take something from tonight, let's do our best to remember that kicking our own asses doesn't do much besides feeling like we've had our asses kicked.
